THE HERALD Grayson, Ky., Friday, Feb. 21, 1902 AT REST James Burchett, an old citizen of Carter county, departed this life on the 12th day of February 1902. He was born on March 27th, 1817 in the county of Lawrence, was married to Ellen Haney on the 15th of February, 1840, with whom he lived happy and contentive until the 18th of November 1901, when she fell asleep, only to preceed him to the grave three months. In the year 1842 they confessed the Savior and were baptized in the Cats Fork of Blaine by Elder Aaron Saunders, through a long life honored the profession they made. About the year 1850 he moved to Tygart Creek in Carter county where he lived until his death. Attached himself to the Church of Christ at the Beech school house, was made deacon of that congregation which he filled many years acceptably. Then he was set apart as an elder of the congergation which he held at his death. He was at all times a jealous warm hearted Christian never losing his faith in his Redeemer or his confidence and trust in God. He and his devoted wife were “lovely and sweet in their lives and in death they were not divided,” kind to a fault, forgiving in spirit, prepared at all times to weep with those who weep and rejoice with those who rejoice. Truly his works do follow him. J. R. Botts According to the Old Cemetery Index on the Carter County page both James and Ellen are buried in the Plummer Cemetery, aka Plummer-Burchett Cemetery. Note that the newspaper obit gives his date of birth as the 27th and the stone as the 28th.
