Yesterday, at 11 o'clock, occurred the death of Mrs. F. L. Ball, after a lingering illness of several months, from the dread scourge, consumption.

Mrs. Ball was born in Cambridge, Illinois, April 5, 1858, and was at her death 30 years and 24 days old. Her childhood and girlhood years were spent in Cambridge, and in 1879 she married one of Abilene's most prominent citizens, F. L. Ball, and came here to live immediately after the wedding. Since that time they have been residents of the city and are well known throughout the vicinity. Two lovely daughters have been born to them. For four or five years Mrs. Ball has been unwell and for a month has not been expected to live from day to day.

Yesterday morning she passed quietly away unterrified by the the thought of death. All arrangements had been made by her for the funeral and for the disposition of trinkets, etc., to her friends.

This afternoon at 4 o'clock the funeral services were held at the home, on Cottage avenue. Rev. Dr. McKeehan preached the sermon; the interment took place in the Abilene cemetery. Mrs. Ball had hosts of firm friends who loved her not alone for her personal graces but for her noble christian character. Two sisters in Iowa and a brother in California survive her.

We extend our sympathy to the bereaved husband and motherless daughters, as do the hundreds of others in Abilene who knew and mourn the lost one. (Abilene Weekley Reflector, May 3, 1888)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For some days past the readers of the Reflector have been aware of the fact that Mrs. O. L. Ball was slowly but surely passing away, and therefore the announcement of her death at three o'clock this morning will not come upon them as a sudden shock. The warning, however will not assuage the grief of the immediate relatives and friends who so dearly loved and revered her, one of the noblest, purest and truest of christian women. For some time past she has been suffering untold agonies, the result of a cancer trouble, finally calling her death at the hour above mentioned. Through all her sufferings she has borne up with true christian fortitude, even in her deepest pain enduring with a smiling face rather than render more miserable her husband and children. To her surviving husband her decease is a sad blow. No man, in losing his wife, realizes his loss more than does whole-souled, tender-hearted Oliver Ball. To him she has been a true wife, a faithful and loving helpmeet, always at his side "through sunshine and shadow," never failing in those duties that every christian woman turns into a labor of love. Our sympathies go out chiefly to the stricken husband, for to him they are most needed, realizing as he does that he has lost one who is more than all the world to him. The surviving children who mourn the departure of the best mother on earth, are Frank L., of this cily, and Jay C, Estella, and little six year old Olive, the last three living at the family residence. The funeral services will take place from the residence, nine miles north of the city, at eleven o'clock tomorrow morning, the remains being taken to the Abilene cemetery for interment. Rev. A. Barnes, of the Universalist church in Junction City arrived in the city on this afternoon's train, and will conduct the services. The deceased was in the fifty-ninth tear of her age. She was born in Cortland county, New York, also the birth place of her husband. When nineteen years of age she married, the young couple shortly after removing to Illinois, where they resided until 1880, when they came to Kansas, locating in Abilene. Two years ago the coming June, a removal was made to the present residence. (Abilene Reflector 3-8-1888)
Miss Baumgasten, well known in Hope, where she lived several months, committed suicide at the home of a relative in Logan township, last Friday evening, by taking strychnine. Miss Baumgasten was from Pennsylvania. She had loved, but the object of her affections took a cowardly advantage of her love and accomplished her ruin. Her condition preyed so heavily upon her mind that she sought relief in death. A poor girl, without friends or money, her fate should be a warning to all who come after her and hear her sad story. The villian who caused her ruin should expiate his crime by a life-time chance of repentance in the penitentiary. (Abilene Reflector, 5-14-1885)
The Peculiarly Sad Death of Mrs. E. B. Bearce.
The old adage that "Death is no respecter of persons" was never more strikingly illustrated than when the dread destroyer entered the happy home of Mr. Frank B. Bearce and took the young wife and mother. Mrs. Bearce had not rallied since the birth of her child, Saturday, Nov. 24th, and since last Sunday morning beame seriously low, Monday night her spirit took its flight to the presence of its Creator. Mrs. Bearce was born in Plymouth, Mass., in 1863 and lived there until her marriage two years ago. She came to Kansas after her marriage with her husband and has been prominent in church and social circles ever since. Her work as an attendant of the Lutheran church has marked her as a truly christian woman. Her married life has been peculiarly happy and the blow of her death falls with crushing force upon the husband who has the heartiest of sympathy in his bereavement. Mrs. B. was a sister of L. H. Faulkner, of this city, and has one sister, Mrs. C. H. Amsden, Fremont, Ohio, who was here one year ago and will be present at the funeral. The wide circle of friends of the deceased feel keenly their loss and will miss sorely the gentle presence of the departed. Indeed, "Thou hast all seasons for thine own, O, Death!"
The babe left is doing nicely and, though motherless, seems in the best of health. The funeral services were held at the Lutheran church Thursday morning at 10 a. m., Rev. F. M. Porch officiating. The procession, which was a long one. included the Shaubenee Tribe of Red Men, of which Mr. Bearce is a respected member. The business houses of town were closed during the ceremonies. The form of the loved one was laid away to its last sleep in the Abilene cemetery. (Abilene Reflector, Dec. 6, 1888)
Died, on Tuesday morning, April 1st, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. L. H. Faulkner, Mrs. Harriet B. Bearce, wife of Mr. Z. S. Bearce. of Turner. Maine, aged 62 years. Mr. and Mrs. Bearce arrived in Abilene last September to spend the winter with their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Faulkner, expecting to return to their New England home about April 1st. Mi's. Bearce had been in feeble health for a number of years, and it was hoped by her family that a change of climate might be beneficial to her, but it proved to be otherwise; and after an illness of a few weeks she was gently and gradually overcome by "the sleep that knows no waking." There are left her husband, two sons and a daughter who feel that in the death of this patient, loving, gentle wife and mother, they have lost their dearest earthly friend. The remains, accompanied by her husband and son Frank, were taken to Turner, Maine, where burial services will be held in the Baptist church, the church of which she was a member and Which she for years adorned by her christian character and upright life. Her children arise up and call her blessed; her husband also and he praiseth her." (Abilene Reflector 4-3-1884)
Obituary
Died In Abilene, Aug. 28th at the family residence, corner Third and Mulberry streets, Anthony Berry, aged 50 years.
Mr. Berry, who was one of Abilene's most highly respected citizens, was born in County Mayo, Ireland, and spent his youth in the land of his birth.
As his children grew to manhood they removed to the "land of the free," and when he was left alone he decided that he too would come here. So four years ago he moved to Abilene where he has since made his home; he was a brother of our well known merchants J. J. and P. J. Berry, and father of two of our younger merchants, Francis and P. A. Berry. He leaves a large circle of friends and relatives to mourn his decease.
Of the direct family are the widow and seven children three sons and four daughters; of the latter, two are members of a religious order and are located at Leadville, Colorado; there are also three brothers, J. J. and P. J. Berry, of this city, and Martin Berry, of Ottawa county, and two sisters, residents of Abilene. The mourning ones have the sincere sympathy in their loss of a father and brother.
The funeral services were conducted Wednesday at the Catholic church which was filled to overflowing with friends gathered to pay the last tribute of respect to the departed one. Father J. F. Leary, assisted by visiting priests officiated at the solemn rites which the church performs over its dead. The interment was made in the Catholic cemetery where in the presence of the weeping friends; the remains were laid away to await the final resurrection. (Abilene Weekly Reflector, Aug. 30, 1888)
Gathered Home.
Wednesday morn death entered the home of J. Fred Bolster and took the little four-year-old daughter. The child was a bright, winsome being and the family can scarcely he comforted over the loss. The disease which carried her away was diphtheria, a dangerous malady to make its appearance in the city. On account of the nature of the disease it is thought best to have no public services from the house. The funeral cortege will leave the home at 10 o'clock tomorrow and a short burial service will be held at the cemetery by W. H. Zimmerman.
Mr. and Mrs. Bolster have the heartfelt sympathy of a wide circle of friends in their bereavement. We sincerely hope that no more cases of diphtheria will break out either in the family or elsewhere in the city. (Abilene Reflector, Dec. 20, 1888)
A young man named Emos Brechbill living near Buckeye was found dead in his own farm yard about seven o'clock. He had gone out to do the chores as usual and when he did not come to the house when his wife thought she should go out to see what he was doing. She found him unconscious lying on the ground. He was bleeding freely from the nose and a large lump on the back of his head gave evidence that he had suffered a heavy blow. The skin was not broken and it was impossible to tell what kind of blow he had received. It was the opinion of friends and family that the young man was murdered but there was no evidence to justify such a suspicion. Later, after a careful examination, it was determined that death was due to the kick of a cow. Emos Brechbill was a young man not yet twenty one years of age and had been married a little over a year. (Longford Leader, Oct. 30, 1913)
The death of this aged citizen of Dickinson took place after a short illness of one week, and, though the de ceased was so far advanced in life, was not expected by his family to take place for a long time to come. Mr. Brewer has been a very rugged, healthy man and one able to cope with the storms of life. He was born in Lycoming county, Pennsylvania, and lived most of his life in the Keystone State. About nine months ago he came west to live with his son, W. S. Brewer, of Banner township. A painful and fatal accident occured Friday night about four miles south of Herington by which the daughter of C. G. Brown, a well-known farmer, lost her life. Mr. Brown had been making sorghum and a large vat of the boiling syrup was standing near the barn. By some means the little one fell into the vat and was for a moment completely enveloped in the bubbling syrup. No one was near her but she managed to escape from the vat and go a short distance before losing her senses. Dr. J. W. Money, of Herington, was sent for in hot haste but was unable to save the child's life. After three hours ot pitiful suffering, the skin and flesh being cooked and bleeding, she passed away in great agony.
