Two volumes of a detailed 1897 survey of the Ohio River. Unfortunately, the maps only follow the Ohio as far as Ironton, Ohio, but I still think they are a wonderful Holiday gift for those interested in old maps and the early history of our region. These maps are not quite as detailed as the 1803 map we already have, but they are far more comprehensive. Zoom in once the PDF is open, to get a detailed look. These are very large PDF's (Map #2 loads especially slowly), but well worth the trouble, IMHO.
These maps were provided by Jim Kettel, Genealogy Supervisor for the Boyd County Library. Thanks a million Jim!!!

Several more Fleming County deed images, as well as a couple more PVA maps. 28 Oct. 2017 Fleming Co. Deeds
I believe I have found a deed for a property that appears on an early map of Grayson. The map appears to date from around 1837 (Grayson was then located in Greenup Co.). The map is in Greenup Co. Deed Book F Page 418, but is not obviously associated with a particular deed. The map contains many property owner names, but no deed references.
The property's deed is contained in Greenup Deed Book C Page 65. The parcel is located on Stinson Creek and contains 100 acres. Its location, size and orientation exactly corresponds to the property on the Grayson Map. I have not yet found a Carter Co. deed for this property.

Greenup Co. Deed Books D, E & F, 1820-1838 - complete. Unexpected perhaps, but I believe it will be helpful to have these on line. 25 Sept. 2017 Greenup Co. Deeds
As an aid in identifying Carter County properties/deeds in pre-1838 Greenup County, I'm matching the 1830 Greenup County census against the 1840 Carter County census. Where I see the 1840 Carter County names grouped together on the Greenup census, I can assume that they are living in a part of Greenup County that became a part of Carter County in 1838. I'm marking their names on the 1830 census with a "star". This is a work in progress. ;>) 18 Sept. 2017 Greenup Co. Census
Glen Haney brought to my attention the old bridge that passed over the Little Sandy at the foot of Town Hill. I parked next to it many times without knowing it was there, hidden by the brush and trees. Originally, Route 60 entered Grayson from the east about three quarters of a mile north of its current path. Until the 1960's, a local road that roughly followed the route of the current Route 60 passed over this bridge. This bridge was abandoned when Route 60 was re-routed along the flank of the hill to the east. So cool! Thanks Glen. 17 Sept. 2017 Photo Gallery
I've added a Google Maps aerial photo to the page containing the 1811 survey map of the Grayson area. Of course, Grayson was still in Greenup County when this map was drawn. I haven't linked the 1811 parcels to the aerial photos yet, but I'll update the page with my comments in the next day or two.14 Sept. 2017 Greenup Co. Deeds
My current project is an attempt identify early Greenup County deeds for properties that became a part of northern Carter County when Carter County was created in 1838. This is turning out more difficlt than I expected. The early deeds are in very poor condition, one entire deed book is missing (no doubt a victim of containing many original Boone deeds). Deed Book D Page 146 is as a disturbing a document as you are likely to find in any deed book. 10 Sept. 2017 Greenup Co. Deeds

I moved everal deed images for properties that were in Greenup Co. when they were surveyed, but were later recorded in Carter Co. after its formation. I'll have to verify that deeds A-35, A-44 & A-298 are the Carter County deed book numbers, rather than the Greenup County numbers. These are properties that belonged to George James, so they are no doubt of interest to several researchers.4 Sept. 2017 Carter Co. Deeds

A number of Carter County PVA parcel maps have been added (labeled "(new)"). These images are not perfect, but I'm getting a little better at photographing them. As with so many things in life, just when you get half-way competent at something, you stop doing it ;>) Anyway, I've found these maps to be an indispensible resource when linking old property deed descriptions to current day property deeds. I'll try to get the remaining half dozen done this week. I started this particular project five and a half years ago. Whew! 15 May 2017 PVA Maps

I've added a brief description of the Public Lands Survey System (PLSS) which is used throughout the western US. If you need to work with deeds in those states, a familiarity with the PLSS Parcel Identification Numbering format is very helpful. I couldn't find an explanation that was both comprehensive and non-technical, so I wrote one of my own and placed it on the Nettle Creek Township, Randolph County, Indiana deed page that I worked on several years ago. I would appreciate the feedback of researchers who have a clearer understanding of the PLSS than I do ;) 3 April 2017 Deeds

A day to celebrate a small personal success! I finally located my Ross family's old homeplace on Cabin Creek in Lewis, County. John and Nancy Ross lived there for about 4 years in the mid 1860's. Somewhat curiously, John and Nancy resided in Carter County both before and after their time in Lewis County. I visited the site of their home today for the first time. For those who may be interested, I briefly summarized the research process. 29 March 2017 Ross Lewis Co. Homeplace
On-going updating of the Lewis County deeds, indexes & maps for the area around Cabin Creek. All of our ancestors probably moved around between censuses, just like we do ourselves. I just discovered some previously unknown "old homeplace" deeds from the 1860's. As I did for their homes in Carter County, I'm attempting to trace the 1860's property boundaries to current day properties. It's something like searching through a very large corn maze ;). 24 March 2017 Lewis Co. Deeds - link fixed

I just found an interesting site in the "wayback machine" archives that gives an example of creating a "cladogram". The website hosting company was unable to help me restore the now defunct Denton surname website, soooo, I used the "Wayback Machine" to recover an archived copy of the website and I have (at least temporarily) made it available here on KYCarter.com. This is a first for me, so I don't know how this will work-out in the long run. I've added some more Fleming County deed images and PVA maps. I recognize that these have minimal value to most of you who are not researching Fleming County families, but several of the family names that I've come across are also common in Carter County, so it might be worth a minute to do a search through these deeds for surnames of interest to you. You never know ;)19 Nov. 2016 Fleming Co. Deeds
An essay on the history of the town of Hillsboro in Fleming County. Really well done, and mentions several individuals whose families have Carter County connecions. Also, a biography of William T. Denton. Don't forget to vote ;) 8 Nov. 2016 Journals
I added some 1852 and 1855 Fleming County birth records. Several of the people listed have Carter County connections that I'm researching. Such records do remind us of the sometimes troubling history of our region.7 Nov. 2016 Births
I spent today in Fleming County researching my Denton family line. I met with many friendly and helpful people, and took some photos of Hillsboro and Grange City (where the Denton's once owned property), as well as Eden's Chapel Cemetery. The condition of the older markers is quite poor, but I have obtained a listing of many of the burials in this cemetery. 28 October 2016 Cemeteries
I've may a small change to the previously posted aerial photo of Grayson to indicate the original routing of Route 60 north of Town Hill as the highway entered Grayson from the east. I also note the location of Landsdowne St., the original location of Route 60 as it entered/left Grayson from the west. I won't be able to make it to the meeting of the Rattlesnake Ridge Genealogy Club on Saturday, but I know you all will have a great time. I hope to see you at the Spring 2017 meeting. 28 October 2016 Maps
The past couple of weeks I've been adding new deeds, plats and indexes to the Bath and Fleming County deed pages. You will find that some deeds were used to dispose of a deceased person's worldly posessions, which sometimes included assorted pots, tools, bedsteads and farm animals (and in the case of one of my relatives, he passed onto his heir a horse named "Bucks-a-bit";). I find the deeds give me an idea what my kin was up to in-between censuses, births, deaths and marriages. I enjoy finding the land they lived on, what business ventures they tried and who their neighbors/friends were. It's all there. All you have to do is look for it. 27 Oct. 2016 Deeds
In working with old maps of the Carter County region, I noticed that several of them indicated a significant trail between the Olive Hill area and Flemingsburg, Kentucky. Today there is no direct road between the two cities, and I was wondering if any of the old trail exists as current-day roads. As it turns out, we must piece together several local roads to approximate the route of this old trail. I took some photos yesterday to give a sense of the countryside that the trail passed through. I suspect that this may have originally been part of a Native American trail connecting the upper Tygert to the Ohio River in the Maysville area. 27 Oct. 2016 Trails
For those of you with time on your hands this winter, I offer my Wyoming Precinct deed dependancy chart that I'm working on as an example of a deed analysis device. It's a graphic representation of how property changed hands during the 19th and early 20th century. I've spent some time in the Bath County Deed Room photographing old deeds as the basis for the chart. The time just seems to fly by ;>) 15 Oct. 2016 Bath Co. Deeds

Thanks to Mary Martha Littleton I corrected an error I had made in the routing of US 60 through Grayson. US 60 actually went up Landsdowne St., not up Railroad St. I well remember the pre-interstate highway era, when finding one's way through the middle of the towns that the US highway system passed through was a real adventure. Highway map reading stressed many an American marriage to their limit ;>) 6 October 2016 Maps
I've added aerial photos to highlite changes that were made to the roads of Carter County between 1940 and 2016. I've zoomed in on a couple of areas that were affected by the construction of I-64, and show the contrast using currect satellite photos. Some of the routings are a little ambiguous, but if you are familiar with the way these areas appear on the ground to day, the contrast is kind of interesting. I've added Soldier-Enterprise and Hitchins-Denton satellite images to the page. 6 October 2016 Maps

I'm adding the locations of buildings on the 1934 Carter City map to a modern aerial photo of the same area. I'll have to do some more on-the-ground investigations to finish it accurately. I believe some of the buildings I photographed in 2009 are, sadly, now gone. I would appreciate all input/corrections. 28 September 2016 Maps
You may not have noticed the link on the 1884 Bath County map page to another page where I superimpose the 1884 residence locations onto a modern day aerial photo of old Wyoming Precinct. I am in the process of adding deed plats to the page for properties that correspond to the 1884 residence locations (not as easily done as one might think). My main interest is in the William Denton property (at the foot of a thin neck of land that has the Licking River on three sides). My DNA test indicates that old Bill was my 3rd great grandfather (somehow). Last week I kayaked the Licking River from the site of the community of Wyoming (now an empty field) downstream about a mile. I quite coincidentally ended my trip ajacent to Bill's old farm (life can be strange). Anyhow, I drove out to the property yesterday. There's a house right where the 1884 map indicates the William Denton residence stood. The house doesn't look 132 years old, and no one came to the door when I knocked. It'll be a few weeks before I'll be able to return for further investigations. I can't wait ;) 20 September 2016 Maps

Oops. I just discovered that when I posted the updated 1755 Chegeree map with captions, it was upside down! You all have been too kind to point it out. So, it's now fixed. Again, many of the notations appear to be phonetic "transliterations" of names assigned by Native Americans (some of which were probably never referenced by any other written record), so I just did my best guess-timate what was written by the map maker. Also, at least 25 sites on the main map are numbered, but only 12 of them are explained in the map key. Apparently completion of the map was aborted for some reason we'll never know. 1 Sept. 2016 Maps
I've added a link to the L2a1 haplogroup project to the DNA research page. A friend of mine, who was born in Ethiopia, is a member of this group. It is one of a very select number of ancient ancestral DNA lines from which all human beings are descended. To the best of her knowledge, she has no non-Ethiopian ancestors. 28 August 2016 DNA Genealogy
All of the old 1884 Fleming and Bath County map images have been replaced with much higher quality images. Many households are identified on these maps, and besides their intrinsic historical value, a number of the families referenced are linked to Carter County families. DNA testing just allowed me to break through my last personal "brick wall". My family history is more complicated than I ever imagined. I had previously learned that my paternal great grandfather was actually a Winegarner. Today I've discovered through a DNA test of my uncle, that my maternal 2nd great grandfather was a Denton, not a Ross (or possibly Vanlandingham), as my family has aways believed! Today's test results show me having close genetic relationships with at least 4 living Denton researchers, and no conection to any Ross lines at all. So, I've added links to a couple of Denton surname projects to the Carter County DNA Research main page. What a turn of events!! 16 June 2016 DNA Genealogy

I've completed my first effort at transcribing the captions and notes of the 1755 Chegeree map. The numerous references to Indian tribes who were allied with the French, their strength and deployment, strongly suggests that the map was created for its military intelligence and maneuvering value, rather as a general travel guide. Something every genealogy researcher needs to consider. Studies indicate that up to 10% of all births are not fathered by a male in the household. Others indicate the rate of misattributed paternity is 3% to 5%. Assuming these rates were equally true in previous generations, then there is an up to 20% chance that you don't actually know who your grandfather was, and possibly as low as a 50-50 probability that you know who your biological 3rd great grandfather actually was. These estimates would include informal adoptions. Unless DNA testing is a part of your research process, you may someday discover that you have invested a lot of time and effort researching people that you aren't even related to. Just say'n ;>) 5 April 2016 DNA Genealogy

A new section dedicated to DNA Genealogy. There are links to DNA research projects for select Carter County family lines, and the beginnings of a tutorial on DNA genealogy. I'm convinced this is the future of genealogy, and we should all try to have a basic understanding of how it works. You don't have to get deep into the weeds of the science, but if you can learn the basics, I can just about guarantee you'll find some new research directions and more than a few surprises along the way. I'll be adding much more to this section in the near future. 25 March 2016DNA Genealogy

An album of 279 images from two Executors/Administrators Bond certificate books that are in the Courthouse Deed Room. I decided to do these even though they aren't indexed and finding references to your kin requires perserverance. In a way they're kind of cool because they are pretty old (1861-1882) and it's hard to find stuff from that era. It looks like a fair percentage of the local people who died during those years had an estate executor who was required to complete one of these certificates. Some family members attached hand written notes on scraps of paper relating to the matter. It's really quite touching in a way. 28 Jan.2016 Death Documents

I just finished the Kindle book "1491 - New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus" by Charles C. Mann.. A very interesting read. The author documents that before the Native American holocaust, bison did not exist in great numbers; two thirds of arable land of North America was actively managed by Native Americans for agricultural purposes; the eastern forests were not densely grown because Native Americans used fire to extensively clear land as an aid in hunting wild game and to create garden plots; the Amazon basin was widely developed by native peoples for gardens, tens of thousands of home sites and extensive orchards. When the first Spanish explorers floated down the Amazon, the river's banks were lined by scores of large communities of native peoples. Within a few short years, smallpox and other introduced diseases had wiped them all out, and the memory of their existence was lost for 500 years. Some of the largest cities on earth were located in Mesoamerica. There is a wide consensus that 80-100 million people inhabited the Americas in 1491. Soon after contact, their numbers had been reduced by 90 percent. This as a very scholarly book, 25% of it is devoted to academic footnotes and a large index of books and scientific papers that the author used as the basis for his book. Seemingly, every proper noun, statistic and adjective is footnoted. Highly recommended to anyone with an interest in early American history. 6 Oct. 2015Whats New

The R. A. Carpenter documents page has been updated. All images are now on line. Additional comments to follow. 1 August 2015 Journals
I'm starting to bring the R. A. Carpenter documents on line (about 2%). Initially, most of the material will be raw images and not searchable. As I have time, I'll list some of the names that are referenced, but I'll never be able to transcribe more than a small percent of the names. There are many, many public docments (more on that later) and the only way you will know if individuals that are important to you are referenced is to scan through the images. You won't find this material anywhere else. Each of us will have to decide how much time and effort we are willing to invest in the exercise. There will be many court documents, deed drafts, membership rolls, receipts and other stuff that passed through Mr. Carpenter's hands (and somehow stuck). Odds are someone you are interested in is mentioned in there somewhere. 31 July 2015 Journals
I'm working on a collection of note books, letters and legal documents that belonged to R. A. Carpenter. He was the Carter County Sheriff, a well known attorney and (I believe) a State Representative. The documents cover the 1881-1910 period. There are hundreds of local people mentioned in the documents, but it won't be practical for me to make them all searchable. I hope to have them on line by Monday. 29 July 2015 What's New

Remember, it's important to make backup copies of your digital records. You might consider making several archive copies onto CD's, DVD's or USB memory sticks. Be sure to store you backups as far removed from your computer as is practical. Mail a backup to a friend or relative. Also, be sure to identify the people in all your old photographs. It's best to write names and dates on an adhesive label that is placed on the back of the photo. You should avoid using a ball point pen directly on the back of any photo. Never throw away old photos. Lastly, please don't identify people as "Me and Bob", "Grandma" or "Uncle Skeeter". In 50 years, no one will have a clue who you're referring to. 4 July 2015 What's New

I've decided to suspend the posting of current obituaries to this website. Nearly all of the current obits I have been posting for the past several years have been obtained from other websites, and there seems to be no good reason for me to re-post them here. I have added several useful links to the "Obituaries Page" which I believe will actually provide better service to Carter County researchers. It has never been practical for me to keep this site updated with all Carter County obits and death notices. This new policy shifts some of the burden of locating new obits onto you, the individual researcher, but with regular visits to the links I will provide, I do believe you will have access to even more obits than I could ever post to this website. I will continue to post old obits from all sources. I would also like to extend my sincere thanks to the wonderful contributors who have so kindly submitted obits to our site over the nearly 12 years I have been the site coordinator. I intend to continue adding new research material to our site for as long as possible. John W. Grace 6 Dec. 2014 Obituaries

The full text of "The Archeology of Kentucky" is now available on the Kentucky1491.com website. Carter County is listed as having over 200 sites. Sadly, it appears that most professional archeolgical research in our region is only done immediately prior to the sites being destroyed by construction (AA Highway, Grayson Lake, etc.) Slight consolation as it is, that is still more research than is required prior to the initiation of new limestone quarry mining (none). 22 October 2014 History

Research suggestion. Every Carter County researcher should order a Carter County telephone directory from Windsteam Communications. It's the easiest way to contact people with the surnames you are researching. I have found local residents unfailingly open and friendly, once they know your purpose in calling. You may find new relationships and family stories that you wouldn't have discovered any other way. Remember, not everyone is on Facebook ;>) 10 July 2014 What's New

Morgan's Station Trail travel guide. These pages allow the travelor to re-trace the trails used by the Native American raiding party that attacked Morgan's Station on April 1, 1793. The came from central Ohio and returned there with their hostages following the raid. This was the last major attack against white settlers on the frontier to take place in what is now Kentucky. Tecumseh is believed to have been among the raiders. This guide is a first draft and as it stands is of primarily of interest to those who have already read Harry G. Enoch's book "In Search of Moragn's Station". I will be adding material to these pages on a regular basis in the weeks ahead.5 July 2013 Trail

Scientific article discussing the types of clay found in the Olive Hill area. Pretty esoteric stuff, but readable if you have an interest in the topic. Affidavit of Descent for Martin Snider. Martin was one of the earliest large land owners in Carter County. He passed away in Ohio, but while a resident of Kentucky bought and sold thousands of acres of land in and around Carter County. Oddly the Affidavit implies that his heirs didn't actually know the date of his death. Must be a story in there somewhere. 31 March 2014 Affidavits of Descent

I just finished reading "The Long Hunt", the story of the death of the buffalo east of the Mississippi. This topic has always fascinated me so I thought I'd try this book. It starts a little slow, but the author eventually gets into people and geography that are in our area. It contains no direct references to Carter County, but it does refer to the Licking River and briefly, northeast Kentucky. Still, it does document the surprisingly recent rise of the American bison east of the Mississippi and their eventual extermination from our part of North America. We came surprising close to wiping out all bison throughout the western hemisphere. 27 Feb. 2014Books

Link to a very technical, yet interesting geological analysis of the Carter Caves area. It is noted that the entrance road to the park runs through a valley that was once a large cave whose roof completely collapsed. A number of deed images have been added. Use your browser "Find" to search for names of interest. Deed Book 191, Page 632 is notable. It's for properties with a value in excess of $27 million and encompassing a considerable part of northeast Kentucky. Kind of makes you wonder what's happening there. Deed Book 13 Page 430 reserves oil and gas rights to 10,100 acres of northern Carter County. Wonder if my neighbors know their farms can be fracted and they won't be able to do anything to stop it. 5 February 2014 Deeds
Probably the earliest deed for the Carter County area: August 2, 1794. The deed (aka "indenture") is difficult to read, but the accompaning tract map clearly shows the Little Sandy River, Tygarts Creek and several branches. Several deeds in the Carter County Courthouse refer back to "Graham's Survey", notably my own farm's in the Lick Branch area of northern Carter County. There may have been other "Graham Survey's" which have not survived. Also, I'm not sure how these tracts relate to the later "William Grayson Lands" which appear to be the earliest lands actually inhabited by European migrants to Carter County. 3 February 2014 Deeds
