Obituary - Silvas Shirley

“Lead on O King Eternal, we follow not with fear. Through days of preparation, thy grace has made us strong.

“Mr. Silvas Shirley, known to all as “Rock”, was born in Barren County, Kentucky to the late William Turner Shirley and Mrs. Katie Crenshaw Shirley, August 8, 1912. He grew up in this county, attended the public school system and joined the Old Blue Spring Baptist Church at an early age.

“March 15, 1937, Rock was united in marriage to Miss Emma Childress and a son, Joe Wayne, was born to this union. Early in his life as a young man, Rock moved his membership to First Baptist Church, Glasgow, Kentucky, and proved to be a loyal and faithful member until his health failed. For many years he served the church as a Trustee. He executed this duty well and will be remembered for the painstaking care and concern he gave and showed in taking care of inside and outside premises. He showed great devotion to all clubs and organizations by financial and personal support.

“Mr. Shirley was diligent in work and operated Shirley’s Coal Yard for several years. His keen business sense and mind also led him in employment of trucking, dealing in wood and other versatile deeds of labor. He was a family man, a dutiful son-in-law and brother-in-law. He will also be remembered as a man who gave of himself, his time and kindness to his fellow man and neighbor.

“He is survived by a loving, faithful and most dutiful wife, Mrs. Emma Shirley, Glasgow Kentucky; one son, Joe Wayne, Glasgow, Kentucky; two sisters, Mrs. Penelope Burrough, San Diego, California and Mrs. Verlaine Williams, Buffalo, New York; one brother, William Turner Shirley, Jr., Buffalo, New York, six grandchildren; one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Wanda Shirley, Glasgow, Kentucky; two brothers-in-law, Amos Childress and John Paul Childress; three sisters-in-law, Miss Eleanor Childress, Mrs. Grace Childress and Mrs. Camilla Childress; two nephews, two nieces and a host of other relatives and friends.

“There is a land of pure delight,

Where saints immortal reign,

Infinite day excludes the night,

And pleasures banishes pain.

There everlasting spring abides

And never withering flowers,

Death like a narrow sea divides,

This heavenly land from ours.
