John R. Linder was born in March 1800 in North Carolina, and died on the 16th of  August 1863 in Fulton Co., Kentucky.  He married Livinia Nichols on 4 July 1823 in Stewart Co., Tennessee by Mathy Morgan, Baptist minister  She was born on the 11th of  February 1803 in South Carolina, and died on 20 November 1882 in Fulton Co., Kentucky. He and Lavinia were originally buried in the Linder Family Cemetery, north of Fulton on Highway 307; however, when the Purchase Parkway was built, their graves were moved to Greenlea Cemetery in Fulton, Kentucky.

John served in War of 1812 in Capt. John Price's Company, Tennessee Militia. He enlisted 13 Nov. 1814 and was discharged 13 May 1815. In his military record there is a letter dated 15 Nov. 1815 to Joseph Coleman, District Paymaster for the State of Tennessee; seeking pay for his service. An undated Company Pay Roll states that he should have received 8 dollars a month or a total of 48 dollars for his time in the militia. There is no evidence that he ever did receive this pay.
