Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed., 1886. Barren County. ELDER JAMES R. DUVAL was born February 20, 1839, on the place where he now resides in Barren County, Ky. He is the son of Samuel S. Duval, a native of Virginia, who was born in 1815 and died September 17, 1882. His father was Robert Duval of Virginia, who died in Barren County, Ky. Samuel S. was twice married; first to Matilda B. Middleton, who died August 1, 1855, the mother of the following children: James R., Joseph E., William M., Daniel M., and Samuel S., Jr. His second wife was Mary Parker, and to them were born Ann E. (Davidson), and Dora M. (Emmerson). May 16, 1861, James R. Duval espoused in marriage to Permelia J., daughter of James and Eliza (Wright) Dillingham, of Warren County; she was born November 26, 1840, and bore her husband one child, Ella M. (Holman). In 1866 Mr. Duval commenced preaching in the Christian Church, and has exercised his gifts in that worthy calling to the present time, having in some instances had pastoral charge of congregations. His preference, however, is for independence in action, preaching as openings may occur, and without compensation, but laboring on the farm for the support of his family. He owns and successfully cultivates a farm of 140 acres of productive land - the former home of his grandfather - and on the place is a remarkable saltpeter cave. He was an uncompromising Union man during the war; he now affiliates with the Republican party.
