Howard Milton Jessee 1931-2008 MOREHEAD � Howard Milton Jessee, age 77, of Bruce Road, Soldier, Kentucky, passed away Thursday, December 25, 2008, at his residence. He was born July 13, 1931, in Carter County, Kentucky, to the late Charles Haden and Gladys Dorothy Bradley Jessee. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Lee Jessee, on August 17, 2002, and one brother, Harold Jessee. She was born November 4, 1940 in Carter County, a daughter of the late Edward and Mary Evelyn Scott Erwin. Shelby Jean was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend to all who knew her. She was a homemaker and former owner of �The Little Hobo� Restaurant in Olive Hill. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey Scott Erwin and brother, George Erwin. She is survived by her husband, Herman Spencer; two sons, Arthur �Art� Lawhorn Jr. of Richmond, Virginia and Dwayne Locker of Raleigh, North Carolina; one brother, James �Bud� Erwin of Olive Hill, Kentucky; two sisters, Janet Gail Baker of Olive Hill, Kentucky and Ramona Roberts of Albany, Kentucky; three granddaughters, Jessica Lynn Lawhorn, Jennifer Renee Lawhorn and Alisha Marie Lawhorn; and her very special pet dog J.D. William Earl Hurley - 1922-2008 William Earl Hurley, 86, of Ashland, Ky., died Oct. 29, 2008, in Woodland Oaks Health Care Facility following an extended illness. Mr. Hurley was born April 13, 1922, in Carter County, Ky., the son of the late David Henry and Minnie Alice Crosthwaite Hurley. He was also preceded in death by brothers Millard Hurley and Dorsie Lee Hurley and sisters Nannie Alice Layne, Sadie Pearl Layne, Beulah Marie Parsons and Bertha Evelyn Lawhorn. He was a retired TV repairman and formerly worked at Zwicks Music. He was a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and served with the Army Combat Engineers. His survivors include his wife, Noreita Miller Hurley of Ashland; a son, William Edward Hurley and wife Donna of Peyton, Colo.; stepsons William Edward Mauk and wife Marsha and Thomas Ora McKnight and wife Hope, all of Ashland; daughters Susan Lynn Chinn and husband John and Nancy Louise Brown and husband George, all of Ashland; stepdaughters Renita Luanne Colm and husband Hobby, Elaine Sparks and Karen Denise Beam, all of Ashland; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Blanche Stamper Marion 1923-2008 VIRGINIA BEACH, VA - Blanche Stamper Marion, 86, died peacefully in her home in the care of her loving husband on December 1. Born on May 22, 1923 to Shade and Eunice Stamper, she grew up surrounded by brothers, sisters, and cousins in Grayson. She attended Morehead State, leaving there to work with the Army Ground Forces during the World War II. Her posting to Washington, D.C. allowed her to meet and marry George L. Marion, U.S.N. Ret., her husband of 64 years. Her husband�s 30-year career as Naval Officer brought with it postings to remarkable places, allowing her and their two daughters to experience wonderful cultures in England, Europe and the Orient. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and of the Order of the Eastern Star, Lynnhaven Chapter 184. She was proud to be a charter member of the Francis Asbury Methodist Church, and considered those in the church and the choir to be her family. Treasuring her kind and generous spirit for all time are her husband, George; her two daughters and their families, Sharon and Pat Gruber of Flemington, WV and Sara and Tim Boyd of Chapel Hill, NC. Her extended family includes a grandson, Chris Gruber; his daughter, Emma Rose, and a granddaughter, Theresa, her husband Steve, and their children, Mitchel and Spencer. 1927-2008 GRAYSON - Cloetine Hazel Miller Campbell, 81, of Grayson went to be with her Lord on Friday, December 12, at St. Claire Medical Center in Morehead. She was born February 11, 1927 in Carter Co., a daughter of the late Taylor and Ada Moore Miller. She owned and operated the Campbell Family Care Center for 22 years, was a member of the Pactolus Methodist Church and a KY colonel. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Walter Campbell in 2006; one grandson, Keith Campbell; three sisters, Garnett Suttles, Loraine Kelly and Mary Blanche Finnerty; three brothers, Roy Miller, Clay Suttles and Gene Suttles. Her survivors include two sons, James (Kathy) Campbell and Arnold (Mary) Campbell both of Grayson; one daughter, Glenda (Jim) Flannery of Oldtown; one brother, Jackie Suttles of Grayson; ten grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Torsie Keaton 1931-2008 OLIVE HILL - Torsie Keaton, age 77, of Horton Lane, Olive Hill, went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday afternoon, December 16, at the Saint Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead. He was born September 10, 1931, in Carter County, a son of the late Ephrian A. and Minerva Smith Keaton. Torsie was a loving father, grandfather, brother and a friend to all who knew him. He was a retired truck driver. He loved serving the Lord and going to church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of forty-four years, Valinda Lodena Smith Keaton; one grandson, Brian King; five brothers, Kenneth Keaton, Kermit Keaton, Herbert Keaton, Lloyd Keaton and Frank Seagraves; four sisters, Dorothy Rose, Goldie Nolen, Lillian Webb and Earlene Dughman. Nancie Lee Stone - 1933-2008 Nancie Lee Stone, age 75, of Cincinnati, Ohio, died Sunday, Dec. 14, 2008. She was born 15 Feb 1933, in Grayson, Ky., daughter of the late Nora Lee Hubbard and Daniel Whitby Stone. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dan and Nora Lee; brothers, Daniel Wadsworth Stone and Hubbard Nelson Stone; sisters, Virginia Stone Wilson and Lucy Catherine Stone; niece, Marolyn Sue Wilson Collier; and sister-in-law, Florene Howard Stone. She is survived by a brother, James Stone of Huntington, W.Va.; a sister-in-law, Ruth Taylor Stone of Corbin, Ky.; nephew, Dan Stone of Harlan, Ky.; nieces, Carolyn Wilson Dyer, Blake Wilson Adams of Georgetown, Ky., and Cynthia Ruth Stone of Danville, Ky.; great-nieces and nephews, Stanya Dyer Kragel, Kris Dyer of Lexington, Ky., Kevin Dyer of Georgetown, James and John Stone, Hannah Stone of Harlan, Michaela Stone of Danville, and Elizabeth Jade Adams and Taylor Adams of Georgetown; great-great-nephews and niece, Kameron Kragel, Karleigh Kragel, and Benton Curry Dyer. Nancie attended Prichard High School, graduating in 1951 as one of two Salutorians of her class. She attended Eastern Kentucky University from 1951-1955 and received a bachelor of science degree in home economics. Following graduation, in 1955-57, she was home economist at the Kentucky Power Co. in Ashland, Ky. She went on to serve as director of the Martha White Test Kitchen in Huntington from 1957 to 1963. Then from 1963 to 1971, she was executive director for the Tri-River Council of Camp Fire Inc. of Huntington. In 1972, she joined Givaudan (formerly Givaudan Roure Flavors) where she was director of special projects. During her 29 years with Givaudan, she has played a major role in growing a small test kitchen into the present �state-of-the-art� research facility that it is today. She was commended by the organization for making significant contributions during a series of growth moves through new corporate owners. In a recent company publication, she was further cited for her �positive attitude, untiring work ethic and her understanding of the need for corporate flexibility.� During the earlier years of Nancie�s career, she made major contributions to youth and community programs. She also was active in live television commercials and product demonstrations. She was selected as National Outstanding Alumnae for Eastern Kentucky University in 1997-98. Her desire is to now contribute to the lives of young people through an endowed scholarship fund for the Eastern Kentucky University Foundation, Inc., for: A). Any female student enrolled full-time at Eastern Kentucky University. B.) A resident of Kentucky, Ohio, or West Virginia. C). The student must be employed either on or off campus a minimum of 10 hours per week. D.) A 3.0 GPA standing must be maintained to reapply. The first Nancie L. Stone scholarship was awarded for the 1998-99 academic year. Nancie retired from Givaudan Food Corp. Nancie is also a Honor Roll Member of the Legacy Society of Eastern Kentucky University. Judy Kay Boggs 1948-2008 GRAYSON - Judy Kay Boggs, 60, of Grayson, went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, October 28, at her residence. She was born January 18, 1948 at Olive Hill, a daughter of the late Charles W. and Clara Elizabeth Bailey Burchett. She was employed with Northeast Head Start for 18 years and was a member of the Stinson Church of Christ, the Grayson Homemakers and the Red Hat Society. Albert Barker, Jr. 1924-2008 GRAHN � Albert Barker, Jr. (know to family and friends as June, Junior, and in earlier years, Dude), age 84, of Oats Hill Road, Grahn, husband of Lucille Lowe Barker, passed away Sunday, November 9, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Huntington, W.Va. Born September 7, 1924, he was the son of the late Albert and Amanda Mosier Barker. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Donald Gene Barker; and two brothers, Earl Barker and Willard Barker. In addition to his wife, Lucille; Junior is survived by one son, Ronald Lee (Judy) Barker of Grahn; one daughter, Joyce Ann (J.D.) 1932-2008 OLIVE HILL - Barbara Delores Kegley Bledsoe, age 76, of Flat Fork Road in Olive Hill, passed away Wednesday evening, November 19, in the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington. She was born June 1, 1932, in Carter County, a daughter of the late Oscar and Dora Griffey Kegley. Delores was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend to all who knew her. She was a homemaker and devoted twenty-six years caring for her brother Tommy. She was a Christian and a member of the Bowen Chapel Freewill Baptist Church for over twenty-five years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of twenty-six years, Millard Franklin Bledsoe; five brothers, William �Bill� Kegley, Roger Kegley, Oscar Kegley Jr., Orville Kegley and Lowell �Tommy� Kegley; two sisters, Lillian Kegley and Edith Kegley; one son-in-law, Richard Zollars. Ralph Planck 1925-2008 MOREHEAD � Ralph Planck, age 83, of Sayre Drive, Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, November 9, 2008, at the U. K. Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky. He was born February 4, 1925, in Carter County, Kentucky, and was the son of the late Allie and Eliza Belle Lovelace Plank. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Grace Estep Planck on June 8, 1989; one grandson, Chris Kissinger; six brothers, Harold Planck, Marvin Planck, Vernon Plank, Wendell Plank, Darriel Plank, and Otha Plank; and two sisters, Georgia Carter and Vesta Plank. Ralph is survived by his wife, Ollie �Ottie� Buckler Day Planck, whom he married May 3, 1991; two children, Clifford (Sandy) Planck of Lexington, Kentucky, and Barbara Kissinger of Morehead; two stepchildren, Ronnie (Sandi) Day and Judy (Lowell, Jr.) Pennington, of Morehead, Kentucky; 5 grandchildren; 6 step grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; 7 step great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandson; and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by six sisters, Vada Estep and Phyllis Rogers, both of Morehead, Kentucky, Arvetta Dean of Hayes Crossing, Kentucky, Ona Bennett and Joyce Riddle, both of Marion, Indiana, and Shirley Davis of Selma, Indiana; and one brother, Curt Planck of Lenoir City, Tennessee. Ralph was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a lifelong automobile and truck mechanic. He was employed for 17 years at the Lewis Garage and was the former owner of several Morehead businesses, including Planck�s Shell Station on West Main Street, Planck & Kissinger International Harvester Truck Dealership from 1969 � 1971, Eagle Transit Service that provided limousine and taxi service from 1991 � 1996. Ralph enjoyed his family and working around the house and loved to fish. Ralph was well-known and appreciated for his �fish frying� by family and friends and many church and charitable organizations. He was a member of the Clearfield Tabernacle First Church of God. Glen Steven Clay 1959-2008 GRAYSON - Glen Steven Clay, 49, of Grayson, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, October 19, at his residence surrounded by his family. He was born September 14, 1959 in Ashland, a son of William Franklin and Erlene LeMaster Clay of Grayson. Steve was an insurance agent with Ky. Farm Bureau. He was a member, deacon and one of the founders of Freedom Baptist Church, where he was also the Sunday School Superintendent and a Sunday School teacher. He attended Southland Bible College. Steve was a former Defensive Coordinator of East Carter High School Football, with a total of 26 years of football coaching. He coached several baseball and basketball teams. Lowell Franklin Maddix 1923-2008 MARYSVILLE, OH - Lowell Franklin Maddix, age 85, of Marysville, Ohio, formerly of Carter County, went home to be with his Savior Monday afternoon, October 20, at the Union County Memorial Hospital in Marysville. He was born June 25, 1923, in Carter County, a son of the late Robert Samuel and Ida Lawson Maddix. Lowell was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle and friend to all who knew him. He was a Christian and retired after thirty-six years of service from the Columbus Metal Forge, a.k.a. Columbus Bolt Works, where he worked as a machinist. He was a WWII veteran, a member of the Railroad Division. He attended many reunions of the division and attended the WWII Memorial Dedication in Washington, D.C. with his brother Tom Maddix and the Carter County Veterans. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by four brothers, Arnold Maddix, Billy Wayne Maddix, Glen Maddix and Paul Maddix; a granddaughter, Lisa Ann Delgarn. Stearl Mosier 1923-2008 OLIVE HILL - Stearl Mosier, age 85, of Olive Hill, went home to be with the Lord, Thursday evening, October 23, at the Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland. He was born July 9, 1923, in Grahn, a son of the late Jess and Rhoda Blevins Mosier. Stearl was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and a friend to all who knew him. He served his country during World War II with United States Army, was retired from the Louisville Fire Brick yard in Grahn, and he attended the Providence Free Will Baptist Church. One of his greatest passions was sitting on the porch and telling stories of long ago to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren along with his many nieces and nephews who absolutely adored him. He has been a father and grandfather figure to numerous young people down through his life that will never forget him. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Roger Dale �Boo� Mosier and Donald Ray �Don� Mosier; two daughters, Joan Tackett Carroll and Rita Lynn Mosier; two grandsons, Neil Tackett and Ron Wilson; one sister, Alma Dickerson. DeWayne Allen Barber 1974-2008 OTTER LAKE, MICHIGAN - DeWayne Allen Barber, 33, of Otter Lake, Michigan, formerly of Grayson, passed away from injuries from a job related accident Sunday, October 5, in Traverse City, Michigan. He was born October 11, 1974 in Grayson, a son of the late Charles and Betty Hall Barber. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by grandparents, Etta M. Hall and Steve and Dolly Barber; uncles, Jess W. Hall, John Hay and June Hay; and a brother-in-law, Odie Wayne Bryant. His survivors include his wife, Dori Jo Stephen Barber of Otter Lake, MI; his children, Kerrick Barber, Kaden Barber and Kenzie Barber all of Grayson and Kyle Derscha and Kali Derscha both of Otter Lake; three sisters, Sharon Bryant of Grayson, Jennifer �Sissie� (Robert) Brown of Lewisport, and Tamira (Daniel) Barker of Grayson; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends. Dewayne was employed by MJ Electric and a member of IBEW Local 369 out of Louisville, and IBEW Local 876 out of Grand Rapids, Michigan. He was a 1993 graduate of East Carter County High School. He was a member of the ECHS football team and was recognized as Raider of the Year in 1992 and 1993. Dewayne enjoyed life, loved his children, his family and his friends. He was always ready to give a helping hand to anyone who needed one; he could always put a smile on everyone�s faces. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Amanda Tyree Jaynes 1915-2008 GRAYSON - Amanda Tyree Jaynes, 93, a resident of the Chapel House in Grayson, passed away Saturday October 11, at the Ashland Community Hospice Care Center. She was born August 9, 1915 at Hitchins, a daughter of the late Gaines and Rena Reliford Tyree and was a member of the Olive Hill United Methodist Church. Also preceding her in death was her husband of sixty-seven years, Raymond S. Jaynes; one daughter, Peggy Jaynes Duvall Kiser; two sisters, Evelyn Tyree Jaynes and Geneva Tyree James; and her two brothers, Earl and Crawford Tyree. He was born May 24, 1959, in Carter County, a son of the late Pondes and Laura David Pelfrey. Tim was an eighteen-year employee of Globe Hardware, where he worked as a laborer. Mitchell Ray Kiser 1942-2008 GULFPORT, MS - Chief Warrant Officer Mitchell Ray Kiser, US Navy, Ret, age 66, of Gulfport, passed away on September 27, in Gulfport. He is survived by his wife, Diane Holleman Kiser, of Gulfport; his daughter, Lisa Kiser Scott, and her husband, Ros, of Atlanta, GA; his son, Tim Kiser, and his wife, Vera, of Atlanta; his grandson, Christopher Vargas, of Atlanta, his sister, Von Osborne, and her husband, Richard, of Firebrick; his aunts, Bern Setty of Portsmouth, OH and Joy Floyd and her husband, Wade, of Dayton, OH; his uncle, Roger Lewis, and his wife, Barbara, of Portsmouth, OH; his brother in laws, Dean Holleman and his wife, Laura, Tim Holleman and his wife, Lisa, and Mike Holleman and his wife, Debbie, all of Gulfport; and his sister in law, Amy Angel, and her husband, Michael Martin of Gulfport. Mitch was born in Grayson, on May 25, 1942. He was a graduate of Carter High School, Carter City, in 1960. Mitch graduated from Ohio University, Athens, OH in 1970 with a BBA and Xavier University, Cincinnati, OH in 1976 with a MBA. He was a member of Bayou View Baptist Church. He entered the US Army in 1961 and after a tour in Vietnam in 1963, he joined the US Navy Reserve where he retired as Chief Warrant Officer 04 in 1997. He was a Special Agent with the Inspector General's Office in Atlanta, GA and retired in 1999. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #769, Portsmouth, OH, A & A Scottish Rite, Atlanta, GA as a 32nd degree Mason, the Naval Reserve Association, the American Legion, the Navy Seabee Veterans of America, the Association of Federal Investigators, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, and the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association. Carla Michelle Gilliam Fliger September 23, 2008 MANSFIELD - Carla Michelle Gilliam Fliger's life was tragically taken from her Friday morning September 19, 2008. She was born January 5, 1973 in Olive Hill, Kentucky to Carlos Roy and Loretta Gilliam, and was a lifelong Mansfield resident. Michelle was very family oriented, and is remembered as a peace-maker. She had a big heart, so full of love and kindness that she'd "give you the shirt off her back." She was a hard worker - the kind of girl who would "work her fingers to the bone" in order to get ahead. That strong work ethic is what made her such a valued member of the team at Mansfield Assemblies Company. She started working there in October of 1997, and quickly became a well respected employee. Michelle was currently the group leader of the Titan Line. Described as a wonderful mom, "the kids" were Michelle's world. What time she did take for herself, Michelle filled with flowers, butterflies and cherubs. Michelle could be funny, and her infectious laughter could make a room full of people roar. She'd laugh so hard she'd tear up. She recently began attending Cook Road Baptist Church. Michelle dearly loved her family of daughters Whitney Danielle Bryant and Hailey Dawn Fliger; her son Cody Michael Fliger; her mother and step father Loretta Gilliam Newlon and Michael Newlon of Mansfield; her sister Debra D. Emil Carroll September 20, 2008 MANSFIELD - Emil Carroll, 77, died Wednesday evening, September 17, 2008, at his home. Born April 20, 1931, in Olive Hill, Kentucky, he was the son of Tom and Ruthie (Holbrook) Carroll. He retired from Armco Steel and was a member of the United Steelworkers Local 169. He was a former Madison Township Trustee and former Richland County Bee Inspector. Emil attended Real Life Community Church. He was a member of V.F.W. Post #9943, where he was Past Commander and current Trustee, Sons of Herman, Fraternal Order of the Eagles #336, Moose Lodge #341, Shiloh Masonic Lodge #544, F. & A.M., 32nd Degree Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Canton. Emil served his country in the U.S. Army and with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He was affectionately known as "Popsey" to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. MANSFIELD -- Troy Arnold Holbrook, 94, died Monday, Aug. 4, 2008, at Crystal Care Center. He went home to be with his Lord. Troy was born Jan. 23, 1914, in Grahn, Ky., to Walter and Virgie (Holbrook) Holbrook. He came to Mansfield in the mid 50s and began construction work through Labor Local 1216 before beginning work for DSL in 1969, from which he retired. Troy was the oldest living member of the Dean Road Freewill Baptist Church, being a member there for 48 years. In his earlier years, Troy was an avid fisherman, enjoyed gardening, hunting and the outdoors. He was also a great fan of the Cleveland Indians and watching his favorite player, Jim Thome. Franklin D. �Jack� Catron 1934-2008 MOREHEAD � Franklin D. �Jack� Catron, 73, of Maple Lane passed away Tuesday, April 8, 2008 in the St. Claire Regional Medical Center. He was born on July 17, 1934 in Carter County, Kentucky, a son of the late John and Kate Nickles Catron. Mr. Catron was a retired machine setter for Ford Motor Company in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Loyd "Steelhead" Sammons Loyd �Steelhead� Sammons, 90, died August 1, at the home of his daughter Chrystal McCormick of Idaho Falls. Loyd had just celebrated his 90th birthday with his daughters and their families on July 24. Loyd was born and raised in Hitchens, Kentucky. He lived in Hitchins until he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and was sent to Camp Challis in Idaho. His CCC years were some of the �best years of my life� he later would say. It was in the CCCs he received the nickname of �Steelhead� which was the only name many of the older residents of Challis knew him by. Loyd later worked for Boeing in Seattle. At the entry of the USA in WWII, he enlisted in the Marines and was part of the battle of Iwo Jima. Following the war, he returned to Challis in 1946 where he has lived since. On May 16, 1948, he married Doris Gardiol of Challis whose parents and grandparents had been some of the early-day pioneers in the Challis and Mackay areas. He worked for the U.S. Forest Service in the Challis National Forest until his retirement. For more than 50 years, he was a member of the American Legion, where he was a service officer helping veterans and veterans� widows receive their benefits. One of his highest obligations was honoring those who had fought for their country. He also was a member of the Masonic Lodge, volunteered at Senior Citizens and had a great interest in the Challis Museum. Loyd and Doris� yard is an object of admiration for many Challis residents. Although in recent years, Doris had to reduce the size of her flower beds and Loyd didn�t have a garden, their yard still looked neat as a pin and beautiful to boot. Loyd couldn�t resist tending the volunteer sunflowers or potatoes that popped up. Survivors include his daughters, Marie Sasser of Boise, Chrystal (Steve) McCormick of Idaho Falls and Delores (Doug) Rumble of Ammon; sisters Anna Lois Burke of Cabin Creek, W.Va and Elizabeth Rogers of Ceredo, W.Va; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grand-children. He was preceded in death by his parents and six brothers and one sister. Funeral services were held at the Challis Mission Church, August 7. Graveside military rites were performed by Philip Kirk Post of the American Legion. His grandson, Dan Rumble who is with the Idaho National Guard training in Texas to be sent to Irag, participated in the rites as well and presented the flag to Doris. Doris will be staying at her daughter Chrystal�s in Idaho Falls until returning to Challis with her daughter Marie later on in September. Loyd always greeted everyone with a smile and a joke. Many Challisites were very helpful in �watching� out for Loyd in his purple car as he checked out the changes at the Challis Golf Course or the activities at the Forest Service compound. �Semper Fi (always faithful)", the Marine Corps motto, was also true of Loyd�s life. He was faithful in his service to his family, his community and his country. Loyd was born in Kentucky and loved his heritage, but Challis, Idaho was in his heart. ELIAS HOWARD SELLARDS (1875-1961) Dr. Elias Howard Sellards, Professor, Director Emeritus of the Bureau of Economic Geology, former Director of the Texas Memorial Museum, and distinguished geologist, died at the age of 85 in Austin, Texas, February 4, 1961. Dr. Sellards was born May 2, 1875, at Carter, Kentucky. The family moved to Kansas by covered wagon when Dr. Sellards was a youth. He attended school both at Carter, Kentucky, and Scranton, Kansas, completing his high school education at Scranton in 1894. He was a student at Washburn Academy at Topeka, Kansas, and then attended the University of Kansas at Lawrence and was graduated with the BA degree in 1899; he received the MA degree from that University in 1900. He continued graduate study from 1901 to 1903 at Yale University, holding both a scholarship and fellowship, and received the PhD degree in 1903. At Yale his work brought him under the influence of three famous teachers, Charles Schuchert, Charles E. Beecher, and H.S. Williams. Charles Schuchert became a close personal friend and visited Dr. Sellards many times in his home. Dr. Sellards began his teaching career as Instructor in Geology and Mineralogy at Rutgers College, New Brunswick, New Jersey, during the 1903-1904 school year. He accepted the Chair of Professor of Geology and Zoology at the University of Florida, at Gainesville, in 1904 and continued in this position until 1907, when he became State Geologist of Florida and moved to Tallahassee. While he was Florida State Geologist, he published 12 annual reports, two bulletins, and numerous articles of enduring prominence. These publications related mainly to basic geology and mineral resources of Florida. During this period he devoted considerable attention to fossil vertebrates, especially early man, and was constantly on the alert for evidence of early man. In 1913, human remains were found in the undisturbed wall of a canal at Vero (now Vero Beach), Florida. This discovery resulted in a conference of noted scientists at the site in 1916. Dr. Sellards moved to Texas in 1918 to accept the position of Geologist on the staff of the Bureau of Economic Geology offered by Dr. J. A. Udden, then Director. He was appointed Associate Director of the Bureau in 1925 and succeeded to the Directorship in 1932, which position he held until 1945 when he was placed on modified service. He was appointed Professor of Geology and a member of the Graduate Faculty at the University of Texas in 1926 and was Director of the Texas Memorial Museum, Austin, from 1938 until retirement in 1957. He was the Director Emeritus of the Bureau of Economic Geology from 1945 until his death, maintaining an office in J Hall on The Little Campus and entering into the activities of the Bureau as his physical condition permitted. During his 39 years of service at UT-Austin, Dr. Sellards attacked geological and paleontological problems with insatiable interest. One of his first assignments, placed on him by the Attorney General of Texas, was to determine the original boundary between Oklahoma and Texas along the Red River. He presented his work so thoroughly that the Supreme Court of the United States rendered an opinion favorable to Texas. Between never-ending administrative duties, he found time to author and edit extensive reports on the geology and mineral resources of Texas. Among the important contributions are the two-volume compendium on the stratigraphy and structure of Texas, with accompanying geologic and structural maps of the State, and a book on "Early Man in America" including bibliography of literature on the subject. He was engaged on extensive revision of this book at the time of his death. During W.P.A. days, Dr. Sellards directed a paleontological project which assembled an outstanding collection of Pleistocene fossils remains. He taught stratigraphy in the Department of Geology and supervised 17 Master�s students and one PhD student. Dr. Sellards participated in University affairs by serving on the Sharp-Cullinan Scholarship Committee. He was largely responsible for initiating the Petroleum Engineering Department of the University. The University of Kansas presented the Erasmus Haworth Award for a distinguished alumnus in 1958 to him at an alumni luncheon in Los Angeles and the University of Florida has established the Sellards� Geology Student Award in his honor because of his contributions to basic geology in that state. .................................... Keaton, 84, prominent Oklahoma attorney since 1890, died at 7 pm Wednesday at Wesley hospital of a heart ailment following an illness of several days. Formerly vice-president of the American Bar Association and president of the state bar, Keaton was noted for more than 50 years among Oklahoma City attorneys as a stickler for legal ethics, a crusader for governmental reforms and economy in all branches of government. Identified with numerous non-partisan campaigns... Known for his part in the fight against the Jack Walton administration which led to the impeachment of the governor. Keaton refused to run for corporation commissioner during the Walton regime. In later years the prominent attorney took a stand against the encroachment of oil wells within the city limits... Keaton was born in Carter County, Kentucky, December 10, 1861. He graduated from National Normal university at Lebanon, Ohio, in 1884 and took his law degree at Georgetown university in 1890. Keaton left Kentucky in 1884 for Texas where he became the principal of Hico high school and served as publisher and editor of the Hico Courier for two years. Admitted to the bar in 1890 he married Lucille Johnston of Denton, Texas, the same year and formed a law firm with John H. Cotterel at Guthrie, where he practiced law until 1896, when he was appointed associate justice of the supreme court of the Oklahoma territory. Active in the state bar association since its founding. Judge Keaton served on the executive committee of the American Bar Association for three years and in 1935 was elected vice president of the national legal society. He was delegate from Oklahoma county to the first state Democratic convention and served on the committee on resolutions. In 1902 he became a member of the law firm of Shartel, Keaton and Wells. The firm was re-organized in 1912 as Keaton, Wells and Johnston. Judge Keaton, a lifetime member of the Oklahoma Historical Society, was admitted to the Oklahoma Hall of Fame in 1937. He was a member of the Men's Dinner Club of Oklahoma City. Survivors include a stepson, Clarence J. Keaton, 1710 N Eastern, a brother, E. F. She was born Feb. 28, 1926, in Olive Hill, Ky., the daughter of Herbert and Roma Burton Erwin. A Warren area resident since 1948, coming from Kentucky, Dorothy retired from St. Joseph�s Hospital, where she worked in the dietary department. A caring homemaker, she was a former member of the Bazetta Christian Church and a member of the Social Order of Beauceant Warren Assembly 77. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vern Tackett, whom she married in 1948, and six brothers and sisters. Betty Rae Evans Oakley MANSFIELD -- Betty Rae Evans Oakley, 74, died Tuesday, March 25, 2008, at home. Born July 10, 1933, in Carter County, Ky., she was the daughter of William Vernon and Lenora Henderson Evans. A Godly and gentle soul, she never had a harsh word for anyone. In her younger days she resembled Elizabeth Taylor, but her beauty was so much more than external -- she had an inherent goodness and gentleness that humbled. She delighted in the cheerful song of the robin and was awed by the marvels of nature that God created. She was particularly enamored of the sea and its wonders. She was of the Christian faith and lived a Christian life. Betty enjoyed working in her flower gardens, history, reading, bingo, garage sales and Saturday shopping trips. She was a gifted writer and composed poems that brought tears to the eyes. Most of all, she cherished time spent with her children, grandchildren, and in the last few months, her newest great-grandchild, Alyssa Smith, who was a never ending source of joy to her in her final days. She was a career homemaker who devoted her life to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She instilled in them moral values and sacrificed in order to provide for them. Her unconditional love, compassion, faith, and support were unfailing. She was the epitome of the word "mother" and words cannot describe how very much her family will miss her. She was our rock, our anchor, our treasure. On Feb. 7, 1953, she married Jimmie F. Oakley, who preceded her in death Nov. 17, 1994. "Mawsie" was greatly be-loved by all who came in contact with her. The world has lost a great person with her passing, but heaven has gained a beautiful angel. We love you, mama, grandma, great-grandma, sister, and aunt. In our hearts, you will go on. In leaving this world, Theodore left the love of his life, Gladys, his wife of nearly 63 years. Theodore was born and raised in Olive Hill and Morehead, Kentucky. In 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Army/Air Force, to serve in World War II?service of which he was forever proud. Stationed in England, Theodore served as an aerial photographer flying over 20 B-17 missions over France and Germany. While stationed in England, Theodore met Gladys in Yorkshire, England. They married there on the day after Franklin D. Roosevelt died. After the war had ended, Gladys came to the United States to join Theodore in Dayton, where they raised three children, Grant, Wanda, and Philip, all of whom survive him. Theodore worked as a scientific photographer for 38 years at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton. His greatest love was his family, with whom he enjoyed traveling, especially the many camping trips with Gladys, his children and grandchildren. Until recently, he enjoyed his long, daily walks. For many years, Theodore was an active member of Parkview Church of the Nazarene in Dayton, and more recently was a member of Northwest United Methodist Church, Columbus. Theodore is also survived by his grandchildren: Matthew, Gillian, Zachary, Allison, Nathan, Austin, Caitlin, Adam, and Miranda; daughters-in-law Sharon and Karen, son-in-law, Bill Liddle, and numerous nephews and nieces, including Sheila (Leon) Miller; great grandchildren: Julia, Madelyn, Benjamin, Andrew, and Paul, and five step-great grandchildren, Emma, David, Claire, Eva, and Anna; and two sisters Nora Hester and Jeanelle. Fred Adrian Bradford went to be with his Lord on Sunday, February 3, 2008 in Carter Nursing & Rehab. He was born August 30, 1926 at Hitchins KY a son of the late Earl and Lee Eunice Crum Bradford. He was retired from General Refractories in Hitchins in 1978 and then worked as a general contractor and carpenter until his passing. He was preceded in death by four brothers: Earl Wade Bradford, Donald Ray Bradford, James "Buddy" Bradford, Dewey Edward Bradford; one sister Martha Winters and his first wife Eileen Hall Bradford. He is survived by his wife of 19 years Joyce Ann Adkins Knipp Bradford. Dr. Robert Webb Aug 15, 1922 - Feb 5, 2008 Dr. Robert C. Webb, 85, of Grayson, passed away on the 5th day of February. �Doc� was the son of James G. Webb and Lorene Gilbert Webb Boggs. He was married to Linda Mobley Webb for 48 years and the proud father of state Rep. Robin L. Webb, a local attorney, and Robert Webb (Melissa Noonan Webb), a Louisville attorney. His greatest love was his grandchildren, Lindsay and Troy Combs of Grayson and Robert Coleman and John Clayton Webb of Louisville. A brother, Carl (Linda) Webb, survives, along with nieces and nephews. �Doc� practiced optometry for 50 years, primarily on Main Street in Grayson. An avid outdoorsman, he served as commissioner of the 8th District for the Department of Fish and Wildlife, serving under nine governors. He served several terms as chairman of the Commission and Jr. Conservation Education Camp Webb on Grayson Lake, which was named in his honor. He was a veteran of World War II and served in the Army and Air Corps as a pilot. As a young man, he founded many Jaycee chapters in east Kentucky as well as being active in the Young Republicans. He was committed to the downtown he loved as he assisted in placing the first street signs in Grayson, and later in life built his office back in the same location after a devastating fire. He enjoyed hosting the Saturday morning program of 25 years �Game Club of the Air,� a Kentucky broadcasting milestone for a continuous program. He served as president of the Kentucky Walking Horse Association for several terms and continued to announce horse shows throughout the state with a distinctive voice and humor that was an audience favorite. He enjoyed his cattle as well as hunting and fishing, especially time in the field with his bird dogs, children and friends. He loved his family, the region, his community and most importantly the people who made his life so rich. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Grayson by Joe Mobley, minister. Burial will be in East Carter County Memory Gardens.
