Obituary.

Died, Friday, Oct. 5th, at the residence of her son-in-law, Ralph Middleton, Mrs. Salisbury, aged seventy-two years.

This aged lady, after more than the allotted three score years and ten of life, passed quietly and peacefully into the great hereafter. She was born in Northumberland, England, and came to this country in 1886. She has lived, since her arrival here, with her daughter Mrs. Ralph .Middleton, and seemed entirely happy in the company of her child and family. Slowly she has been sinking in strength for some months, and at the time mentioned, fell asleep to wake no more. The natural weakening of life's hold, old age, was the only cause of her demise. An Aged Resident of Chapman Killed by the Cars.

Chapman, Kas, Nov. 6.: This morning about 8 o'clock an extra stock train, east bound, while passing through this city, ran over and instantly killed John Shannon, an old gentleman and a long time resident of Chapman. The train was running at the rate of thirty or forty miles per hour and it is supposed that the gentleman attempted to cross the track in front of it. The matter has created great excitement and measures will be taken to secure justice, as the train was obviously violating the law in regard to the rate of running through cities.(Abilene Reflector, Nov. 8, 1888)

Charlie Simmers died early Wednesday morning. He rested easy Tuesday night and it was thought he was better, but while the family were at breakfast he called his mother to him and said: "Mother, I believe I am dying; kiss me." And the mother's tender caress seemed to gently release the soul from its mortal environment and start it, hallowed and sanctified, on its upward journey to heaven and rest. The young man's death will not only be mourned by his immediate family, but will be the cause of sorrow to many friends; and all of Charlie's acquaintances were his friends. He was in the 33d year of his age and died of a pulmonary disease of long standing. The funeral services will be held to-morrow afternoon at two o'clock. (Abilene Reflector 12-11-1884)

Obituary--Daniel T. Smith was born in Michigan, Dec. 14, 1842, died at Hope, Kansas, September 19, 1917, aged 74 years, 9 months and 5 days.

He joined the Co. A., 1st Indiana heavy artillery on the second call for volunteers and served four years. He tried to enlist on the first call for men but was refused. He proved a good soldier and always took pride in his army record.

He came to Kansas with the early settlers and settled northwest of Hope in 1871, on the farm he still owned at the time of his death.

After coming to Kansas he married a sister of Mrs. Charles Ryan, and to this union one child was born. It lies with its mother in the Pilgrim's Home cemetery, the mother passing to the other shore in Sept. 1888.

He later married Miss Jennie Martin, who, besides two brothers and three sisters are left to mourn the loss of a kind and loving husband and brother. The brothers and sisters are Martin and Robert of Oklahoma, Mrs. Lucy Pratt of northwest of Hope, Mrs. Chrisman of Abilene and Mrs. DeWolf of California.

He lived on his farm until a few years ago when he purchased a nice home in Hope and moved here. He was a very sociable old gentlemen and we believe he enjoyed living in this community He became a Christian in early life and was most devoted to the cause. He was a great student of the Bible and knew it almost by heart, and he greatly enjoyed arguing biblical point. His many friends called him "Uncle Dan," and as the days roll by and they do not meet him they will miss him more and more.

The burial was made in the Hope cemetery last Friday, services being held in the Presbyterian church with Rev. McLain in charge.

The Dispatch joins in mourning the loss of a kind and considerate neighbor and friend.
