1998 - Fall Newsletter - 1998

The annual meeting of the Parker Community Historical Society will be held at 7:30 PM on November 17. 1998. The meeting is held at 207 W. Main, Parker, Kansas. Election of all officers will be held and your attendance and participation is encouraged and welcome.

Dues for 1998, if not paid, may be paid at this time. A single yearly membership is $2.50, a married couple Yearly membership is $4.00 and a life time membership is available for $35.00 per person. All dues should be sent to treasurer Cheryl Erwin, Rt 1, Parker, Ks 66072.

We wish to remind all persons to send their change of address (if any) to Cheryl Erwin at the above address. This is particularly true for those who have new addresses because of the installation of the 911 service.

Jean Nickell, who was in charge of the memorial service at the annual PRHS banquet has asked us to include the following in this newsletter: "Dear Graduates: I want to express my apologies for the errors in the listing of this years deceased members on your programs at our banquet. I thought the errors had been corrected until I started reading them. Please make these corrections in your lists: Willis Troutman died on january 4, 1998: Kathryn Lalman Stahl; Glen Obermeier died on january 4. 1997; Joyce Jennings Sims graduated in 1952.
My thanks to those who brought our attention to these errors and to those who took the time to make corrections or additions to the listing of all the graduates that was posted in the lobby. I hope to get the death dates to all the graduates with your help and will make them available to each of you soon." Jean Nickell, 40095 Plum Creek Road, Parker, Ks 66072, telephone 913-755-4309.

The Society held a bake sale during Parker Day and we all considered it a success. Thanks to every person who donated items for the sale and to Cheryl, Helen Haverfield, Jaunita Holderman, Nadine Boydston, and Marilyn Rhoades for their help during the day. John and Osee Riggs brought in a picnic table, for anyone who desired to use during the day. Thanks John and Osee.

At one of the meetings, the idea of keeping the museum open for a few hours on each Saturday and Sunday from about April through October was discussed. Some from outside the organization have mentioned that this would be a nice thing to do. The PCHS board agreed 100% but also felt that it will take a lot of volunteer help in order to do so. If anyone wishes to offer to sit for a few of these periods, please contact James Wilson, President, Parker, KS 66072.

The following donations since our last newsletter are noted. Slate blackboarls (special thanks to Jim and Jean Ptacek and to Dwight Gorrell), a 1920's swimsuit, some Parker High "Panther Press" news bulletins, an article (including picture) from the Mound City newspaper featuring the PRHS undefeated faatball team of 1949, an old time "chicken catcher", old grade and high school textbooks, some early Parker town pictures, a picture of those in the Senior class play of 1930. This was very nice because every person in the picture was identified. If any donation is missed, please accept our apology.

Do you have any PRHS banquet invitations and programs? We need 1970's and prior years to that and most of the 1980's. If you have any of these and wish to donate them, send to Glenn Merrill, RR1, Box 78, Parker, Ks 66072.

Have a nice Thanksgiving and a merry Christmas. Plan to attend the November meeting if at all possible.
