I am looking for information on 2 Sumner Co. family names:
1. My g-grandfather Orange CRAIN and wife Delilah (STALEY) CRAIN came to KS in the fall of 1878 from Angola IN. We had been told they had settled in the Harper/Sumner Co. area, but had no conclusive facts about this. I have since found an 1883 Sumner Co. Atlas and it showed Orange CRAIN in NE 1/4 of Section 31, probably in Ryan Twp., with 160 acres. Just above him is E. CRAIN with 120 acres in Section 30. I would assume this is Ernest B. CRAIN, Orange's oldest son, who would have been about 23 in 1883. Other family members were: John L. CRAIN (b. 1863), Worth, Edith, Estella (b.1857, m. BURNHAM. Other persons they traveled with might be the CARTER family, including Otis E. CARTER, (probably a teenager at that time), J.W. HERDON, and Eugene HALSTEAD.
2. My grandmother Alice WILSON came to Kansas from Clark Co. MI with her parents, William Glasgow WILSON and Union Josephine (Pherigo) WILSON, around 1889. She talked about living near Milan KS, but also mentioned Cheney KS. They moved on to OK around 1895.
The family dates are: William Glasgow Wilson (b. 1853), Union Josephine Pherigo Wilson (b. 1862). Their children: Alice (b. 1882), Nora (b. 1885), Viola (b. 1880), Clarence (b. 1887), Celia (b. 1893) A daughter, Florence was born about 1889 and died 1890. She might be married near Milan.

As time went by one of the boys (Ernest SHIRES, Sr.) married (possibly as a second wife) our LIllian Maud(e) ATTWOOD, the youngest known child of John Edward Attwood and his wife, Sarah Elizabeth Webb ATTWOOD. I am looking for information on 2 Sumner Co. family names.
1. My gr.grandfather Orange CRAIN and wife Delilah Staley CRAIN came to Ks. in the fall of 1878 from Angola, IN. We had heard they had settled in the Harper/ Sumner Co. area, but had no conclusive facts about this.
Just last week I found an 1883 Sumner Co. Atlas and it showed Orange CRAIN in NE 1/4 of Section 31, probably Ryan Twp., with 160 acres. Just above him is E. Crain with 120 acres, in Sect. 30. I would assume this is Ernest B. CRAIN, Orange's oldest son, who would have been about 23 in 1883. Other family members were John L. CRAIN b. in 1863; Worth CRAIN, b. ??; Edith CRAIN b. ?; and Estella Crain BURNHAM b. 1857 - don't know husband's first name. Other persons they traveled with might be the CARTER family, including Otis E. CARTER probably a teenager at that time; J. W. HERDON, and Eugene HALSTEAD.
2. My grandmother Alice WILSON came to Kansas from Missouri with her parents William Glasgow WILSON (b. 1853) and Union Josephine Pherigo WILSON (b. 1862), around 1889. She talked about living near Milan, Ks (Sumner Co.), but has also mentioned Cheney, Ks. They moved on to Oklahoma around 1895. Their children: Alice b. 1882; Nora b. 1885, Viola b. 1880, Clarence, b. 1887, Celia b. 1893. A daughter Florence b. about 1889, d. 1890, don't know if this was near Milan or where she might be buried.
Would be glad to share any information with others interested, and delighted to receive any new information regarding Sumner Co. ties with any of these people.

Wish to locate legal discription, and present owner w/ phone if possible, on property also. We have a copy of estate notice on John E Attwood from a newspaper ...notice to the probate court dated 23 Dec 1886 by his wife Sarah, but no other info so far on the cause of his death, exact date of Death, or burial verification other than this letter written in 1925 by one of his sons to another son. Jim LE FORCE dwas supposedly the first non-native American born in Sumner County. I believe he was honored at the Diamond Jubilee in Wellington and when I studied Wellington history in grade school, this was said to be true. My father was M.K. SEATON who died there in 1962 and my mother was a THOMPSON , born in Millerton near Conway Springs. She had many brothers and sisters all of whom lived in Sumner County. One was the mother of Chuck MILLER , who was a very well known recording star(House of Blue Lights). Hank THOMPSON was a Wellington city commissioner for many years as well as the yard master at the Santa Fe Yards. I have much genealogy information on the Seaton family, but very little on the Thompsons or LeForces. FLORY

My grandfather's brother, Benjamin FLORY, lived in the Argonia area from approx. 1900 to his death in 1944. He may also have resided in Harper county. I believe he was a farmer. He and his wife, Elizabeth ?, are buried in the cemetery in Milan, Sumner County, KS. Only the year of their deaths are given, both 1944. Are there obit records available for Sumner county? What genealogy society is available to advise me on local sources of information. Benjamin and Elizabeth had four girls, I would very much like to contact their descendants. I do not know their married names. They would have been born approx. from 1895 through 1915. I do have pictures of this family.

LANG
2/26/97
My second-greatgrandfather, Christian LANG, lived in Sumner County for many years. I found two books of Sumner County tombstone inscriptions and both list his tombstone, but they give conflicting data. Can someone please help me find what the tombstones actually say?
One book calls the cemetery the "Spring Hill Cemetery". The other calls it the "Conway Cemetery #2". It is located in Spring Dale Township, R 3 W, T 31, sec 8, NE corner of NW 1/2. Location from Conway Springs: 1 S, 1 3/4 W, if any of that is of any use.
The inscriptions are cited in the two books as follows:
Lang, Addie M., b. 5 Aug 1868, d. 27 Jan 1893 Lang, Addie M., b. 5 Aug 1863, d. 19 Dec 1890 Lang, Christian, b. 22 May 1828, d. 5 Jan 1897 Lang, Christian, b. 22 May 1828, d. 1 May 1897 Lang, Ida D., b. 2 July 1892, d. 8 Aug 1894 Lang, Ida D., b. 27 July 1877,d. 8 Aug 1894
As you can see, the two books don't agree on the dates, and it is surprising that they do agree on the names. One book also lists a Lang, Katy E. b. 30 Jan 1869 d. 25 Jan 1893.
I am looking for information on my ggrandfather. The only information I have is that his name was James Morris...and that on January 9, 1876, in Sumner County, Kansas, my grandmother was born. Her name was Anna Retta Morris. She married Lee Calcote Stallings.

Her family (father Samuel, mother Eliz.) farmed in Conway Twp. from 1879 to 1887, and then went to Kingman Co. Delpha's siblings were Martha, Mary, Charles, Rebecca, Minnie, Eliza, and John A. (John born 1884).

Some time between 1878 and 1880 he rode off on his horse and disappeared. His saddle and bridle were found on a fence corner not far from Wellington. My grandmother (his daughter) Elizabeth KNIGHT married Chris HARTMAN in Wellington in 31 Mar 1881.
Looking for birth and death dates for Lewis Foster CHENOWETH (b.1828, OH; d.1918, Sumner Co. KS), son of John Foster CHENOWETH and Margaret FERGUSON and husband of Martha MORGAN, father of Mary Elizabeth CHENOWETH, Laura J CHENOWETH, Rachel Eveline CHENOWETH, Ellida M CHENOWETH, and Jessie CHENOWETH.
I'm trying to find the death record, or information on the parents of my husband's great g-grandmother, Harriet Frances Lynch HOLMAN. She died January 8, 1897 and is buried in the Oxford Cemetery. I've contacted both the Sumner County Clerk (county records destroyed by flood), and the Oxford City Clerk. They've referred me to the director of the Oxford Cemetery. I plan to write to him.
I'd appreciate any leads or help you can give us. We're preparing for the75th annual Holman family reunion this summer, and it would be wonderful if we had some background information on this matriarch. To date, her background has been difficult to trace, although we believe that her father MAY have been a military officer in the Civil War (not much to go on).

I am seeking descendents of Louisa Conklin, born in Meigs County, Ohio to Robert Davis (born l817 in New Hampshire) and Mary Sarsons Davis. Conklin was one of three children. Others were Harriet Brundage (died Buffolo County, Nebraska 11-08-1879) and Charles Davis (died at Battle of Lynchburg during the Civil War).
Louisa E. Conklin was living at Oxford, Sumner County, Kansas, during the l890s. We know that because she petitioned for distribution on the will of her father, Robert Davis, who died in Lincoln County, Nebraska, Sept 4, l883. Mary Sarsons died in l841, and Robert Davis married Elizabeth McNeil. My line is descended through McNeil, but our family would like to find relatives from the first marriage.
Harriet Brundage (Conklin's sister) had three children. Fred
Courtland Brundage (living in Buffolo County, NE at the time of the
petition, and listed as age 8 when Robert died), Ada Maud Brundage,
living in Berlin Heights, Ohio, and age six on Robert's death),and
May Belle Brundage (age 10 on Robert's death, and living at Lebanon,
Ohio). We hope to make a connection with these long lost
relatives.
I am searching for information on Charles Duncan PERRY, b.4 Nov 1849 in Edgar Co. IL., d. 8 March 1987, Milan, Sumner Co., KS. He married Susan COLE in1876. She is also buried in Milan Cemetery. Their daughter Maude, was my Grandmother. She was born in Sumner Co. and buried in Danville Cemetery in Harper Co.
I have not been able to locate information on parents of Charles
Duncan. My aunt Lois Allton of Wellington has searched for years for
this information. Charles' mother's name was Parmelia, and he is
listed on census with Ebenezer PERRY. One census lists first 5 boys
as Heskett (including Charles) and later children as DUNCAN. They are
on the 1850 Census in Clark Co. IL with Ebenezer Perry as head of
household. I would like to unravel this mystery for my aunt. She is
in failing health and it would mean a lot to her. She has searched
for this connection for 25 years.

I've been looking for my mother's sister and brother. I finally got her sister's death certificate. No ONE in the family even knew these 2 existed. They thought I was crazy. Mom use to tell me about them and that they was buried either with her mother or grandmother in Belle Plaine. When I got Clara Elizabeth's death certificate it confirmed she is buried in Belle Plaine.
The cemetery has no record of her or her brother, Roy Johnson. Clara died March 27, l913. She was 2 months old and was in St. Luke's Hospital, where she had been for all but one week of her life. She died of Inanition, which I found out was malnution or starvation. This, I think, is a genetic problem coming down thru the family line (due to an allergy to all milks and asthma developed at a early age) as it has happened to numerous children in the family.
Roy died on July 10, l909 (from my grandmother's death book). We found a empty spot at the cemetery between our great-grandparents, but don't know if the kids are there or with their mother. There is no stone.
Thanks for whatever you can do.
DE VORE
11/2/96
DeVore Family, City of Caldwell, Sumner County 1870s-1920s & later. I am looking for information on the DeVore Family who resided in Caldwell from the 1870s until at least the 1920s. My great great great grandfather Benjamin DeVore resided in Caldwell with his son, Harvey Jackson DeVore and his family. I would naturally like to know as much as possible about these relatives and their descendants. One of the main things I need to know is exactly when Benjamin DeVore died. He was still alive at the age of 82 in the 1880 Census. All of these DeVores, to the best of my knowledge, are buried in the DeVore Cemetery near Bluff City in Harper County. Also, if anyone could tell me whether it would be possible to obtain a copy of Benjamin's death certificate from Sumner County and how I could go about it, that would also be very much appreciated.
Thanks
