African American Coyle's in Bath County KY

Submitted by LeeAnne Poole,  8/2006

I have been dong research on my family and found several African American headstones in  the Coyle family cemetery in Bath County, KY.   The eldest I could  find info about was Adeline Coyle (died Sep. 13, 1889, aged 70?), servant to  George Coyle.  In census reports, Adeline was with George for nearly 50  years.  The inscription on her headstone looks like it reads "aged 20  years", but it may be a scratch on the marker. Adeline was George Coyle’s servant – shown in 1870 census as age 50, making her 70 at death.

There are also (I think) children of Adeline buried there, Mandy (b. May  1845, d. May 20, 1888), Cordelia (b. May 6, 1850, d. Aug. 1964) and  Sanford (b. Dec. 20, 1850, d. Jan 20, 1880, and listed as "colored" on the  headstone).

Coyle Cemetery is located on Prickly Ash along Washington Branch,  near Owingsville in Bath County, KY.  Visit the library in Owingsville for  instructions on how to find it.  The George Coyle farm was located nearby  and some of the original foundations remain.
