Note that on Kentucky deeds, properties are described by metes and bounds using compass directions and monuments.
States north of the Ohio River and west of the Mississippi use the Public Lands Survey system rather than metes and bounds.

Federally surveyed states (Indiana is one, Kentucky is not) are divided in townships (eg. Nettle Creek Twp.) of 36 square miles in area.
Townships are in turn divided into 36 numbered sections, each of which is one square mile (640 acres) in area.

Individual sections are further divided into 1-640 acre blocks which are usually directionally identified.
