2011 - Fall Newsletter - 2011

Parker Community Historical Society hopes you've had a super spring and summer; have been able to spend quality time with friends, neighbors, and members of the Parker community. The annual meeting will be held in November at the new Museum. Election of officers; your participation and voice would surely be welcomed. Our meetings are on the 3rd Tuesday, November through April, and begin at 7:00 pm. May through October, begin at 7:30 pm. Work days are the 1st and 3rd Tuesday mornings starting at 8:30; all help is most welcome. We look forward to having you join us. The museums are operated for your community…We encourage all in the community to participate by joining hands with us and getting involved with the most tender loving care needed that you can give.

Please stop by and check out the newly acquired items on display. There is a special 1906 quilt on the bed that you should see!! :) We do accept donations you would like to share with the community; also memorials and donations in memory of community members; their names are noted on a memorial plaque in the museum.

A 'special thank you to Doris Satchell', who organized our refreshment booth for the Parker Harvest Fest, now known as Parker Days; also a "big thank you, to all who helped".

Your schoolhouse was used for a community display of Parker Charity quilts made by local quilters; this group has a membership of about twenty five (25) local ladies. The quilts project was started to provide quilts for the Parker Fire Department to have available to take to accidents or fires. The group accepts donations of fabric/thread/backing mat/batting and crochet thread used to tie the quilts. Contact persons: Phyllis @913-898-3368 or Carolyn @ 913-898-4861. The group hopes to use the school-house again next year to show some of their projects completed.

Parker Genealogy: They meet the 1st Tuesday of each month at 1:30pm; check out their website for listings of items available to help in projects you might have going that they may be able to provide the answers too. The group is looking for old school pictures, also town pictures to use in a 2nd edition booklet, your originals can be returned. Also, they have a few pictures that perhaps you could help in identifying where taken and who are in the photo. Be sure and check out the 1st edition booklet. There should be some available at the museum or you can order from their website.

Annual membership dues for November 1, 2011 through October 31, 2012 are now due. Single membership only $5 each per year and each lifetime membership $50. What a bargain, "please join us". The museums are open to visitor's alumni weekend, during Parker Days, and will be opened by special request. Persons to contact regarding the museums are: Marilyn Rhoades, 913-898-6891; Janice Stahl, 913-898-6662; John Riggs, 913-898-2337; or Barbara Hines, 913-898-2189.
