Henry E. Tutt

Henry E. Tutt was born on June 15, 1837 in Morgan County, Kentucky. He was the son of James B. Tutt, born about 1813 in Floyd County, Kentucky and his wife, Esther Haney Childers, born 1817 in Russell County, Virginia.

Henry served in the Union Army during the Civil War. He enlisted in Company E, 4th Kentucky Infantry Volunteers on August 6, 1861 for three years at Red River Iron Works in Estill County, Kentucky and was mustered in at Camp Dick Richardson by General George H. Thomas. In his military record, Henry was described as a 25 year old farmer, born in Morgan County, Kentucky, 5' 8" tall, dark complexion with black eyes.Shorty after enlistment, Pvt. Tutt fell ill when his unit was moving from Lebanon, Kentucky to Mill Springs and was left on the road. Apparently, he recovered and rejoined the group prior to an encounter with Confederate forces at Mill Springs, Kentucky. Following the victory, Union forces moved toward Somerset, Kentucky. From January 31, 1862 through February 23, 1862, Tutt was reported "absent". During this absence, Henry and another soldier from Company E, requisitioned a horse and mule from Confederate sympathizers then traveled to Lexington, Kentucky, where they sold the mule for $85. However, they kept the horse and later presented the Chaplain of the 8th Kentucky Regiment with a gift of a fine horse. The owner of the horse learned where the two soldiers had taken his animal and made a formal complaint. Both men confessed when confronted by their Captain and were placed in custody until their court martials convened. Tutt was sentenced to be confined at hard labor in charge of the guard for twenty days and to forfeit his monthly pay for two months. Following his return to duty he served his unit faithfully. Records show he was at a skirmish at Hoover's Gap, Tennessee on June 24, 1863, he served as a cook, and fought at Chickamauga, Georgia on September 19-20, 1863. In May through August 1864, Pvt. Tutt was reported sick and in the hospital at Lexington, Kentucky. After he was discharged from the hospital on July 18, 1864 he was assigned to the 10th Kentucky Infantry Regiment at Macon, Georgia. On October 25, 1865 after serving four years and two months during the Civil War, he was discharged.

On June 2, 1870 in Franklin County, Kentucky Henry married Ann Marie "Annie" Sacra, daughter of George Washington Sacra and Julia Ann Jenkins. During the years that followed, Henry's health began to fail. About 1888, he suffered a devasting stroke which resulted in a partial paralysis of his right side. On February 8, 1892, he filed an application of disability benefits for medical problems incurred during his service in the Civil War. Henry's address at that time was 2222 Griffith Avenue, Louisville, Kentucky. He was granted a pension of $8 per month on certificate #832630. On November 6, 1905 Henry Tutt submitted a Declaration for Increase of Pension. He stated he was 67 years of age and a resident of the City of Louisville, County of Jefferson, State of Kentucky and he is disabled by reason of Rheumatism, Varicose Veins, partial blindness and deafness, disease of the heart and nervous debility. Henry's health continued to decline. Living at the home of his son, Orion Tutt, he was nursed by Ella Childers for five weeks and then by Mamie Tutt the final week of his life, when he died on December 8, 1913. The official cause of death was given as Gangrene. Henry E. Tutt was buried in the National Cemetery at Cave Hill, Louisville, Kentucky, section E, roll 9. Anna Marie "Annie" Sacra Tutt died on July 24, 1901 and is buried in section 6 at Cave Hill Cemetery, Louisville, Kentucky.

in Louisville, Kentucky.

Mary Leslie Tutt, was born December 25, 1874. She
married William B. Gray about 1900 in Louisville,
Kentucky. Mary died on February 14, 1948 and is
buried at Cave Hill Cemetery, Louisville, Kentucky.

Lena Mae Tutt, was born March 14, 1879 at Mt. Sterling, Montgomery County, Kentucky
She married William S. Edwards. Lena died on July 16, 1951 in Louisville, Kentucky.
