John S. Fry, a Prominent Farmer of Newbern Township, Instantly Killed by Lightning During the Storm of Friday Evening.

News was brought to the city this morning of the death by a stroke of lightning of John S. Fry, a well-known farmer living about two miles north of Belle Springs.

Mr. Fry was standing in the open window up-stairs, when the severe storm that Abilene people saw pass south of the city reached his dwelling. He was watching the clouds and talking to his wife, who was in the same room. Suddenly there came a blinding sheet of electric flame and both fell to the floor, senseless. Mrs. Fry recovered after a few minutes, but her husband lay stretched silent where he had dropped. She went to him and found him breathing slightly and painfully. He did not regain consciousness, but died a short time after.

The deceased was aged about 36 years, and was a prosperous, energetic citizen. He leaves the wife and two children to mourn his departure. Death so sudden and so unexpected is peculiarly lamentable, but when it robs a happy home of an indulgent father and protector, it becomes more especially sad and enlists the sympathy of every heart for the sorrowing relatives and friends.

The gentlemen was a relative of Harvey Strickler and Clint Carden of this city.

The funeral services were held this afternoon at the residence, the interment being made in the Union Valley cemetery. (Abilene Reflector, Aug. 9, 1888)

Funnell: - Monday evening at 6:30, George Funnell passed away at his home in Clifton, after an illness of several months. George Funnell was born at Norfolk, England, June 1831, and came to the United States in 1851, and to Kansas in 1860. He took a homestead four miles east of Clifton where he lived until 1895 when he moved to Baldwin to educate his children and returned to Clifton five years ago.

He was married to Bridget Kinsley January 7, 1863, and to that union were born ten children, one daughter dying in infancy. He was one of the pioneers in everything connected with Clifton township; was its first trustee when it comprised one fourth of the county. He was a charter member of Clifton Methodist church, a devoted Christian, a man without an enemy. His long illness was cheered by the certainty of immortality, death a Christian triumph. He was a fine man and his loss is keenly felt by all who knew him, especially in his family circle where he was beloved of all.

The funeral services were held in the church he helped to build Wednesday conducted by his pastor, Rev. THos. McConnell. The sermon was preached by Rev. S.E. Betts of St. Louis, a former pastor. Interment was Sherman cemetery where his parents were buried more than thirty years ago.

Besides his wife, the surviving children are, William H., Mathew T., Geo. A., Ada of Clifton, Arthur W., of Oklahoma, James C., of Clay Center, Elizabeth A. Patterson, Jessie E. Neff, Katie B. Bennett.

Note: the date 10-21-1909 C.C. Times is penciled in at the top of the newspaper clipping.

William Henry Funnell, son of George and Bridget Kensley Funnell, was born November 15, 1863, in a one room log cabin situated 4 miles east of Clifton on Peats Creek, the oldest child of a family of nine. He had the distinction of being the first white male child born in Washington County, Kansas. He passed way (their words) Monday, April 1st, after a lingering illness, at the age of 93 years and 5 months, with his wife at his bedside.

He grew to young manhood on the home farm. On October 30th, 1889, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Patterson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Patterson, at theirhome in Clay county, thus uniting two of the pioneer families of this section. They celebrated 67 years of married life in October of 1956. Following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs Funnell lived for 21 years on their farm 5 miles northeast of Clifton. After leaving the farm they moved to Clay Center, Kansas where they owned and operated a grocery. After fourteen years they returned to Clifton to care for his aged mother. With the exception of a few years spent in Wichita, Kansas, Mr. and Mrs. Funnell lived most of their lives in and around Clifton.

When a young man, William professed his belief in Jesus Christ and hoined the church of his faith. He remained a faithful Christian all of his life and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Clifton when he died.

Although Mr. and Mrs. Funnell had no children of their own, they adopted two girls, Zella, now Mrs. Elma Burt of Boulder city, Nevada and Velma, now Mrs. Harold Volkman of Estes Park, colorado. They have four grandchildren, Vivian and Robert, children of Zella; Dick and Beth, children of Velma. They loved children and shared their home with many of their nieces and nephews who have been very kind to them and helped care for them the past months.

Besides his wife, Elizabeth, and the immediate family, he leaves to mourn his passing three sisters: Mrs. James A. Patterson of Clifton, Mrs M.M. Bennett of Ottawa, Kansas, and Mrs. George B. Neff of Tacoma, Washington. Two brothers: Mathew T. of Clifton, and Arthur of Tucson, Arizona, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

"There comes a time for all of us when we must say good-bye
But faith and hope and love and trust can never, never die;
Although the curtain falls at last
Is that a cause to grieve?
The future's fairer than the past if only we believe
and trust in God's eternal care;
So when the Master calls
Let's say that life is still more fair
although the curtain falls.

Funeral services were held at the First Presbyterian Church in Clifton, Kansas, April 4th. Rev. Carlisle Schafer was in charge with Lillian Lutz as soloist and Frank Pfister at the organ. Internment was at Sherman Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Leonard Marshall, Erald Patterson, Gene Funnell, Warren St. Pierre, Emil Marshall and Orris Marshall. Newspaper and date unknown
