Kentucky State Institute for the Education of Feeble-Minded Children
This institution would
be known by various names over its years of operation in
Frankfort;
Institute for the Education
of Feeble Minded Children, Feeble Minded Institute,
Kentucky
Training Home in 1945 and
Frankfort Hospital & School in 1963.
Established by the legislature
in 1860 as the Kentucky State Institute for the Education of
Feeble Minded Children.
It was located on a sixty-acre
tract of land on the southeast corner of Georgetown
and
Glenn's Creek roads.
Mentally retarded children ages six to sixteen from any part
of
the state were accepted
without fee for a period up to ten years.
During the late 1890's
the institution was struck by a series of fires; September 2,
1896,
May 3, 1897 and a third
fire on September 17, which destroyed several frame buildings.
Students were given temporary
housing on a local farm until reconstruction was
completed
that
year.
In 1958 the State Health
Department was moved from Louisville to Frankfort. August
of
that year ground was broken
for a new State Health Department building adjacent to
the
grounds of the old Kentucky
Training Home.
The facility was closed
in the late 1960's - early 1970's. All buildings, except part of the
main
administrative building,
were razed to make way for the state Human Resources
building.
The old administrative
building on Glen's Creek Road has been renovated and is used by
the state of Kentucky for
office space.
The old cemetery is located
on the corner of Glen's Creek and Cold Harbor Roads. It is
surrounded by an iron fence
and is maintained. Most burials are marked with a flat
maker
engraved UNKNOWN - Frankfort
Hospital & School. Today, burials for 172 individuals
have
confirmed on the institute
property.
If you have information about this facility or burials there we would like to hear from you.
