1997 - Spring Newsletter - 1997

The annual meeting of the Parker Community Historical Society was held on November 19, 1996. Election of officers was held. Those elected were President, James Wilson, Vice President, Helen Haverfield, Treasurer, Cheryl Erwin, and Secretary, Glenn Merrill. Osee Riqqs will continue as the society record keeper and recorder. Yearly dues for 1997 will remain the same: $2.50 for a single membership, $4.00 for married couple and a lifetime membership is $35.00 per person. Our present lifetime membership is 191. 1997 dues are now payable unless previously mailed.

The Parker Rural High School reunion will be on May 17. 1997 and Parker Day is scheduled for September 6, 1997. Anyone who is interested in the Parker Day Parade or other Parker Day activities is asked to contact Gerry Ross, Box 36A, Parker, Ks 66072.

Attention: any McCarty, Trigg, Shattuck, Crisler, and Tompkins or anyone knowing of these families - a family history is being compiled of early Linn County settlers, Nathaniel McCarty and his sister Mahala McCarty Trigg. Pat Nelson, daughter of Carl Jones, a 1930 graduate of PRHS is doing this research and wishes to hear from you. Her address is P.O.Box 5301, Central Point, Or 97502. Her telephone number is 514-664-4588.

Cheryl Erwin, our treasurer, does an excellent job of keeping an up to date record of deceased PRHS alumni and PCHS members. Please help in keeping her informed of any of these deaths, especially those of you who live away from the Parker area. She is also anxious to receive obituaries whenever possible. Help Cheryl in keeping this important information. Also we would like to remind everyone to let Cheryl know when you move. We need this so we can continue to send the newsletter and to keep PRHS and PCHS records up to date. It costs 32 cents for a returned newsletter plus another 32 cents to resend it. This is in addition to the original bulk postage. Thanks for your help on the above two items.

The PCHS board has voted to participate in the city wide garage sale when it is scheduled. We are doing this as a money raising project. We do not have the date of the sale at the present time, but if you can donate items for the sale, please contact Cheryl Erwin at 898-6891.

We have received several nice donations since the fall newsletter. Among these are old Parker Messages, an advertising piece from the Iiigram Brothers Feed and Livery located in Parker (this item is not dated but we know it's old), historic study books from a closed Linn County grade school, a 1936 kitchen table, an old kitchen stove, Dr. George N. Vail (Parker Medical Doctor) pamphlet, a history book of the Parker Methodist Church and an interesting Kansas Centennial flyer.

We are hoping to get a lot of work done on the old school building east of the museum during 1997. We are in need of all the items that were used in old one room country grade schools, sudh as blackboards, erasers, desks, stoves, etc. Help if you can!

We want to develop in the museum a doctors corner. This would include medical doctors such as Barrett. Cowan, Warner, Spafford, and Vail, Dentist Kehl, and veterinarian Ruble. If you know of others please let us know. We want pictures, newspaper articles, and other matters of interest. Thanks a lot.

Each year we try to report on all deaths of PRHS Alumni and all PCHS members. Since our last report we have been notified of the deaths of the following:
