VIVIAN L. POWELL
VIVIAN L. POWELL, of Southeast Kansas City,a teacher, died March 13, 1992, at Trinty Lutheran Hospital. Mrs. Powell taughty third grade at Henry C. Kumpf Elementary School for 10 years. Earlier she taught at the Horace Mann and Douglass elementary schools; she taught in Kansas City for more than 30 years. She recived a bachelor's degree in English and music from Lincoln University in Jefferson City and attended the University of Missouri-Kansas City, Kansas State University, Northeast Missouri State University and Avila College. She was a Catholic. She was born in Sapulpa, Okla., and lived in this area for 40 years

Survivors include her husband, Hubert W. Powell Jr. of the home; three sons, Hubert W. Powell III, Kansas City, Victor W. Powell, Washington, D.C., and Eric W. Powell, of the home; three brothers, Robert Davis, Leavenworth, Donald Davis, Oklahoma City, and Gerald Davis, Tulsa, Okla., two sisters, Maxine Carter, St. Louis, and Patricia Scott, Chicago; and a granddaughter. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Watkins Brush Creek Chapel; burial in Floral Hills Cemetery. The family suggests contributions to the Leukemia Society of America.

BONNIE M. POWELL, 56, Lawrence, formerly of Springhill in Johnson County, died May 9, 1993, at the home. Services wil be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the McLouth, KS, United Methodist Church; graveside services at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the Highland Cemetery, Iola, KS. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Warren-McElwain Chapel in Lawrence. The family suggests contributions to the church. Mrs. Powell was born in Iola, and lived throughout Kansas and in Springhill before moving to Lawrence in 1986. She was office manager for the Hill Chiropractic Clinic in Lawrence since 1991 She attended WestMar College in La Mars, Iowa. She was past president of the Lawrence chapter of the Business and Professional Women. Survivors include her husband, the Rev. Donald D. Powell of the home; a son, Ronald Powell, Lawrence; a daughter, Cheryl Gentleman, Beloit, KS; her mother, Marjorie Upshaw, Iola; a brother, Paul Ray Upshaw, Iola; and two grandchildren.

WINFRED MONROE "Win" POWELL, 86, Kansas City, KS, died Feb 5, 1992, at a hospital in Plainville, KS. He was born in Louisburg, KS, and lived in Kansas City, KS, most of his life. He alsoived in Pleasanton, KS. Mr. Powell was a heavy-equipment operator, retiring from the Union Construction Co. He was a member of the Scottish Rite bodies and the Fort Scott (KS) Consistroy. Survivors include his wife, Charlotte Powell of the home; a daughter, Shirley Mauck, Stockton; four gradchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Torneden-Coffel Chapel, Pleasanton; burial in the Pleasanton Cemetery.

Mrs. Powell was born in Emporia, KS, and moved to Kansas City, KS in 1937. She formerly taught art at Emporia High School and Emporia State Teachers College. She was a member and past deaconess of the church, past president of the Whatsoever circle, past chairman of the Mayflower group and a past menber of the chior. She was a member of the Wyandotte and Trailblazers camping clubs and the Progressive Study Ckub. She was a past honored queen of Job's Daughters in Emporia, a 60 year member of the Sherman chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the League of Scottish Rite Women. She was a member of the El Maat temple of the Daughters of the Nile and of the temple's Ding-a-ling Band Unit. She received a bachelor's degree from Emporia State Teacher's College in 1934. Survivors include her husband, John C. Powell of the home; a daughter, Jonanne Rose, Kansas City, KS; a grandson, and a great-granddaughter.

She was a member of the Gladstone Seniors Club, the Northtown Golden Agers and the Platte Woods and McMurry clubs for seniors. Survivors include a son, Jerry Powell, Kansas City; three daughters, Darlene Coats, San Jacinto, CA, Arlene Allen, Harlingen, TX \, and Carol Matthews, Independence; a brother, Clarence Sutherland, OK; 16 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

Helen POWELL James, 98, Prairie Village, KS, passed away Tuesday, February 26, 2002, at Somerset Health Center at Claridge Court. A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, March 2nd, at the chapel of Village Presbyterian Church, 6641 Mission Rd., Prairie Village, KS. Friends may greet the family in the church parlor immediately following the service. Mrs. James was born in Napoleon, MO on march 27, 1903, the daughter of Joseph and Annie Powell and grew up in Odessa, MO. She was a graduate of the University of Missouri, Columbia, where she met Gilbert Lee James of Bevier, MO. They were married for 40 years until his death in 1966. She had a great love of literature and gave book reviews for most of her adult life. She served several terms as chairman of the board of Armour Memoriaal Home, and was chairman during the fundraising and construction of a new medical wing. She was a member of the Village Presbyterian Church, Women's City Club, Chi Omega, Indian Hills Country Club, Daughters of the American Revolution, Janet Boopne Service Club and Round Robin Study Club. She is survived by two sons, Donald James and his wife, Georgette, Shawnee Mission, KS, and Philip James and his wife, Susan, Ft. Collins, CO; daughter-in-law, Nan Yost and husband, Howard of Shawnee Mission, KS; seven granbdchildren, Linda James Ransey and husband, Clark, Brian James and wife, Molly, Kathleen James Ring and husband, Brad, Elizabeth James Steward and husband, Terry, Melinda James, Ryan James and Kathy Newman; seven great-grandchildren, Grant and Erin Ramey, Christopher and Taylor James, Bailey and Bridget Ring and Lillian Stewart. In addition to her late husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Norine Allen and her brother, Lawrence Powell. The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation for the care and kindness of the caregivers and the staff of Somerset Health Center, Claridge Court and Odyssey Hospice.

Powell, Memphis, Tenn.; four brothers, Ocie Powell Jr., Memphis, and Ecel Powell, Earl Powell and Cliff Powell of Detriot; six sisters, Era Simms, Detriot, Jodie Johnson, Kansas City, Rose Parrott, Phelisa Powell and Alice Eskridge of Memphis and Mildred Worthmn. SYLVESTER POWELL, JR., 82, Mission, KS, passed away March 06, 2002, at St. Joseph Health Center. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday, March 11, at St. Pius X Catholic Church. Burial in Resurrection Cemetery in Lenexa,KS. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m., Sunday, March 10, at the church, with Rosary at 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Pius X Catholic Church, 5601 Woodson, Mission, KS 66202.

Sylvester was born May 12, 1919 in Springfield, OH. He grew up in Springfield, graduating from Olive Branch High School and then attending Wittenberg University. He served as a Captain in General Patton's Third Army during WWII and was awarded four battle stars and the Bronze Star award. During the war he married Nerle Cline and on January 16 of this year they celebrated the 59th anniversary of their first date. After the war he received a law degree from the University of Kansas City and was later awarded the Juris Doctor degree. He was a trial lawyer in Kansas City, MO for 47 years, retiring in 1995. His law firm, Heilbron and Powell handled the defense work for Farmer's Insurance Group. He served as Mayor of Mission from 1955-1965 and again from 1977 until his death. Amoung the numerous awards he received were 7th Annual Litigator's Emeritus Award from the Kansas City Metropolition Bar Asspciation, Kiwanis Club Community Service Award and the Tecumseh (Ohio) School District Hal;l of Honor 2000. He was an active member of St. Pius X Church for 47 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sylvester and Jennie (Pasquinni) Powell; his brothers, Elmer, Rick and John; and his sisters, Nellie Blaine and Blanche Aldrich. Survivors include his wife, Merle; his son, and daughter-in-law, Stehen and Beverly Powell of Orlando, FL; his daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Andrew Simonsen of Overland Park; his daughter and son-in-law, Dianne and Kent Oliver of Canton, OH; grandchildren, Jennifer (Powell) and her husband, Lee Fella, Robert Powell, Peter Simonsen, Sally Simonsen and allison Oliver; and great-granddaughter, Jamie Fella. Kansas City Star, 2 WILLAIM R. "JACK" POWELL, JR., 76, of Topeka, KS, passed away Monday, March 11,2002, at a Topeka hospital. Mr. Powell was born Sept. 27, 1926, to Willaim R. and Alta E. Williamson Powell in Independence, MO. Mr. Powell graduated from Shawnee Mission High School in 1944. He attended and graduated from William Jewell College in Liberty, MO, in 1949, with a degree in History. Mr. Powell was a WWII U.S. Navy Veteran and a Korean Conflict Vetera and he served in the U.S. Airforce. For two years,

Mr. Powell taught History at Rushville High School in Rushville, MO. In 1952, he started his career with the Santa Fe Railroad and retired in 1986. Mr. Powell was a Material Supervisor at retirement, he had worked in the Argentine Yards in Kansas City, KS, and in their Topeka Offices. Mr. Powell was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity and the Masonic Lodge, and a longtime member of Covenant Baptist Church. He enjoyed family, reading and golf and was a big U.S. History buff. In 1953, Mr. Powell married Beverly Jean Mendenhall; they later divorced. She survives and lives in Kansas City, KS. In 1990, he married Grace Alleen Morris; she survives and lives in Topeka, KS.

Other survivors include one son, John "Jeff" Powell and wife, Debra, of Overland Park, KS; one daughter, Mary Ann Jones and her husband, Bill, of Midland,MI; three stepsons, Jeff Morris of Overland Park, KS , Jamie Morris of Atlanta, GA, and Todd Morris of Altanta, GA; one stepdaughter, Pam Morris of Topeka, KS; 10 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Mr. Powell will lie in state beginning at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 14, 2002, at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel, Topeka, where family will receive friends 6-8 p.m.. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, March 15, at the chapel; graveside services will be 3 p.m. Friday at Maple Hill Cemetery, Kansas City, KS. Kansas City Star, ROBERT "BOB" E. POWELL, SR., 86, Overland Park, KS, died Wednesday, March 13, 2002, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday, March 18, 2002, at McGilley & Hoge Chapel. Entombment at Chapel Hill Cemetery will military honors. Friends may call 4-6 p.m. Sunday, March 17, at the chapel. Mr. Powell was born Jul 125, 1915 in Ft. Scott, KS, the son of the late Wallace Eugene and Laura (McGarger) Powell. He was a graduate og Rosedale High School in 1922. He served in the 358th Quarter Master Corps during WWII in the Army. In 1941, he entered into the insurance business and worked there 35 years, retiring in 1981 from Blue Cross, Blue Shield. In 1943 he was the champion of both the Kansas City, KS Medal Play Golf Tournament, as well as champion of the Match Play Tournament. He repeated as t eh Kansas City, KS Match lay champion in 1944. He was past president of the Kansas City, KS Golf Association.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Henrietta Powell of the home; two sons, Robert Powell Jr. and his wife, Mary Ann and Jim Powell and his wife, Kerry, all of Overland Park, KS; a brother, Wallace4 Powell and his wife, Jeane of Ft. Scott, KS; five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; a niece, Connie Kern, Shawnee, KS. He was preceded in death by a brother, Claude Powell.

BARBARA JEAN POWELL, 53, of Santa Cruz, CA, passed away in Santa Cruz on September 10, 2002. Furneral services will be 4 p.m. Sunday, September 15 , at Amos Family Chapel of Lenexa. Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. prior to service. The family suggests contributions to the Huntingrton's Disease Society of America.

Barbara was born in Houston, TX, lived in Kansas City, Omaha, Iowa, and Pennsylvania prior to moving to Santa Cruz, six years ago. Sh enjoyed painting, sewing, and traveling. She and her husband, Tom, visited 50 states and attended baseball games at all of the major league ballparks on three occasions.

Survivors include Barbara's husband of 34 years, Tom, of the home; daughters, Sheila Powell and Jennifer Cleaery; grandchildren, Ashton Nance, Jehna Cleary, and Ricky A. Miller Jr.; brother and his wife, John C. and Gail Boyce; brother, William Boyce; and numerious nieces and nephews.

COLONEL DUDLEY F.POWELL, 81, of Gaithersburg, MD (formerly of the Kansas City area), died on Friday, December 21, 2001, at the W Salter Eedd Army Medical Center, Washington, D. C. He was the husband of Jewel G. Powell. Born on May 22, 1920 in Buffalo, MO, he was the son of the late Ray Joseph and Fay Cox Powell. Colonel Powell served in the U.S. Airforce during WWII and Vietnam, retiring after a 30-year career with the Air Force. Surviving in addition to his wife are children, Dean F. Powell of Kansas City, MO, Lance B. Powell of Anchorage, AK, Gail Tinsman of Matinburg, WV and Billy W. Turner of Glen Burnie; seven grandchildren; nine great-grabndchildren; and one great-great-grandson. Friends may call on Friday, December 28, f rom 7-9 p.m. at the Olin L. Molesworth Funeral Home, 26401 Ridge Road, Danascus, MD, where services will be held on Saturday, December 29 at 11 a.m.Interment with full Military Honors will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Peggy was born February 10, 1905, in Wheatland, MO, to Walter and Ethel (McCracken) Powell and grew up in Kansas City, MO, in the northeast area of town. She attended Scarritt and Gladstone Elementary Grade schools, graduated from Northeast High School in 1922, and attended Junior College. She and her Husband, Fran/k, owned the Northeast Market and the Hess Racquet Shop on the Concourse. She had also worked for Postal Life and Old American Insurance Companies.

Shewas preceded in death by her husband, Frank, in 1978, after 51 years of marriage, her brother, Evans Powell, as well as her parents. She is survived by her grandsons, John, and his wife, Emma, of Overland Park, KS, and David and his wife, Patty, of Olathe, KS; her three great-granddaughters, Jansen, Alyssa and Emliy; and many nieces and nephews. She was an avid radio sports fan of KU and MU Basketball, and the Royals and the Chiefs. Peggy was a member of Country Club Christian Church and its 50/560 Sunday School Class.

JEAN FRANCES (Orr) POWELL, age 58, passed away October 24, 2002, at St. Joe Medical Center. Funeral services will be at Mt. Moriah Terrace Park (North) on Sunday, October 27 at 2 p.m. Visitation willbe Saturday. October 26, at 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers maybe made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Jean was a graduate of Park Hill High School and Central Missouri State University, where she earned a Bachelor's degree in Education in 1966. She taught elementary grades in the Park Hill and Polo school districts for five years. She was also a substitute teacher for many years and loved children. She was amember of the Beta Sigma Phi and the Park Hill Christian Church. The eldest of five, she lived in the Kansas City area all her life.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Glenna Orr (Stovall) and her father, Tom Orr. She is survived by her Loving husband, Bill, and her daughter, Kathy. She also leaves behind one sister, Patricia Crews of Columbia, MO, and three brothers, Glenn Orr and Jim Orr, both of Kansas City, and Ed Orr of Liberty; and nine nieces and nephews, She was a terrific wife, mother, sister and friend. She will be missed by all.

KATHRYN ANN (Berry) POWELL of Keesville, NY, formerly of Liberty, MO, was born February 16, 1960 inHonolulu, HI and passed away October 2, 2002. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, November 02, at Grace Episcopal Church, 520 South 291 Highway, Liberty, MO. The family requests no flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grace Church, in her name.

Kathy's girlhood was spent in Liberty, MO graduating high school, Class of 1978. She culminated her education at the University of Missouri graduating Phi Begta Kappa with a Masters Degree.

Kathy loved literature, music, jewelry and people. once a friend-always a friend. She will be missed. Survivors include her husband, Dr. Thomas G. Powell; her parents, Tom and Theo Berry; her brother and sister-in-law, TJ and Shelly Berry; her nephew and niece, Alex and Sami Jo Berry; and grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Herbert W. Berry.

DAVID "CLARK" POWELL
DAVID "CLARK" POWELL, 61, of Lee's Summit, MO, died on November 21, 2002, after a yearlong battlewith cancer. Clark was born July 15, 1941, in Davenport, IA. Clark was a 1978 graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Engineering. He was a 40 year employee of Honeywell International, Federal Manufacturing and Technolodgy, Kansas City, MO, where he held a variety of staff engineering positions spanning four decades. Clark was an honorary member of the Tribe of Mic-O0Say.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Powell, of the home, and four adult children, David T. Powell, Kansas City, Alice A. Powell, Lee's Summit, Major John Vannoy, Fort Leavenworth, and Jeffery D. Vannoy, Lee Summit. Clark and also the proud "Poppie" of Emily, Gavin, and Karson Vannoy. Clark will be remembered and loved by these whose lives he touched. Memorials should be made to Boy Scouts of America, Heart of America Chapter, Kansas City. Memorial services will be held at Langsford Funeral Home, 115 SW 3rd Street, Lee's Summit, MO at 5 p.m. Sunday, November 24th.

B. F. "Jack" POWELL, JR, 89, Lathrop, MO passed away Sunday, Jan 05, 2003 at Excelsior Springs Medical Center. Jack was born November 17, 1913 in Gilliam, MO to Benjamin F. and Flora Belle Whittle Powell. Jack was a lifelong resident of Lathrop where he was a member of the Lathrop Antique Car and Engine Club and the Seedman Association of Columbia, MO. He grew and sold Hybrid Seed Corn. Jack attended Central Missouri State University and worked in construction with his brothers. Dick and Robert. He also farmed and worked for Avesco. He was a member of Gilliam Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Helen Maxine Powell of the home, one daughter, Jacqulin Rex, Kansas City, two gandsons, Michael Lynn Rex and wife, Sara, their sons, Benjamin and Jacob of Milan, MO, Leslie Bryan Rex and wife Dixie, their daughter, Megan of Excelsior Springs, MO. He was preceded in death by five brothers and six sisters. Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 8, in the church at the Antique Car Grounds, Lathrop. Visitation 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at Bailey & Cox Family Funeral Service, Lathrop. Burial in Lathrop Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Antique Car Club c/o the funeral home.
