Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed., 1886. Barren County. BENJAMIN K. DAVIS was born in Warren (now Henderson) County, Ill., July 3, 1838. His father, Anderson C. Davis, is of Welsh parentage, and was born January 11, 1812, in Goochland County, Va. He was twice married, first, on the 14th of May, 1835, to a Miss Catherine Curd, daughter of Jesse and Jane (Ellis) Curd, of Hanover County, Va. She died in 1848, aged thirty-seven years. Her children were five in number: William H., Benjamin K., Elizabeth J., Edwin A. and Catherine C. His second marriage occurred October 27, 1853, with Miss Louisa A., daughter of Nathaniel and Mary Cross, of Hanover County, Va. This union was blessed by the birth of two sons and one daughter, all of whom died in infancy. Anderson C. Davis has throughout life been actively engaged in agricultural pursuits; he is now in his seventy-third year, and superintends his farming interests with scarely abated zeal and success. He is one of a family of five brothers and nine sisters, all of whom lived to be grown. His elder brother, Hardin, now in his seventy-fifth year, exhibits remarkable vigor. He suffered heavy losses in the war of 1861. B. K. Davis is the only surviving member of his father's family. He was born on a farm; received a good common school education, which he supplemented with a course in Bethany College near Wheeling, VA., and after leaving college entered on the profession of teaching, which he abandoned as not suitable to his taste. He next purchased an interest in a saw and grist-mill near Brownsville, on Green River, and continued in that business for several years, under the firm name of Murrell, Nutting & Davis. In 1867 he turned his attention to agriculture and stock raising, in which he has been uniformly successful. He is the proprietor of a small but well kept and productive farm, which he has lately improved with new barns and dwelling. He was married June 2, 1864, to Miss Martha Jane Burks. They are the parents of nine children, all of whom are living: Edwin A., Harry L., William K., Lulu C., John G. H., Fannie C., Charles B., Bessie M. and Mattie M. Martha (Burks) Davis was born 1835. Her father, H. H. Burks, is of Irish extraction, a citizen of Barren County, and by occupation a farmer of uncommon success. Mr. and Mrs. B. K. Davis are life-long and consistent members of the Christian Church, in which Mr. Davis was for many years a ruling elder. Politically he is a Democrat.
