The Parker Rural High School reunion will be held on May 16, 1998. We will make arrangements to have the museum open as usual. If anyone comes early or leaves late and wishes to visit the museum when it is not otherwise open, please feel free to call one of the officers listed on the plaque that is in the museum window. Sorry the old blacksmith shop and the school house are not yet ready for visitors.
The PRHS scholarships will be offered again this year. We have been told by the PRHS board that the usual $200.00 award will be given to a female and male student. Please submit your application with a writeup of why you think that person should be granted the scholarship. These applications should be sent to Kenneth Wells, President of PRHS, RR #1, Box 67, Parker, Ks 66072. The deadline for receipt of applications will be May 2, 1998.
Attention: The Board of Directors of PCHS has agreed that it will discontinue remailing newsletters returned because of a change of address. This has become a very expensive item, so if you move, have a change in rural route, or street number etc, please advise us as soon as possible.
As reported in the fall newsletter, we now have furniture for the old school. Dwight Gorrell and Ruth Burcham Gorrell have donated and delivered some slate blackboards for the school. We have some other blackboards that have been located also. We are anxious to get this school project completed and are excited about its potential attraction.
Two very special meetings were held at the museum. We reported in the fall newsletter that we received the Kansas Flag from Senator Tysons office on October 21, 1997. We were presented the United States Flag from U. S. Senator Sam Brownback's office on March 17, 1998. Senator Brownback could not attend but his State Director, Anne Emerson, was here to present the flag. Forty two people attended that special meeting.
Donations since the fall newsletter include a World War I artillery shell along with three World War I pictures, A 1997 photo of the 1943 PRHS basket bail team standing in the same positions as they were in the 1943 photograph, a World War II scrapbook, several pictures including an early photo of the Parker depot and a thrashing machine level used in the 1930's and early 1940's. We also acquired several programs of the PRHS banquets. We think these would make a nice display if more could be found. We especially need those from the 1970's and before. If you should have some of these and wish to donate them. please mail to Glenn Merrill, RR #1, Box 78, Parker, Ks 66072.
Two dilapidated buildings at the back of the museum lots have been taken down. This has improved the appearance of the grounds and removed the danger to children playing in the neighborhood.
