Backroads of Barren County, KY, the newspaper articles of William Daniel Tolle, Sandra K. Gorin, Gorin Genealogical Publishing, copyright July 1991. By permission of the compilist. The first settlers of Merry Oaks that we have any knowledge of were the DENTON brothers; Thomas, David and Charles. For many years they kept up a race track which was patronized by all the sportsmen of the country, far and near. They ran a store, and as that was in which would be termed by some the good old days of pure whiskey and peach brandy, a sufficient amount of that was generally on hand. A post office was kept there for many years. The route contained four offices. Started from Glasgow in the morning run to Merry Oaks, Smiths Grove, then turned north to Dripping Springs, which is on the Nashville pike six or seven miles below Glasgow Junctions (then Bell's Tavern), then on to Bells Tavern and on to Glasgow.
