MRS. VENA HORTON DIED SUNDAY
Grayson, KY- March 14:
     Mrs. Vena Amanda Horton, 74, died in Charleston General Hospital Sunday, March 13, after an extended illness.
     Mrs. Horton was a native of Grayson, Carte County and had been a resident of Charleston, W.Va. for the past 
     three years, residing with her eldest son T. V. Horton. 
     Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday (CST) at the Bagby Memorial Methodist Church at Grayson
     by the Rev. J. H. Finch. Burial will be in Grayson Memorial Cemetery.
     Surviving are the husband, J.P. Horton, three sons; T. V. Horton, Charleston, W.Va., J. N. Horton , Dayton OH, Clyde
     R. Horton, Louisville, KY (this is my dad-Ann); one sister Mrs. Elizabeth Earnhart, Texas; four brothers, Thomas Rice
     of Rosedale, KY, William L. Rice of Haverhill, Ohio, Walter A. Rice of Grayson, Frank Rice of Newport News, Va; seven
     grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
    The body will be brought tonight from Charleston to the Malone Funeral Home where friends may call.

Mrs. Vena Amanda Horton was the daughter of James Holman Rice and Julia Ann Green. She was born Nov 22, 1880 in Carter Co., KY.
She married James Knox Polk Horton on Jan 1, 1902 at Rosedale, Carter Co., KY.
She had three children:

1. Thomas Virgil Horton born March 9, 1903 Ashland, Boyd Co., KY died Oct 11, 1982 Leesburg, Lake Co., FL married 
    Josephine Louise Dixon born March 18, 1903 Ashland, Boyd Co.,KY died Dec 30, 1992 Leesburg, Lake Co., FL

2. James Nelson Horton born May 13, 1905 Wisconsin (James Knox Polk Horton and many other Elliott and Carter Countians
    went to Wisconsin for the timbering -in fact Langlade Co., Wisconsin had so many Kentuckians it was called "Little Kentucky" )
    died Nov 21, 1959 Dayton, Montgomery Co., Ohio married first Hazel Marie Fraley born June 11, 1906 Ashland, Boyd Co., Ky
    died Jan 25, 1996 Fairborn, Greene Co., OH , they divorced and he married 2nd a Geneal _____  and possibly married a third 
    time.

3. Clyde Rice Horton born April 11, 1925 in Ashland, Boyd Co., KY. This is my dad, he always said he was a "whoops baby" in
    that he was a surprise after 20 years of no other children .He was in WW II as a Marine and then with the GI Bill he went
    Louisville where he went to the University of Louisville and worked fulltime at Brown Foreman Distillery making whiskey barrels.
    He met Marie Antoinette "Peggy" McGalin there, married and had me, Ann Kendall Horton and my brother James Travis Horton.
    He said he and most of the guys from his graduating class at Prichard signed up instead of waiting to be drafted. Dad said he
    didn't want to see the hind end of a mule for the rest of his life. After he got his degree from U of L he went to work for American
    Airlines in Louisville and retired from there after my mom died. He lives in Crestwood, Ky now and makes it to Grayson Memory
    Days every so often.  He was very proud of being on the Carter County basketball team that whipped the Ashland Tom Cats for 
    first time ever. Dad is still alive at this time, July 6, 2010
