Joseph C. & Harriett Julian Clarke
Joseph C. Clarke (1793-1875)
was a veteran of the War of 1812, and a Sheriff of Franklin County. He
is
buried in the Frankfort
Cemetery. His father, Matthew Newton Clarke (1754-1831), was a veteran of
the
American Revolution and
is buried in the Lower Benson Presbyterian Cemetery.
Harriett Julian Clarke
(1798-1838) was born in VA and died in Frankfort, KY. She was the daughter
of
Charles Julian, MD and
Jane Moore who are buried in the Lower Benson Presbyterian Cemetery
also.
The story behind these
miniature portraits on porcelain of Joseph and Harriett Julian Clarke is
that a
descendant took
images/photographs of them to France and had at least 2 known sets done.
There is
an artist's signature on
the lower right, partially hidden by the frame.
Harriett Julian was
born September 30, 1798 in Spotsylvania County, Virginia and died September
21, 1838 in Franklin County, Kentucky. The following 1838 obituary was found in the Joseph C. and Harriett L. Julian Clarke Bible records:
Died, in this county, on
Friday last, at 2 o'clock A.M., of acute inflammation _____, in the 40th
year of her age,

Joseph C. Clarke was
born July 28, 1793 in Frederick County, Virginia and died November 10, 1875
in Franklin County, Kentucky. He was the son of Matthew Clarke and Ellen Stubblefield Brown Clarke.
Matthew Clarke joined the
Militia in York County, Pennsylvania, serving from 1780-1783 in the 4th-8th
classes of
