12-24-1879 Old negroe man, George Thornton was
knocked off a bridge by a train and killed instantly
last Wed.

News A suit for 10, 000 dollars brought by a
colored woman of Paris against Luke Connelly for
killing her husband resulted in a verdict of an
award of 1 cent.

Richardson, a young white man , stabbed and
instantly killed John Owens, colored, at Oliver's
Store Sunday
1916 & 1917
“Negroe News” --Body
of Mrs. Annie T. Hume, who died in Lexington Feb. 21st,
was brought here for burial. Funeral was at the
Broadway Baptist Church, Wed., Feb. 23, by Rev. J.S.
Henderson who was assisted by Rev H.C. Baker. She was a
member of that church since it was formed. She was
remembered with many floral tributes. Miss Ida May
Martin of Welch, West Virginia and Mrs. Hager Harris
attended from out of town. Also a nephew, Roy Skinner,
of Bluefield, West Virginia. She leaves 1 daughter, 2
sisters, 2 brothers, 1 nephew, 1 aunt and 1 uncle. Feb
26, 1916
March 4, 1916---
Dynamite explosion at Sloan, about 15 miles our of the
city on the Irvine line, Arthur Johnson, colored, died,
and Ed Freeman, white, was badly injured.
April 1, 1916 Callie
Barnes, negress, was murdered Thursday night by a knife
wound. She was well known because for several years she
was the maid at Union Depot in this city. Her 7 year
old girl, Clarasel, was a witness. Callie was said to
be living with Len Boone, suspect in her murder. The
child will probably be claimed by her grandmother who
lives in Cincinnati, Ohio.
April 1, 1916- DEATH
Edward Bush, colored, at his home in Poynterville this
week. “Uncle Ed” was most respected by all.
April 28, 1916- Sidney
“ Buck” Webb, a Negro was shot and fatally wounded by
Lawrence Hawkins, also a Negro, on Jouetts Creek
Sunday. Hawkins gave himself up, claiming self
defense. Webb died Monday in a Lexington Hospital, but
made a statement that Hawkins and Tom Embry had shot him
in the back while at church.
April 28, 1916 Claude
Lynen, Negro, was found guilty of murder of the
policeman Rufus Heagle in the Pendleton Circuit Court.
Sentenced November 21, to life in penitentiary.

“ There was a block
in front of courthouse where the owners of the slaves
put up and sold them to the highest bidder, at public
outcry. My father owned 17 slaves but put them free in
his will…..
July 7, 1916 Some
weeks ago, David Bell, Negro, shot Sid Hooten, Negro in
a fight in Hootentown in this county.
August 18, 1916-
Eliza Capps, colored, was adjudged a lunatic before a
jury in the county court Monday and was ordered taken to
the Lexington asylum. She was an old slave servant,
belonging the late Doctor Martin of Tebbs Station.
August 18, 1916 Hays
Mack, colored was shot in the back by Mr. Ward Willis
near his place on Clintonville Pike Thursday evening.
September 15, 1916
“Negroe News” funeral
services of James Richard Martyn, 8, who died Tuesday.
His aunt, Sally Martin of Columbus and brother, Paul
Smith of Chicago and father Jim Martin of Paris were out
of town relatives.
Shocked to learn of
the death of the father of Miss Ella Cheeks, our popular
and efficient domestic science teacher.
September 29, 1916
John Guest, one of the best colored men in town, was
killed and Rucker Taylor, another colored man, was
wounded in the leg by Wesley Black, another Negro in a
fray in Jack Garner’s stable on Washington St.
November 3, 1916 Ed
Small, of Paris, well known colored blacksmith, died in
Eastern KY Hospital for the insane in Lexington where he
had been for several years. He was 42.
November 17, 1916
Mrs. Charlotte Hampton who lived with and worked for
Mrs. Eliza Croxton, died suddenly last Tues. Buried in
Daniel Grove Cemetery.
December 8, 1916
Elizabeth Buckley, a colored woman of Washington DC is
125 years old, and it is thought she is the oldest
person in the world. She is older than the state of
KY. Washington was president when she was born.
December 15, 1916 The
remains of TC Barnes who died Dec 7th in
Chicago were brought to Mt. Sterling for burial. He was
the brother of Mrs. “Ma” Jane Barnes of this city.
January 26, 1917 Mary
Ellen Rash, 36, a negress, was found dead on the floor
in her home near Thompson Station. Relatives suspected
she was poisoned, so Coroner Thacker has sent her
stomach to Lexington for analysis. She was the wife of
Claude Rash. She leaves a 13 month old child.
Feb 9 , 1917 Eugene,
little son of Helen Strode died and was buried from the
Becknerville Baptist Church last Tuesday evening.
