Henry Lewis Abels died  Aug. 3, 1999, at Clay Center;  born May 20, 1910, in Blaine Township of Clay County, the son of William Fredrick and Lulu Mae (Kemp) Abels; married Rosabelle "Rosie" Kimbrough Sept. 16, 1931; preceded in death by a son and a sister; survived by his wife, two daughters, a brother, two grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren; burial in Greenwood Cemetery


ABELS
Rosabelle "Rosie" Edwina Abels, 95, died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2008, at Arkansas City; born Aug. 15, 1912, at Clay Center, the daughter of Frank and Rosa Edwina (Gillespie) Kimbrough; married Henry Abels on Sept. 16, 1931, at Clay Center; he preceded her in death on Aug. 3, 1999; also preceded in death by one son, Barry Abels, one grandson and one sister; survived by two daughters, Joyce Gibbs of Arkansas City and Eloyse Abels of Irving, Tex.; two grandsons; and four great-grandchildren; funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Neill-Schwensen-Rook Chapel in Clay Center with the Rev. James Byers officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Clay Center.


ADAIR
Mrs. Emma Adair, who has been a resident of Clay county for a number of years, passed away Wednesday morning at 6:45 o;clock, after several weeks illness. The funeral services will be held today at 9 o'clock at the family home in this city and later at the Athelstane cemetery, where burial will be made. The deceased is survived by her husband and children. (CC Times, May 21, 1914)

ADAM
Henry Adam was born March 31, 1914 in Jennings county, Indiana, and at the age of eighteen years, in September of 1877, came to the state of Kansas. On November 22, of the year 1883, he was united in marriage to Miss Emma Niemoller, to which union was born six children, four boys and two girls: Henry Jr., Clara, Albert Ethel and two little ones, who wee called home in their infancy. At the age of eighteen he was converted and united with the German Methodist church near his home but on February 9, 1908 was received into the Wakefield Methodist church by the pastor, Rev. E. T. Lacey. Mr. Adam passed away March 21, 1914, following a seven weeks illness, in spite of all that could be done for his recovery in the way of medical skill and nursing. He was one of the very best of citizens and will be greatly missed from the community, where he has done much good work. Besides the members of the immediate family there are surviving two sisters, Mrs. Peter Koerner, of Junction City, and Mrs. P. J. Strack, of New Albany, Ind. Family services were held at the home last Tuesday afternoon, from whence the body was taken to the M. E. church, were services were conducted by Rev. A. P. Jones, with the assistance of the Rev. J. C. Warren of the Congregational church, Rev. A. S. Freese of the St. George's Episcopal church and J. F. Carter. Burial was in the Wakefield cemetery. (CC Times, April 2, 1914)


ADAMS
The youngest child of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Adams, of Wakefield, died Sunday, March 1, after having been ill with the measles about a week. A few weeks ago Mrs. Adams and the three children went to Oswego to visit her parents and while there the children all took ill with the measles, resulting in the death of the youngest. Mr. and Mrs. Adams have not lived long in Wakefield, recently moving to that place from Manhattan, but the many Wakefield people whose friendship they have acquired during their residence in Clay county, sorrow with them in the loss of their baby. Burial was made in the Wakefield cemetery. (CC Times March 12, 1914)

Earl Joseph Adams, 99, died Tuesday, July 17, 2007, at Clay Center; born Sept. 29, 1907, at Linn, the son of Nepoleon and Mary Philomen (Martin) Adams; married Mary C. Martin on March 8, 1943, at Kimeo; preceded in death by his wife, Mary Adams, two brothers and three sisters; burial in Greenwood Cemetery.

Juanita Adams born Oct. 16, 1905, in Washington County, the daughter of Clyde and Christina (Holtz) Seon; died Jan. 6, 2000; married Gedion Lindholm who preceded her in death in 1959; married the Rev. Carl Adams June 29, 1967, and he preceded her Dec. 20, 1990; also preceded by a twin sister;  burial at Mount James Cemetery in Greenleaf.

William L. "Bill" Adams, 77, died Monday, Feb. 12, 2007, in Ft. Worth; born in 1929, at Clay Center, the son of Glenn and Elizabeth Adams; married Betty Ann Froehlich, at Los Angeles, Calif; survived by his wife, Betty Ann Froehlich Adams;four sons, Glenn Adams and wife Melinda, Craig Adams and wife Patty, Drew Adams and wife Corinne and Kenneth Adams and wife Cristina; brothers and sisters; one sister-in-law; and 14 grandchildren; entombment at Greenwood Mausoleum.

Rev. Harry Thomas Adamson, 94, died Sunday, May 21, 2006, at Indianapolis, Ind; born Feb. 15, 1912, at Easton, the son of Thomas Craig and Lucy (Hulett) Adamson; preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Adamson; one son,Kenneth Ray Adamson; one sister; and two brothers, Kenneth and Clarence Adamson; survivors include one daughter, Harriet Wilkins of Indianapolis,Ind.; one brother-in-law, Don Hammerli and wife Maxine of Salina;four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; burial in Greenwood Cemetery

Don A. Affolter, 79, died Saturday, Oct. 7,2006, at Clay Center; born June 3, 1927, at Clay Center, the son of Albert and Emma (Wyss) Affolter; attended Eagle Bend county school and Clay County Community High School;married Marilyn Thornton Oct. 3, 1948; survived by his wife, Marilyn Affolter of Clay Center;three sons, Jerry Affolter and wife Marsha of Overland Park,Dennis Affolter and wife Michelle of Topeka and David Affolter and wife Cindy of Morganville; one daughter, Jackie Chestnut and husband Bill of Salina; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild; burial in Bloom Cemetery, Clay County.


ALGREN

 Betty Joyce Algren, 79, died Monday, Jan.1, 2007, at Clay Center; born Nov. 15, 1927, at Clay Center, the daughter of Dewey and Hazel (Hahn) Chestnut; married Curtis Algren on May 6, 1951; survived by her husband, Curtis Algren of Clay Center; one sister, Kaye Chestnut of Clay Center; and one brother, Dallas Chestnut of Fredricksburg, Va.; burial in Greenwood Cemetery, Clay Center.


ALGREN
Donald A. Algren, 51, of Phillipsburg, died Nov. 7, 1973 near Norton, the victim of a truck/train crash.  He was born Dec. 21, 1921 at Clay Center.  Survivors include his wife, Leona Mae of the home; a daughter, Donice Brown of Minden, Neb.; two sons, Roy, stationed by the U.S. Army in Hawaii and Tracy of the home; and his mother, Mrs. Emma Alm of Clay Center.  Burial was in the Garfield Center Cemetery, north of Clay Center.


ALQUIST
ALQUIST, LLOYD E. -- Dr. Lloyd E. Alquist died yesterday. Dr. Lloyd E. Alquist, a dentist in Clay Center for over 50 years, died Sunday at the Presbyterian Manor at the age of 89. He was born July 15, 1886 in the Hayes Community, the son of Victor and Anna Alquist. When he was a child the Alquist family moved into Clay Center. He was a graduate from the Clay Center High School and of the Kansas City Dental College, with the Class of 1912. He was married Oct. 23, 1912 to Elsa Slade. He was a member of the Clay Center Baptist Church, Clay Center Lodge No. 134, AF&AM, Bethany Chapter, Coronado Commandery and the Shrine. Alquist was a charter member of the Rotary Club, a charter member of the Country Club, a long time director of the Union State Bank and served as a member of a number of honorary Dental societies. He also served for a number of years on various committees and organizations in the community. Preceding him in death was a son, Orien, who died in infancy, his parents, a sister and two brothers. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Elsa Alquist of the home at 424 Frederick St., and a niece, Mary Anne Caldwell of Kansas City, Mo. The services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Donald Gaines officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood cemetery. ALQUIST
ALQUIST, MARY ELSA (Slade) Elsa Alquist. Mrs. Elsa Alquist, 92, of 424 Frederick, died at the Clay County Hospital Monday evening. She was born March 17, 1887 in Clay Center, the daughter of Orion and Lorinda Slade. She had spent her entire life in Clay Center. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, PEO, a 50 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Library Club, American Legion Auxiliary and the K.U. Alumni Association. The survivors are a brother, George Slade and his wife Edythe of Clay Center; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Anna Alquist of Clay Center and Mrs. Flora Slade of Eureka; many nieces and nephews. Preceding her were her husband, Dr. Lloyd Alquist; her parents; an infant son; seven sisters; three brothers. Services will be held on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in the Baptist Church, with the Rev. Donald Gaines officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the Neill-Schwensen Funeral Home on Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Big Lakes Development Center, Inc., in care of Union State Bank. Phillip Wayne Alquist, 52, died Monday, Aug.7, 2006, in Topeka; born Sept. 19, 1953, at Clay Center, the son of Keith and Gyle (Hinkel) Alquist; married Debbie Griffin,Jan. 1, 1994 at Topeka; survived by his wife, Debbie Alquist of Topeka; one daughter, Emerald Renee Alquist of Sioux City, Iowa; two sons, Derek Wayne Alquist and Mark Phillip Alquist, both of Bloomfield, Iowa; two step-sons, David Baker of Topeka and Marshall Sheppard of Hutchinson; his father, Keith E. Alquist I of Clay Center; four brothers, Keith Alquist II of Colorado, Eric V. Alquist of Clay Center; Jim Smith of Salina and Bill Smith of Topeka; three sisters, Christine Sauder of Manhattan, Connie Newsom of Washington State and Patricia Halstead of Clay Center; one granddaughter; and one step-grandson; no burial information.


ALQUIST
ALQUIST, RUTH ANN (Hickok) -- CLAY CENTER - Ruth Ann Alquist, 67, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, at Mercy Health Center College Ave., Manhattan. Mrs. Alquist was born July 12, 1936, at Pond Creek, Okla., the daughter of Orlo and Eve (Vierk) Hickok. She worked for Phillips Lighting Co. at Salina for over 21 years retiring in July of 1998. She married Keith E. Alquist May 28, 1969 and survives of the home in Clay Center. She and her husband farmed northeast of Clay Center. She was a member of the Alla Serra Cluster, Colleens and Piloteers Sunday School class, which she led for two years. She was also a member of the American Legion Post #101 Auxiliary, American Red Cross Auxiliary and the Wellness Clinic, all of Clay Center. She was preceded in death by two brothers. Survivors include her husband, Keith Alquist of Clay Center; three sons, Jim and wife Laura Smith of Topeka, Bill and wife Janet Smith of Salina, and Eric and wife Michelle Alquist of Clay Center; two daughters, Patricia and husband Dennis Halstead of Clay Center, and Christine and husband Brady Sauder of Manhattan; two stepsons, Keith and wife Julie Alquist II of Brighton, Colo., and Phil and wife Debbie Alquist of Topeka; one step daughter, Connie Newsom of Mesa, Ariz.; one stepbrother, Bob Boyle of Glenwood Springs, Colo.; one stepsister, Betty Boyle of Springfield, Ill.; 15 grandchildren; and 4 great grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Clay Center with the Rev. Glenn Tombaugh and the Rev. Gerald Martin officiating. Patience Amcoats, 82, Clay Center, died at her home. Born in Warsop, Nottinghamshire, England, on April 7, 1873, she had lived in America since 1888. She is survived by her brother Sam, sisters Mrs. Albert Rundle and Elizabeth Amcoats and niece Mrs. Walter Benson, all of Clay Center; another niece, Mrs. J. C. Allen of Phoenix, AZ. Arvid R. "Red" Anderson, 89, died Tuesday, March 28, 2006 in Kansas City, MO; born Dec. 3, 1916, at Clay Center, the son of Hans Christian and Wilda Fae (Henry) Anderson; preceded in death by his wife, Eileen (Hagen) Anderson and one sister, Lyla Johnson; survivors include two sons, Dennis Anderson and wife Barbara of Kansas City, Mo. and John Anderson of Overland Park; two brothers, Warren Anderson of Clay Center and Melvin Anderson of Tescott; and four sisters, Irene Yonally of El Cajon, Calif., Billie Carlson of Kelseyville, Calif.,Dee Germann of Clay Center and Donis Mosburg of Greenwood, Mo.; burial in Mt. Mrs. J. Anderson died Monday of typhoid malaria are the mature age of 61, leaving a husband and one son. We extend our sympathies to the stricken. She was buried in a country cemetery. (Clay Center Democrat, July 22, 1886)

Warren Richard Anderson, age 72, died November 27, 2007;born April 23, 1935 at Clay Center, Kansas, the son of Herbert and Berta Hundley Anderson; he and Barbara Forkner were married January17, 1959 at the First Baptist Church in Clay Center; preceded in death by sons, Troy and Dane, his parents Herbert and Berta Anderson, brothers, Howard, Martin, and Francis,sisters, Iola, Barbara Jean, and Charlotte. Survivors include his wife Barbara, of the home, son Eric and wife Lori, Lingle, Wyoming,daughter Lisa and husband Andy Contreras, Cibolo, Texas,daughter-in-law, Jennifer Anderson, Sammamish, Washington, mother-in-law, Rosalie Forkner-Rose, Torrington, Wy., brothers, Donald and wife Joyce, Wellington, Dan Anderson, Sabetha, and sister Gladys Van Amburg, Derby, Ks. He is also survived by sisters-in-law, Jane Forkner, Plano, Texas, and Nancy Forkner, Torrington, Wy. Warren is survived by grandchildren, Emily, Elizabeth, Erica, Anne, Andrea, Alexis, and Denny and great grandchildren, Dakota, Dallie, Dillon,Paige, Cordell, Jaiden, Ethan, and Blake. and several nieces and nephews; burial at the Greenwood Cemetery.


ANDERSON
Thomas Anderson, a resident of Hayes Twp., this county, for many years, but of late a resident in Colorado, passed away last Friday afternoon at the home of his nephew, Charles Anderson, jr., in the city, at 823 Seventh St. Mr. Anderson was at his death aged 86 years, 7 months and 3 days. The deceased was born June 3, 1827, at Lumley, England, and came to this country, when quite young, with his parents who first settled in Schylkill county, Pa. In the year 1862 Mr. Anderson was married to Miss Maria Williams, to which union was born six children, four of whom with the wife survive, the surviving children being: Mrs. Walter Thomas of Lesterr, Colo.; Mrs. J. W. Kenney of Phoenix, Ariz.; James of Charna, New Mexico; and Charles of Lyden, Colo. A brother, Charles Anderson, resides in Clay Center. Burial was made in the Hayes cemetery. Warren W. Anderson, 92 died Thursday, June 26,2008, at Olathe; born July 9, 1915, in Clay County, the son of Christian and Wilda (Henry) Anderson; married Dorothy Jean (Small) Faulconer on July 10, 1955; she preceded him in death on Dec. 22, 1992; also preceded in death by one brother, one sister and one grandson; survived by two daughters, Judy De Noon and husband Bob of Olathe and Joyce Reinert and husband Allan of Halsted; four sisters, Irene Yonally of San Diego, Calif., Billie Carlson of Kelseyville, Calif., Dee Germann of Clay Center and Donis Mosburg of Greenwood, Mo.; one brother, Melvin Anderson of Tescott; five grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren; funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Clay Center. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Clay Center.

ARNOLD
Ralph W. Arnold passed peacefully away at the home of his sister, Mrs. C. J. Ferguson of Saragosa, Texas, on Oct. 1, after an illness of nearly two months. He was born in Manchester, New York, on April 21, 1873, and came with his parents to Clay County in 1878. Their home was just north of Longford where he lived the greater part of his life. About four years ago he went to Saragosa, Texas where he has since resided. He was a good citizen and well liked by those who knew him. He leaves five brothers and a sister: L. D. Arnold of Manhattan, Kansas; Robert Arnold of Hoxie, Kansas; W. C. Arnold of Oakland, Calif.; A. C. Arnold of Senora, Mexico; Raymond Arnold and Mrs. C. J. Ferguson, both of Saragosa, Texas. Inez V. Arterburn born December 14, 1919, at Sherwood, N.D., the daughter of Frank and Cora (Holter) Schiffman; died September 28, 2003 in Kearney; preceded in death by one grandson, two brothers and two sisters; survived by her husband, one daughter, two grandchildren and five great grandchildren; burial in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery

Rodney Adkins, 42, died Monday, Sept. 17, 2007, at Osawatomie State Hospital, Osawatomie; born Dec. 11, 1964, at Jacksonville, Mo.; married Gloria Hagan on Dec. 11, 1996; preceded in death by his father; survived by his wife, Gloria Adkins of Clay Center; his mother,Edna Faye Adkins of Chino, Calif.; one stepson, Wayne Fischer of Kearney, Neb.; three stepdaughters, Cynthia Marie Kingery of Indianapolis, Ind., Melissa Ann Trent and husband Randy of Ogden and Michelle Kay Callahan and husband Mike of Manhattan; three sisters,Debbie Garcia of Phoenix, Ariz., Theresa Lehman of Atlanta, Ga. and Sharon of Chino, Calif.; and 11 grandchildren; burial in Greenwood Cemetery.

Anna Jo Atkinson born Sept. 26, 1930, at Bala, the daughter of Clifford J. and Margaret (Peterson) Young; died Oct. 6, 1999, at Hutchinson; married Gerald Atkinson on March 15, 1951, in Abilene; preceded in death by a sister and survived by her husband, a daughter, two sons, a sister, and five grandchildren; burial in Greenwood Cemetery

Irene Atkinson born March 27, 1918, in Clifton, the daughter of George E. and Ora N. (Tiemeyer) Patterson; died Oct. 30, 1999; preceded in death by a son; married John W. Atkinson June 11, 1941, in Clifton; he survives, along with two sons, two daughters, a brother, and six grandchildren; burial at Mount Hope Cemetery in Topeka

Hazel Inez Auld, 98, died Wednesday, June 28,2006, at Clay Center; born Jan. 26, 1908, at Woodbine, the daughter of Richard and Grace (Davidson) Fasse; married Robert Auld Jr. May 2,1934; he preceded her in death Sept. 13, 1986; also preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters; survivors include two sons, Sam Auld and wife Pat of Wakefield and Robert Auld and wife Carol of Kenewick, Wash.; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren; burial in Madura Cemetery.

Phyllis Auld,  born Nov. 11, 1921, at Clay County, the daughter of Edgar and Gladys (Pocock) Gaston; died March 25, 2004 ;married Frank Auld on Feb. 22, 1941; preceded in death by her husband; survived by daughter and two granddaughters; burial in Timber Creek Cemetery, Clay County.

Margaret Avery, 104, died Friday, Feb. 9,2007, in Topeka; born March 17, 1902, at Wakefield, the daughter of Herman and Hattie (Coffman) Avery; preceded in death by her parents and a brother. Surviving is a brother William H. Avery of Wakefield, Kansas and her nieces and nephews; inurnment will be in Highland Cemetery, Wakefield.

Pearl Thurlow Avery, 84, died Thursday, June29, 2006, in Leonardville; born Jan. 11, 1922, at Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of Lowry and Frances (McCune) Tague; married Roderick Thurlow Feb. 14, 1941; he preceded her in death May12, 1987; also preceded in death by one daughter-in-law, Arlene Thurlow June 29, 2004; married Albion Avery Sept. 24, 1992; survivors include her husband, Albion Avery of Leonardville;two sons, Kenneth Thurlow and wife Camille of Wakefield and Steven Thurlow of Riley; one daughter, Connie Taylor and husband Paul of Olsburg; three stepdaughters, Jonne Long of Kansas City, Kan., Cheri Black of Philadelphia, Penn. and Kriss Avery of St. Louis, Mo.; one brother, Bill Tague of Topeka; two sisters, Marjorie Brown of Los Angeles, Calif. and Rosie Handley of Topeka; eight grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren; burial in the Timber Creek Cemetery east of Wakefield
