Greetings from your Parker Community Historical Society, we're proud of our accomplishments in the past year, new sidewalks to all museum buildings and a handicap entrance to museum building #2. The new sidewalks certainly made a great improvement to the south side of Main Street in our town. We work (whoever can) at the museums each month on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday's. It was decided to work in the afternoons from 1-3 p.m. through the month of April and back to 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. from May through October. Our monthly meetings are held on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at the new museum. Meetings start at 7 p.m. November through April and 7:30 p.m. the months of May through October. We encourage all who can, join us and participate when possible. We have opened the museums for "away families" to brows thru; they enjoyed their time spent and were amazed at the amount of info and family pictures we had to offer. We make these facilities available to all who will contact us and make arraignments; please contact John Riggs, President (913-898-2337); Marilyn Rhoades, Treasurer (913-898-6891); or Barb Hines, Secretary (913-898-2189). Also, as a reminder please check out our website, lots of pictures and memories. We have a Memorial Plaque, which will be on display at the museum and at the banquet; you may designate a memorial donation. We accept donations as memorials to those no longer with us, memorials have been received for Helen Haverfield, Joe Cantrell, J.B. Gregory, Glenn Merrill, Dale and Mildred Lemon, an acknowledgement will be sent to the families. If you will not be attending the banquet and wish, you may mail your memorial donation to our PO Box 173. "To live in the hearts we leave behind is not to die"
We do have a sad tail to share with you, the Blacksmith Shop, which we had hoped to restore has numerous problems. We have lived with our hearts instead of our heads when looking at the Blacksmith Shop, not only does the roof need a lot of extra support, the saddest news; the walls are crumbling. We have two alternatives: 1) Tear out and replace the walls or... 2) Raze the shop and try to replace it with another building to house the blacksmith tools and forge. Either alternative takes considerably more money than we presently have. If your membership dues have not been paid for the fiscal year November 1, 2009 through October 31, 2010, they are due. Dues have not increased and still are a great bargain at $5 for single members and each lifetime membership $50. We don't wish to raise our dues, but if you can see in your heart to help out and give a donation for the continuing operation of your museums, it would be greatly appreciated. There was a food booth at the Parker Harvest fest that brought in additional funds...Thanks, to Carl White, family & friends who took on the endeavor.
OUR FUND RAISER: We have a quilt that we will be raffling on Parker Harvest Fest day this fall. YOU MUST SEE TO BELIEVE! It will be on display at the museums on Alumni Saturday. The blocks all picture Parker at various stages of development. Phyllis (Nickell) Mundell created the quilt and Jean (Keitel) Nickel finished it. Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5. You may send an order for tickets to Marilyn (Hampton) Rhoades @20334 Gireau Road, Parker, KS 66072 or purchase from members Marilyn, John & Osee (White) Riggs, Barb Hines, Janice (Cady) Stahl, Shirley (Quisenberry) Osborn and Glenn Kerr.
