2009 - Spring Newsletter - 2009

On November 18, 2008 the Annual Meeting of the Parker Community Historical Society Board of Directors was held at the New Museum, 207 W. Main, Parker, Kansas. Board of Directors' members are Helen Haverfield, Society Vice-President; Osee Riggs, Society Recorder; Shirley Osborn, Society Reporter; Wayne Osborn, Kenneth Prentice; Charles Hampton, Sr., plus Society officers are John Riggs, President; Marilyn Rhoades, Treasurer; and Barbara Hines, Secretary. Building Committee consisting of Glenn Kerr, Shirley Osborn, Janice Stahl, Marilyn Rhoades and John Riggs was re-appointed by the President.

We work (whoever can) at the museums each month on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday's. It was decided to work in the afternoons from 1-3 p.m. through the month of April and back to 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. from May through October. Our monthly meetings are held on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at the new museum. Meetings start at 7 p.m. November through April and 7:30 p.m. the months of May through October. We encourage all who can, join us and participate when possible.

If your membership dues have not been paid for the fiscal year November 1, 2008 through October 31, 2009, they are due. Dues have not increased and still are a great bargain at $5 for single members and each lifetime membership $50.

PCHS is planning for the Parker Rural High School Alumni Banquet, which is April 25th at 6.p.m. The MUSEUMS will be open from 1:00 p.m-4:00 p.m. to all visitors. Please come by and visit with family and friends...reminisce and recollect a story or two of the good old times and share it with everyone. The elementary school will open at 4 p.m. preceding the banquet. We also have a Memorial Plaque, which will be on display at the museum and at the banquet; you may designate a memorial donation. We are still accepting donations for Joe Cantrell. If you will not be attending the banquet you may mail your donations to our PO Box 173.

The MUSEUMS may also be opened by special request by contacting John Riggs, President (913-898-2337); Marilyn Rhoades, Treasurer (913-898-6891); or Barb Hines, Secretary (913-898-2189). Also, as a reminder please check out our website, lots of pictures and memories.

Our un-welcomed guests (termites) are no longer present, all the buildings were treated by Coryell Exterminators, this put quite a dent in our operation funds, Thank you to all who donated. The Black Smith shop is still a work in progress; we need to put a support beam under the replaced roof. Also, we still owe a balance of $2,000 to one of our members who paid on those roof repairs.

Please continue to advise us of any change of address that occurs between newsletters. Getting corrected addresses from the post office is expensive and delays receipt of the mail. Continue to notify Marilyn (Hampton) Rhoades @913-898-6891 or Janice (Cady) Stahl @913-898-6662 of address corrections and names and dates of deceased alumni and members.

The Alumni Association is again accepting scholarships applications. Eligibility is open to anyone who is related to a PRHS graduate and is a high school senior or returning college student. Applications may be obtained from Janice (Cady) Stahl @913-898-6662, E-mail: [email protected], or Steve Kinder @913-898-6465, E-mail: [email protected]. Applications must be returned by April 1st.

Following is a list of deceased PRHS Alumni since the Spring Newsletter 2008. Each one is missed by family, friends, classmates and fellow alumni. If you are aware of anyone missed please let us know.
