Kentucky GenWeb projectThe Carter County Herald, February 23, 1939 Prominent Citizen Is Found Dead Shumate Logan, age 77 years, was found dead on his porch at his home last Tuesday evening on Reeves Branch, a tributary of Tygart Creek, about eight miles west of this city. Coroner Clarence W. Henderson was called and pronounced his death due to cerebral hemorrhage, due to high blood pressure, from which he had been a suffering for several years, it was said. He complained to his son, a few moments before his death, of the leader in his neck was giving him a lot of pain and showed his son how it had swollen, and his son going on about his work, was soon notified that he had been found dead. He was a member of a pioneer family of this and Lewis as well as Rowan counties, and leaves but two sisters of this family, Mrs. Mary Clark of Upper Tygart and Mrs. Tennessee Rivers of Soldier; three brothers, Ledford, Perry and Jack Logan. Three children, Mrs. Allie Raybourn at home; Milford Logan, at home and Claude Logan of English, W. Va.; 15 grandchildren besides a host of relatives and numerous friends who will miss his every day kind acts and helpfulness in the community. For years he had lived a devout Christian life and was prepared to go. His wife and two daughters had preceded him in death. The funeral services were conducted Thursday afternoon with burial in the Logan cemetery near the home. [Editor’s Note: This is Robert Riley Logan]
