MAILING LIST INFORMATION

It is the intent of this mailing list, and the owner, to provide a safe and caring  atmosphere for myself and other East Kentucky genealogy researchers. The list was created in November, 1999 with fewer than 100 members. Now, in less than one year, our membership has grown to 500+, and it's growth continues daily.

My rules have always been few and simple...NO FLAMING and NO OBSCENITIES. Violation of these will be cause for immediate and permanent removal from the list. For those who aren't sure what FLAMING is... it's  anything that is rude or argumentative. I reserve the right to judge this, and my judgment will be final.

I do ask that all members be considerate of others in posting a message/query to the list. Please always use a proper SUBJECT line, use all caps with surnames, give all pertinent information, always say thank you, and (please, please) be honest about who you are. Honesty is truly a must in any type of factual research. It has been my experience, over the past year, that those who use fictitious identities shadow all else that they present. In other words, if I can't trust that you are who you say you are, then why should I believe anything else you say?

I encourage you to post your surnames often, because we have new members, daily.  I also encourage you to continue bringing stories of East Kentucky History and Folklore to the list. Although I have always allowed other things to be posted, such  as: prayer request, recipes, and clean jokes, I ask that you limit these as a consideration to others.

Although I maintain the title of "owner to the list (for copyright and business purposes), I truly consider myself as manager and fellow researcher. This is  your  list, and I welcome and encourage your input. If you have any suggestions or complaints concerning the list please forward them to [email protected] . All things will be taken into consideration, and decisions will be made for the good of the "whole" list. You will receive an email from me containing a full explanation of my decision. Please be an active member of this list, and always honor your ancestors.

Hoaxes, Urban legends, Virus Warnings, etc.

Email hoaxes have become so prevalent that they're regarded in some quarters as a threat to network integrity comparable to that of actual computer viruses. In these days of ever-increasing Spam people are getting fed up with the amount of garbage clogging their inboxes. Net hoaxes account for a growing percentage of this glut. One reason for  the increase is the constant influx of new and inexperienced users unfamiliar with Netiquette and unaware of how rampant misinformation is on the Internet. Old hoaxes and chain letters are revived and recirculated right alongside newly-invented ones. To many, it seems, clicking the "Forward" button on their email client and sending it to everyone in their address book, including every mailing list they are members of, is a automatic reflex. I would rather not have all this "Spam" clogging up the mailing list,   so please do not post them to the list at all .

A lot of  those "virus" warnings are also false.  Check them out first from a reliable  source before forwarding, or delete them.

I have provided a list of the best anti-hoax resources available. Most of these sites   simply provide information, but it's authoritative and very useful information. One offers cut-and-paste templates to send out in answer to particular hoax messages. Bookmark  your favorites and share them with those "in need"

(you know the ones I mean).
