Obituary of Sarah Ann Huestis - Date and paper unknown
Sarah Ann Huestis Ligon was born Sept. 14, 1812, in the town of Barton, Vermont, where she spent the early years
of her life.
At the age if sixteen she left her home (to which she never returned), to assist in a school controlled by her brother
A. J. Huestis, in Newark, New Jersey. She taught there one year, intending at its close to return to Vermont, but following
the fortunes of her brother, she accompanied him to Buckingham Co., Virginia, where he found a school, in which she taught
until her marriage to Henry A. Ligon in 1842.
Moved by a spirit of enterprise which characterized many Virginians of the day, they came to West Tennessee, a section
of the country at that time new and sparsely settled, and cast their lots with the people among whom they lived the remainder
of their lives.
After the lapse of fourteen years Henry A. Ligon died leaving his wife with six msall children to raise and a farm and slaves
to control. Even to a woman of her strength of character, this must have appeared a formidable undertaking., especially so,
as she had been reared in a city and had no idea of farm life and its management. But with a courage born of the
responsibilities  resting upon her, she took up the burden of life and successfully , though conscientiously trod the path of duty
and devotion until four sons and two daughters were reared to honorable manhood and womanhood.
She died April 3, 1900, at the age of 87 years, 6 months and 19 days. (It continues with several more paragraphs of praise and thanksgiving, but gives no more genealogical information).

Sarah is listed as an assistant governess and classical teacher at the Buckingham Female Collegiate Institute in Buckingham
Co., Virginia in the 1841-42 school year. Her brother's Aristides Joel and George Dana Huestis are also listed with the
Institute. Aristides as a promoter and George as a general worker. The brother's left Virginia for Iowa. Sarah was disowned
by the family because she had married a slave owner, something her parents disapproved of.
