Joel Preston "Jody" Barker - 1938-2006

Joel Preston Barker, age 68, of Melrose, Fla., formerly of Olive Hill, Ky., passed away Sunday, June 18, 2006, at his residence.

Mr. Barker was born Feb. 11, 1938, in Carter County, Ky., a son of the late Millard and Nora Mauk Barker. He was a retired welder after working many years out of Pipeliners Local 798. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 89 in Melrose and a U.S. Army veteran who served in the 101st Airborne Division in Honolulu, Hawaii.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Clara Binion and Thurma Carter; and two brothers, Delmane Barker and Garland Barker.

He is survived by his wife, Hedy Barker of Melrose; three sons, Michael (Eldonna) Barker of Hurley, Wis., Preston (Kara) Barker of Melrose and Jody (Kathy) Barker of Orlando, Fla.; a daughter, Cheryl (Brian) Newell of Dunnellon, Fla.; a brother, Clowell Barker of Olive Hill; five sisters, Beulah Stevens, Velda Dunaway, Cloma Ruley and Lou Vada Bond, all of Olive Hill, and Marquitta Shaffer of Grayson, Ky.; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 24, 2006, at Oney-Henderson Funeral Home in Olive Hill by Brother Larry Joe Ruley. Burial will be in Garvin Ridge Cemetery.
