Friday, Jan. 2, 1920

Amanda Knisely, 77, died at her daughter's home near Industry on Wednesday. She was a resident of that community for forty years, and is survived by five daughters. Burial was made in the Livingston Cemetery.

Milner T. Steeves, 74, died Wednesday evening at his home on North Cedar street. He is survived by a wife and four daughters. Burial was in Abilene Cemetery. [see obit below on Jan. 6]



Monday, Jan. 5, 1920

George Loyd died at the city hospital shortly before noon today. He formerly operated a grocery store on North Cedar and also was in the restaurant business. He is survived by several childen. Funeral services have not been announced, but burial will be in the Abilene Cemetery.



Tuesday, Jan. 6, 1920

Phil Barrett, Chapman, was killed last week while hauling hay at the Hickey farm there. It is believed he fell from the wagon he was driving and run over by the team.

Mrs. Alfred Brown of San Diego, California died yesterday. She was a formerlu Mrs. E. T. Ellison of this city, and the aunt of W. W. Davis. Her ashes will be returned here for burial.



Saturday, Jan. 10, 1920

Mrs. E. J. Rousseau, mother of Mrs. A. W. Rice of Abilene, died Thursday in Topeka. Her son, L. B. Rousseau died a short time ago, and her husband died in 1912. Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery near Richland, beside her husband and son.



Monday, Jan. 12, 1920

Jess Kean, 81, died yesterday evening at his home west of Abilene. He is survived by a wife and eight children. Funeral will be Tuesday afternoon from the Presbyterian church with burial in the Abilene Cemetery.



Tuesday, Jan. 13, 1920

Mary Ann Gigax, sister of Mrs. T. A. Wilson of Abilene, died at her home in Grand Junction, Colorado last night. Burial will be in Grand Junction.

Horace Litts, 90, of Brookfield, Mo., and father of Harry C. and Perry Litts of this city, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Lida Dake, in Brookfield on Jan 12. Other children who survive him are Archie D. Litts of Rialto, California and Miss Mattie Litts of Brookfield. Mr. Litts was an early settler of Abilene, coming here in 1871, and farmed and raised stock for a number of years. He was born Sept. 3, 1829 in Scranton, Pennsylvania. The body will be brought back to Abilene to be buried by the side of his wife, who died 40 years ago.



Thursday, Jan. 15, 1920

John E. Van Horn, 79, died Tuesday night at his home in Garfield township. He is survived by his wife and several children. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery

W. F. Hartenstein, 47, died last night at his home south of Industry. He was involved in a runaway a few days ago and was thrown from his wagon. His injuries developed into blood poisoning and lockjaw, which led to his death. He is survived by a wife and three children. Burial will be in Enterprise Cemetery.



Monday, Jan. 19, 1920

Mrs. J. R. Grimsley, sister of C. S. Crawford of this city, died at her home in Davenport, Iowa last night. Burial will be in the family plot in Vinton, Iowa.



Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1920

George Washington Straight, 64, died early this morning at his home on South Cedar street. He was born Oct. 8, 1855 in Peoria, Illinois; married Hiley E. Napier at Modale, Iowa on Dec. 16, 1877. He is survived by a wife, three sons and one daughter; also a brother a two sisters. A son preceded him in death. Burial will be in the Abilene Cemetery on Thursday.



Jan. 27, 1920

Charles A. Wilbur, 62, died this morning at his home near Manchester. He leaves a wife and little daughter. Funeral will be Wednesday afternoon at the Keystone chapel.



Friday, Jan. 30, 1920

Mrs. George Livingston, 79, died yesterday evening at her home on East Seventh street. Mr. Livingston died two years ago, and this family was one of the most prominent of the early settlers. Burial will be at the cemetery northeast of Abilene that bears the family name. Several children survive. [see obit below, on Feb. 4]



Saturday, Jan. 31, 1920

Paul Schlegel was called to Los Angeles by the death of his father, L. Schlegel. The deceeased was was of the pioneer settlers of Dickinson county, coming from Wisconsin in the early '60's and locating on a farm on Turkey creek. He built the second mill in the county, operating it for 30 years. He moved to California three years ago, and after the death of his second wife, made his home with his daughter. He leaves seven children to mourn his death.



Monday, Feb. 2, 1920

Fred Gault, former linotype operator for the Daily Reflector, died this morning at Denver, Colorado where he had been taking treatments for tuberculosis. The body will be brought back to Abilene for burial.

Lowry Jones died Saturday night at the home of his son-in-law, C. B. Zook, at Topeka. He was born August 6, 1841 in Alabama, spent his childhood in Tennessee and grew to manhood in Illinois. He married Catherine Brown in 1860, and Mr. Jones homesteaded in Dickinson County in 1870. His wife died in 1898 and since that time had spent most of his life at the Soldiers' Home in Leavenworth. He is survived by two children, Mrs. Zook and Harry L. Jones of Chelsea, Oklahoma. The body was brought back to Abilene and will be buried in the cemetery here tomorrow.



Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1920

Former Abilene resident Mrs. Amanda Slater died at her home in McGill, Nevada on Saturday night. She is survived by her husband, Arthur Slater, and two sons. She is also survived by her father, H. P. Raney, and two sisters, all of Abilene. The body has been brought to Abilene for burial, and will be interred in the Abilene Cemetery tomorrow.



Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1920

Mrs. Joe S. Lamb died at Laramie, Wyoming on Monday night. She and her husband were traveling to California when she became ill and had to be removed from the train at Laramie. She was the daughter of Mrs. E. S. Peterson of this city. Besides her husband and mother, she is survived by her brothers and sisters. The body was brought back to this county for burial in the Prairiedale Cemetery tomorrow.

Monday, Feb. 9, 1920

George H. DeVoe died yesterday evening at his home on Vine street after suffering a blot clot caused by the breaking of his leg last week. A wife and three daughters survive. Burial will be in the Abilene Cemetery.



Tuesday, Feb. 10, 1920

George R. Peck died this morning after suffering an epileptic seizure while working at the National Hotel. He was a painter and paperhanger, and is survived by a wife and three children. Burial will be Thursday in the Abilene Cemetery. [see obit below on Feb. 13]

Wilson Bender, 23, died at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John F. Bender of near Longford. [see obit below on Feb. 18]

Mrs. Sarah Lehman, 83, died yesterday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. R. R. Issitt, on North Olive street.

Monday, Feb. 16, 1920

Orval Hoffman, three year old child of Mr. and Mrs. Christ. Hoffman, died at the family home on South Buckeye yesterday morning of pneumonia. Services and burial will be at the New Basel Cemetery tomorrow afternoon.

Harry Sidesinger, 13 year of son of Mr. and Mrs. John Sidesinger, died yesterday at the family home at 1100 North Cedar of pneumonia. He was born Nov. 14, 1906 in Sheridan County, and was an honor student at Abilene Junior High School. He is survived by his parents, and two brothers, Earl and Clarence. Burial will be tomorrow in the Abilene Cemetery.

Noah H. Engle, 86, died early this morning at his home, 618 North West Fourth street. He came to this county from Pennsylvania in 1879, and is the father of our police chief, H. G. Engle. Funeral services will be Sunday afternoon from the family home with burial in Newbern Cemetery.

Friday, Feb. 20, 1920

Harry D. Baldwin, six month old son of Mr. and Mrs. William Baldwin, died at the home on North Buckeye yesterday morning. Services and burial today.

Henry G. DeVoe, 90, died yesterday evening at the family home, 808 North Vine. Burial will be tomorrow in the Abilene Cemetery. His son, George, died just last week.



Saturday, Feb. 21, 1920

Rosa A. Mizener, 77, died yesterday evening at the family home, 1315 North West Second after a lingering illness. She was the wife of James W. Mizener and the mother of several children. Services will be tomorrow from the home, with burial in Abilene Cemetery. [see obit below on Feb. 24]



Monday, Feb. 23, 1920

John P. Fishburn, 67, died Saturday night at his residence, 306 East Sixth street, from pneumonia and pleurisy. Mrs. Fishburn was not here, being in Toronto, Canada caring for a sick daughter.

Alexander Knight, 81, died at his home on South west Second early Sunday morning. He is survived by a wife and seven children. Services will be tomorrow from the home and burial will be in the Abilene Cemetery. [see obit below on Feb. 24]

Mrs. M. J. Sullivan, 85, died yesterday at the St. Joseph's convent. The body will be taken to Topeka for interment.

Hannah Wilson, 80, died yesterday at the family home near Industry. Burial in Bethel Cemetery. [see obit below on March 9]



Friday, Feb. 27, 1920

Therone Thurwood Bowersox, aged 1 year, died yesterday morning at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. V. O. Bowersox, on Vine street. Services will be held from the home Sunday afternoon, with burial in the Abilene Cemetery.

John Lexow, 80, died at the National Hotel early this morning. He had resided in Hayes township for many years. Burial Sunday afternoon in the Bethel Cemetery.

Julia A. Jackson, 86, died at the Catholic orphanage this morning. The body is being shipped to Hoxie, her former home, in charge of Mrs. Edwin Hill

Cynthia Ardella Moyer, 32, wife of J. H. Moyer, died yesterday evening. Services will be Monday from the home, and the body will be taken to Junction City, with burial in Highland Cemetery. [see obit below on March 5]

Mary Margaret Scriven, 70, died this morning at her home on South Buckeye. Burial will be Tuesday in the Abilene Cemetery. [see obit below on March 1]

Friday, March 5, 1920

Robert Foote died at his home northwest of Longford on Monday. He had suffered a stroke of paralysis.

Mrs. Catherine A. Courtney, 76, widow of Robert Courtney, died the home of her daughter, Mrs. George Etherington this morning. She is also survived by two sons, both living out of state. Burial will be Abilene Cemetery on Sunday.

Saturday, March 6, 1920

Alice McAdams, 14, died yesterday evening at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. G. McAdams, 109 South Buckeye. Burial will be tomorrow at the city cemetery in Newton.

Mrs. Eliza Devlin, age 92 died last night at the county hospital. The body was taken to Carlton, where her relatives reside.

George Tischouser, 35, died of pneumonia at his home north of Elmo this morning. He is survived by a wife and three children.

Carl Siedler, 69, died at his home Wednesday afternoon after an illness of nearly a year. He leaves a wife, son and five daughters, all grown. Services were held this afternoon at the M.E. church, Enterprise.



Monday, March 15, 1920

Mrs. Jay Harding, 59, died Saturday night at the family home 310 East Enterprise street. She had been an Abilene resident for the last 35 years. She is survived by her husband, son Harry and daughter Mrs. Cecil Brooks all of this city. Burial will be tomorrow in the Abilene Cemetery. [see obit below on March 19]

Former Abilene resident Harry Sorber died Saturday at Pratt of heart trouble. He married an Abilene girl, Miss Ethel Darrow, a sister of Mrs. Tom Hogan. The family also lived in Solomon for a number of years. He is survived by his wife and one son. Burial was Sunday in Pratt.

Miss Nellie S. Mitchner died this morning at her home, 1215 North Buckeye. She is survived by her parents and a brother of St. Louis. Interment will be Monday in Newton, Kansas. [see obit below on March 26]

Ralph Hutchinson, 8 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. William Hutchinson, died at the family home in San Francisco, California, of diphtheria. William Hutchinson was a former resident of this city, and a brother to Chester Hutchinson of this place.

Mrs. Emily R. Bowers, 64, wife of F. E. Bowers, died of cancer yesterday morning at the family residence on West First. The family moved here from Salina ten days ago, and burial will be in that city.

Jack Coulson, 79, pioneer homesteader of Dickinson county, died yesterday evening at his home on North Olive after a lingering illness. He located on a place north of Abilene 43 years ago, and is survived by three sons. Burial tomorrow in Abilene Cemetery.

James Dunlop, 75, died at his home in Detroit Saturday morning. Born in Scotland, he was one of the prominent settlers of this county. Services were held from the home this afternoon, with burial in the Bethel Cemetery.

Fanny Hoffman Fuller, 44, died last night at the home of her mother, Mrs. Fanny Hoffman, 211 North East Sixth street. She had been a missionary to India for twenty-one years, and had come to live at her mother's house a year ago on account of poor health. She is survived by her mother, her husband, Marcus B. Fuller, a daughter, three brothers and seven sisters. Burial tomorrow in the Abilene Cemetery.

Wilma, the 2 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Richardson, died yesterday at the family home near Solomon.

Samuel Bennison, 55, died yesterday evening at his home north of Buckeye. He was born in Shellsburg, Wisconsin on Aug. 20, 1864, came to Kansas and married Elizabeth Akers Dec. 3, 1889 in Abilene. He is survived by his wife and two children, Mrs. Ray Livingston and Harold Bennison; also two sisters and two brothers in Illinois. Services will be Friday with burial in the Abilene Cemetery

Dale Ernest Nottorf, grandson of F. E. Nottorf of Carlton, was killed instantly Sunday morning when hit by a train near his home in Lewiston, Montana. The boy's father, Milton B. Nottorf, saw the child on the tracks and tried to rescue him, but could not reach him in time.

Levi Taylor, 87, who settled in Dickinson county forty years ago, died yesterday evening at his home south of Abilene. He is survived by four sons and two daughters. [see obit below on April 9]

Mrs. Melvina Hutchins, 78, died Friday morning at the home of her son in Cawker City. She was a former resident of Abilene, the daughter of David Metizer and the grandmother of Paul Nicolay. She is also survived by several sisters and brothers. She will be brought here for burial in the Abilene Cemetery.

Carlton--The four year old daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Linbeck died last Tuesday evening. The child was taken to Herington for burial.

J. H. Kohman, 66, died early this morning in Los Angeles, California. He had been visiting in that city and became dangerously ill at Christmas. He is survived by his wife, five sons and two daughters. The body will be shipped to Abilene for burial in the city cemetery. [see obit below on April 21]

Industry news--John Bush, one of Dickinson county's oldest settlers, died at the home of A. H. Ryon on Thursday. Burial was Sunday in Greenridge Cemetery.

Industry news--Susie Hacker, formerly Miss Everetts, died at her home in Newton on Friday. Funeral services and burial were Sunday in Greenridge Cemetery.

Mrs. Elizabeth Prichard, 82, died early this morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. D. Shepherd, on East Enterprise street. She was born April 24, 1837 in Ontario, Canada. The widow of Ruffies D. Pritchard, she is survived by Mrs. Shepherd and a son, Harvey Pritchard of Athol, Kansas. She was also preceded in death by a daughter and a son. The body will be taken to Smith Center to be buried beside her husband, who died in 1911.

Mrs. Gula Jennie Stoner, 21, died suddenly yesterday morning at the family home in North Dickinson. She married Abram Stoner were married September 17, 1919. She was born Feb. 21, 1899 in Dickinson county to Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Coulson. Her mother preceded her in death by one year and four months. She is also survived by her sisters, Velma and Grace. Burial was today in the Abilene Cemetery.

Mrs. Edith Noel died early this morning at the family home seven miles north of Abilene. Her husband, Abram Noel and two small sons survive.

Former Abilene resident Mrs. Melvin Henne, 22, died yesterday at the family home in Gypsum City. She leaves a husband and week old daughter; also two other children by her first marriage to the late Roy Brown.

Josephine Murphy died April 19 at the home of her father, William Murphy, near Hope. She had been ill for over a year with tuberculosis. She was born Aprill 24, 1884 in Ontario, Canada. Miss Murphy is survived by her father and one sister, Mrs. Rosella Hart of Craig, Colorado. She was buried in the German Baptist cemetery next to her mother, sister and brother.

Judge J. C. Porter died today at his home on North Spruce after suffering a stroke of apoplexy last Friday. He was 80 years old and had spent half his life in Abilene. He served as police judge here for 20 years, and was a member of the G.A.R. and other worthy organizations. Services with be Thursday from the Methodist church, with burial in Abilene Cemetery.



Monday, May 3, 1920

Thaddeus Mitchner departed this life Friday, April 30th after a lingering illness. He was born near Lafayette, Indiana on Nov. 4, 1848. In 1879 he moved to Newton, where he was in business until 1901, when he removed to Abilene. He leaves a wife, Dorcas C., and a son, William F., of St. Louis.



Wednesday, May 5, 1920

Edgar T. Motley died Monday in Kansas City of heart failure. He was a son in law of Mr. and Mrs. A. S. Brenizer of this city, and was a traveling salesman for the American Tobacco Company. The body was returned here for burial in the Abilene Cemetery this afternoon.



Thursday, May 6, 1920

Mrs. Charles Flemming of Fort Scott, formerly Miss Kathryn Lewis of this city, died Tuesday of peritonitis at a Kansas City hospital. She had moved to Fort Scott with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Lewis about two years ago, and was married last January to Mr. Flemming. Burial will be in Fort Scott.

Mrs. S. H. Gugler died this morning at her home in Woodbine.

Boyce Harper, 19, of Salina, was killed Saturday night when the car he was driving went into a ditch two miles west of Abilene and turned over, pinning him underneath.



Tuesday, May 11, 1920

Manchester news: Relatives received the sad news of the death of Clayton Stottler, Jr. at San Juan, Texas. The little child was taken with bowel trouble and his little life of one year was soon closed.



Wednesday, May 12, 1920

William Shane, 64, died yesterday evening at his home at 201 South Third street, after a week's illness of paralysis. He had been manager of the Badger Lumber Company in Abilene for many years. His is survived by his wife, three daughters and two brothers. Services will be tomorrow from the Presbyterian church, with burial in the Abilene Cemetery.

Mrs. Elizabeth Sterl, mother of William and Oscar Sterl, died at her home on Vine street on May 12. The body will be taken to Rutland, Vermont, for burial. [see obit below on May 14]



Friday, May 14, 1920

Funeral services for Mrs. Fred Dodson were held this afternoon from the Methodist church, with burial in the Abilene Cemetery. She died after a short illness. She was recently reunited with her husband after a divorce lasting several years. Their second marriage occurred in Chicago earlier this year.

Manchester news: Several relatives from out of town attended the funeral of Agnes Gaurith. The body was taken to Minneapolis for burial.

Mrs. Lizzy Haney, 64, died at her home in Hollard yesterday afternoon from a stroke of paralysis. Her husband died a year ago, and she is survived by two daughters and one son. Funeral tomorrow at the Holland church, with burial in the Holland Cemetery.



Friday, May 21, 1920

John Cryderman, a former resident of Solomon and a brother to George Cryderman of that town, died Wednesday in Topeka. He had undergone an operaton last week and was reported to be recovering.

The funeral of Lois Langston, 49, was held Tuesday afternoon in Topeka, with burial in Mount Auburn cemetery there. She was the daughter of Mrs. W. T. Langston, and the sister of Mrs. E. F. Davis and Elmer Langston of Abilene.



Monday, May 24, 1920

Mrs. Cardelia Skeels, 63, died at her home in Abilene this afternoon. She is survived by two daughters and one brother, Harrison Maxidon. Burial will be in the Enterprise Cemetery.

Ronald J. Mooney, 22, of Ada, died at Manchester on Sunday morning, of a heart attack. Burial will be in Minneapolis

James N. Blaine, 73, died at his home, 216 South East Second street, this morning. He is survived by his wife, one daughter and one son. Burial will be in the Abilene Cemetery.

John S. Boyce, 79, died at his daughter's home in Horton, Kansas early Saturday. He was an old settler of this county. Burial was held yesterday at the Abilene Cemetery.



Tuesday, June 1, 1920

M. V. Burkett died in Bethany hospital in Kansas City, Kansas early Saturday morning. Injured in a train accident, he died on the operating table. He was born 32 years ago Feb. 6 last. A former resident of Herington, he is survived by a wife and four year old son.

Michael Webb, 75, died suddenly at his home in Talmage yesterday afternoon. He had lived in that community for over 40 years. Survivors include his wife and several other relatives. Burial Talmage Cemetery.

Mrs. Kate Hansen, wife of Peter Hansen, died at the family home on South Second street early this morning. She is survived by the husband and three sons, including Carl, who is in the army hospital at Ft. Sheridan, Illinois, recovering from wounds received in the great war. Funeral will be Sunday from the home, with burial in Abilene Cemetery.



Thursday, June 2, 1920

Francis Robinson, 99, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Thomas Lacey, in Manchester, this morning. He had lived in Dickinson county for fifty years. He is survived by two daughters and one son. Burial will be Sunday morning in the Athelstane Cemetery, Clay county.

K. F. Bremer died late Tuesday afternoon when the team of horses he was driving backed a mowing machine over his body. Death was almost instantaneous. Services will be held in Woodbine tomorrow and his six sons will act as pallbearers.



Monday, June 7, 1920

Jacob Brown, president of the Riverside Light, Power and Gas Company,died at his home in this city Saturday evening. He furnished Abilene with its first electric light and power. He is survived by his, his son, C. L. Brown, and two daughters, Mrs. G. A. Rogers and Miss Jennie Brown, all of Abilene. Funeral services will be from the home tomorrow, with burial in the Abilene Cemetery.

John Holroyd, 70, died suddenly this morning at his home five and one half miles south of Abilene. He had resided in Kansas over forty years. He is survived by his wife and one daughter, Mary. Burial will be Thursday in the Abilene Cemetery.

John Truelove, 40, the victim of a shooting attack at Herington last week, died on Saturday night. His assailants are still unknown. He was employed as the stationary engineer on the Rock Island at Herington, and left a wife and several children. His body will be taken to his old home in Eugene, Missouri, for burial.



Wednesday, June 9, 1920

Mrs. Catherine Hoffman of Enterprise died early this morning at a hospital in Battle Creek, Michigan. Her daughter, Mrs. J. Edward Johntz and two sons, Ralph and Thad Hoffman, left immediately for Michigan and will bring her body back here for burial. Services will be Saturday afternoon from the Hoffman home in Enterprise.



Monday, June 14, 1920

August Miller, 25, a Herington brakeman, was killed yesterday at Paxico when the boiler of a freight engine exploded.

L. P. Walker died yesterday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. George S. Hersh, in Arnett, Oklahoma. He was an old settler of Dickinson county, coming here in 1885. The body is being shipped here for burial. Two sons will come from Portland, Oregon, for the services.

Manchester news: The community was saddened to hear of the death of Dewey Wilson in Kansas City on June 10. The funeral was held in the Swartwood Cemetery Sunday morning.



Friday, June 18, 1920

Jacob A. Friedli died June 11 while working for the Union Pacific near Omaha. The hand car he was driving derailed and he was pinned underneath. He formerly lived in Dillon, and was the son of the late Casper and Anna Friedli. The body was brought back to this county and services were held at the home of his brother-in-law, Ulrich Rutz, near Hope, and burial was in the New Basel Cemetery.

Andrew Kropff, 84, died this morning of dropsy at the city hospital. He is survived by five children, three of whom live in this county. They are Mrs. Jake Stoner, Mrs. Pat Hughes and Edward Kropff. Services will be Thursday from the Methodist church with burial in the Talmage Cemetery.

Mrs. Hannah Kirkwood, 87, died at her home on West First street yesterday morning after a lingering illness. She is survived by two daughters and six sons. Burial tomorrow in the Abilene Cemetery.

John Rennigan died Monday in Chicago. He is survived by his wife and two daughters. Mrs. Rennigan is a sister of Joe and Jack White. The body was brought here this afternoon and burial was from the train in the Catholic cemetery.

Miss Cora Dees died Wednesday at the home of her sister, Mrs. J. J. Jeffcoat on West Fifth street. She was born in Hayesville, Ohio, Oct. 22, 1870 and came to Cheever Twp. with her family when a child. Her mother died when she was very young, and as eldest Cora devoted her life to the rearing of her brothers and sisters. Besides Mrs. Jeffcoat she is survived by three other sisters, Mrs. C. Murphy of Oklahoma, Mrs. John Piehing of Abilene and Mrs. Charles McCosh of Cheever, and three brothers, Lewis of Oklahoma, Fred of Idaho and Edward of Montana. The funeral will be held Friday from the home near Buckeyw with interment in the Livingston cemetery.

James A. Mann died Wednesday morning, June 23rd, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Harvy Wetzel, near Manchester. He was born in Ireland in 1850 and came to America when quite young. He had lived in Clay County for many years but since last September had made his home with his daughter. He is also survived by two son, both living in Canada. His wife died several years earlier.

Donald Ledy, two year old son of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Ledy died last night of scarlet fever at the home of A. O. Zook on East Sixth street. Services were held from the Zook home this afternoon with burial in the Abilene cemetery.

Mrs. Florentine Messing, 87, mother of Walter Messing, died Sunday afternoon, June 27th. Services will be held Tuesday with interment in the Abilene Cemetery.

Edith Francis Pleiser, thirteen month old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Pleiser of Pampa died Sunday morning in the Abilene hospital after a two weeks' illness of sleeping sickness. The funeral was held this morning from the home of Clem. Pleiser, with burial in the Catholic cemetery.

Mabel Bigler, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Bigler, died this morning at the family home on Vine street. She had been recovering from a goiter operation performed about three weeks ago, but suffered a relapse on Sunday that proved fatal. She was a Red Cross worker, a member of the Coterie club, Camp Fire sponsor and Sunday School teacher at the Presbyterian church.

Ry Bonner, 33, of Herington, was accidently killed in the Rock Island yards at Kansas City on Monday, after he fell between the cars and was run over.

Harris Chapman, 9-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Chapman of Herington, drowned in the little pool on Lime creek. Five years ago the small son of Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Ensign was drowned in the same pool.

Dr. Ralph N. Gorden, 47, died yesterday at Vancouver, Washington. He was born 1873 in Abilene and about half his life was spent here. He was the son of D. R. Gorden of this city, and graduated from Abilene High School and the medical department of Michigan University at Ann Arbor. He married Miss Pearl Taylor in Abilene and brought her to his home in Washington, but she died three months later. The body will be brought back to Abilene for burial beside the resting place of his mother.

Mrs. Mary E. Stein, 72, wife of Christian L. Stein, died at the family home six miles south of Gypsum yesterday morning after a short illness. The family formerly resided in Abilene some ten years. She is survived by her husband and eight children. Services will be held tomorrow from the Mt. Pleasant church, fourteen miles south of Abilene.

Miss Hannah Cassel, 65, died Saturday evening at the home of her sister, Mrs. Mary A. Hawk, after a lingering illness. She is survived by three brothers and two sisters. Services were Sunday from the Hawk residence, and the body was sent to Hamlin, Kansas, her former home, for burial.

Harden P. Raney, 85, died yesterday evening at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Hoon, on Enterprise street, last evening. He had lived in Abilene and vicinity for the last forty years. He is survived by three daughters. Funeral services will be from the Hoon home on Thursday, with burial in the Abilene Cemetery.

Edna Dedrick, two year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Dedrick died at her home south of Chapman last week of pneumonia. Services were held yesterday from the home.

The seven month old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Woolverton died Sunday at the home west of town. Heart trouble was the cause of her death. She is also survived by five brothers and sisters.

James Franklin Boyd was born Sept. 9, 1854 in Ohion and died July 19, 1920. He married Elizabeth McCurdy thirty six years ago; she died May 21, 1907. They were the parents of five boys and two girls, all of whom died in infancy except Mrs. Frank Graham and Elmer Boyd of this city; also one granddaughter, Ramona Louise Boyd.

William Rynearson, 68, died Wednesday at his home in Longford. He was an old settler of Dickinson county and had a merchantile business at Manchester for many years. Before that he had worked for Bonebrake hardware. He is survived by an invalid wife.

George Dieter of Oakhill died yesterday at his home there. He was a veteran of the Civil War, and was the father of Dr. J. N. Dieter of this city.

The body of John Johnston, who was killed in an automobile accident two weeks ago in California, was returned to Hope last week and buried Sunday at Woodbine.

Lois Dunlop, infant child of Mr. and Mrs. John Dunlop of Detroit, passed away at the family home Saturday evening, July 31. Burial was in the Bethel Cemetery.

James S. Houlten, 74, died at the home of Charles Howland four miles northwest of Abilene, July 31, of paralysis. He leaves a wife and daughter. He had been confined to his bed for the last four years. Burial was this afternoon in the Abilene Cemetery.

Mrs. Carrie Burchard, 70, widow of W. T. Burchard, died at her home in Wichita Falls, Texas on Monday, Aug. 2 of cancer. The family formerly lived some six miles southeast of Abilene. Deceased leaves a number of children, including Mrs. Wesley Graves of Abilene and Samuel Burchard, who moved from here to Minnesota a few years ago.

John Henry Cartner, 36, died July 29 after getting a wheat beard lodged in his throat. He was born Oct. 1, 1883 in Hiawatha, Kansas. His father died when he was young, leaving him to care for his mother and two sisters. He married Miss Lydia Derrick in 1910 and they came to Dickinson county that same year. He is survived by his wife, their three children, Ralph, Kenneth and Mildred, and his two sisters, Mrs. E. Derrick and Mrs. H. N. Derrick of Hiawatha. He was buried August 1 in the Union Cemetery.

Henry U. Rohrer, 34, died at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ulrich Rohrer, last night after a lingering illness. He is also survived by a wife and child, and his brothers and sisters. The funeral will be held from the home on Friday and from the church at New Basel.

Eli Sherman, 74, died Wednesday at his home in Manchester after a lingering illness. He leave a wife and eight children to mourn his loss. Among the surviving children who are well known in Abilene and vicinity is Sheriff John Sherman, Mrs. W. A. Matteson and Theo W. Sherman. Burial will be Saturday at the White Cloud cemetery.

John Mueller, 51, committed suicide at his farm home five miles north of Abilene. He and his family came here from Beatrice, Nebraska about ten years ago. He leaves a wife and six or more children, some of whom are grown. The body will be shipped back to the old home in Nebraska for burial.

Will Cunningham, a young section hand at Herington, was killed by lightning yesterday in a telephone book on the Missouri Pacific line east of that place.

Mrs. Catharine Harden, 79, died Monday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Denver Swisher, one and a half miles west of Talmage. The body will be taken to Powhatan, Brown Co., Kansas for burial.

Stephen Rohrer, 73, died at his home on South Spruce after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife, three daughters and three sons, all of whom were with him at the time of death. Mr. Rohrer came to Kansas in 1861. He settled on Turkey creek, south of town, and the family lived there until three years ago, when he and his wife came to Abilene to live. Ralph Theophilus Wilcox, 65, died Sept. 11 at the home of his son, H. A. Wilcox, on West Sixth street. He was born Dec. 1, 1854 at Sheboygan, Michigan, and married Emma Lathrop on Oct. 26, 1882 in Hampshire, Illinois. To this union seven children were born, all of whom survive except one daughter. The body was taken to Oxford, Kansas for interment.

A. M. Kistler, 19, died this morning in the Abilene hospital. He was taken ill with typhoid fever while working on a road crew near Detroit. The body will be taken to Manhattan for burial.

Mrs. Estella Shirk died in Topeka Monday evening and the funeral will be held there on Thursday. She was a sister of C. E. and N. P. Rugh of the county. She was a graduate of Abilene High School and taught in the city schools for a number of years prior to her marriage. She is also survived by her husband, D. F. Shirk, son Harold and daughter Helen.

She had her mother had recently joined her father in Hoxie, where he was threshing wheat. Genuine was born oct. 24, 1915 in Abilene. The cause of death is not known. The body is being brought back to Abilene for burial.

Charles A. Lyman, aged 74 years, died suddenly Monday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Hoover Callahan, who resides two miles southeast of Buckeye. The remains will be taken to Lincoln, Nebraska for burial.

Mrs. Huldah/Hilda M. Buchanan, 63, wife of Rev. William Buchanan, died Sunday morning at their home three miles north of Buckeye on Sunday morning.� She leaves a husband and five children to mourn her departure. The body was taken to Burns, Kansas for interment.

George Power, who was badly injured when a cream separator exploded at the Hope condensary a few days ago, died last night in a Salina hospital. He leaves a wife and child who reside in Hope.

Otto Schlesener, 23, died Thursday morning in this city. He is survived by his wife and infant daughter, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Schlesener and several sisters and a brother living near Hope.� The body will be taken to Hope for burial.

Mrs. Lillian Wise, 27, died at LaGrande, Oregon on Sunday, Oct. 17. She was born at Russell, Kansas, on April 1, 1894.� She married Fred Wise on September 19, 1913 and they moved to Oregon. Besides her� husband, she leaves her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas L. Seybold of E. Enterprise street, four sisters and three brothers, to mourn her death. The body is being brought back here for burial in the Abilene Cemetery.

Mrs. F. S. Gibson, an early settler of Jefferson township and for several years a resident of Abilene, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. N. E. Gish, in Lincoln, Nebraska, on Sunday. During the Civil War, Mrs. Gibson lived in Missouri, while her husband. J. W. Gibson, was in the Union Army. In 1871 they moved to a homestead in Jefferson township and in 1892 to Abilene. He came to Abilene in 1871 and was well known throughout the county, for years operating an abstract business. �He had spent last winter at the soldiers' home in Leavenworth, and was hoping to return there in a week or so.� Telegrams have been sent to his sons, Ralph and Frank, in Chicago and as soon as they are located, services will be set with burial in the Abilene Cemetery, beside the wife who died several years ago. Daniel S. Clark, 80, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. F. Tonkin at Howard, Kansas on Saturday, Dec. 4. He had been visiting and became ill about two weeks ago. Mrs. Clark died about nine years ago at Hope.� He is survived by a son, J. M. Clark, and three daughters--Mrs. Tonkin, Mrs. Martha Blesh of Oakdale, Nebraska and Mrs. C. J. Koepke of Muskogee, Oklahoma. Burial will be in Pilgrim Home cemetery, adjacent to the family estate� which he homesteaded in the late sixties.

Frederick Yuhl, 74, was found dead beside a haystack on his farm five miles southeast of Abilene Saturday night. After not seeing him for several hours, the family concluded he had gone to Abilene, but late his son Henry went looking for him and found him in a sitting position against the haystack.� He is also survived by his wife and daughter. Burial will be from the cemetery at Enterprise.

Mrs. Queenie K. Cruse died Sunday morning of heart trouble, following an operation at the Abilene hospital. She came here about five years ago with her husband, who took charge of the Ford Motor Co. She is survived by her husband, her parents, Mr. and �Mrs. John Ketchersid of Hope, five brothers and two sisters, Miss Bell Ketchersid of Kansas City and Mrs. Gladys Stoffer of Hope. The remains of Frank Pennington who died yesterday in Denver of pneumonia arrived here by train today. He was born August 6, 1873 in Pennsylvania.� With his parents he moved to Breckenridge, Colorado when a boy, and in the early '80's came to Abilene. The funeral will take place Sunday afternoon from the W. A. Matteson home.

Lt. Paul Gleissner's body will arrive here this afternoon.� His brother John Gleissner, Jr. of Washington, D. C. accompanied the body from New York. The funeral will be tomorrow from the Presbyterian church.

A. W. Hargreaves died Dec. 24 in Florida, where he and his wife were spending the winter. No further information is known at this time.

Andrew James Stillie, Jr. died at the home of his parents in the South part of the city on Christmas Day. He was born in Abilene on Dec. 14, 1894 and attended the city schools.� He married Miss Katherine Poleneck on Nov. 28, 1913, and to them were born two children, one dying in infancy and the other remaining to mourn, with his mother, the death of a kind father and loving husband; he is also survived by three sisters and four brothers. Burial will be tomorrow in the Abilene Cemetery.

Mrs. Charity Frances Humble Wilson, 83, died at the home of her daughter in Tulsa on Dec. 24. She was born July 23, 1839 in Clark county, Ohio and with her parents moved to Noble county, Indiana, where on April 10, 1856 she married John Alexander Wilson. He died Oct. 12, 1897. She is survived by eight children: John Henry Wilson and Mrs. D. A. Gants of Abilene, James L. Wilson of Marienthal, Mrs. Charles Kubach of Denver, Mrs. Mattie Brown of Tulsa, Grant D. Wilson of Ottawa, Mrs. M. D. Betz of Los Angeles and Charles L. Wilson of Akron, Ohio. Two daughters preceded their mother in death: Mrs. S. H. Weigle and Katie Wilson. The body was brought back to this county for burial in the Rinehart Cemetery.



Thursday, Dec. 20, 1920

Mrs. Elsie M. Bowers, 27, died at her mother's home on North Elm street Wednesday afternoon. Besides her mother, she is survived by her husband, James T. Bowers



Friday, Dec. 31, 1920

Luther M. Johnson, 52, died this morning at his home in the north part of the city. He had worked as a printer for the Reflector for the last 32 years. He is survived by a wife and five children.

Mrs. Edith C. Curphey, wife of W. C. Curphey, died at her home in Salina this morning after a lingering illness with neuritis. The family formerly lived in Carlton and Abilene before moving to Salina. She is survived by her husband and three children.
