Jeptha Austin Royse

The Howard Courant, October 23, 1941

Jeptha Austin Royse was born March 3, 1858 in Mercer County Missouri, the son of William and Frances Royse and passed away at the home of this step-son and step-daughter-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. Homer Coonrod, north of Howard.  He was 83 years, 7 months and 14 days of age at the time of his passing.

He was united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth Coonrod of Howard in April 1901.  Mrs. Royse preceded him in death.  Two children were born to this union, the oldest of which died in infancy and the other, Opal passed away at about the age of five years.

He is survived by his sister Florence Poole of Howard, and two step-sons, Homer of Howard, KS and Hall of Racine, Wisconsin. He had resided in this community for about 68 years and was a member of the Baptist church.

Funeral services were held at the home of his step-son, Homer Coonrod, Sunday, October 19th, at 2:00 p.m., conducted by Rev. E. H. Milton, pastor of the Howard Baptist Church.  Interment was at the Cresco Cemetery north of Howard.

Mary Elizabeth Royse
The Howard Courant, December 12, 1940

ROYSE--Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Royse passed away at the home of her son four miles north of Howard, December 5, 1940, at the age of 76 years, 1 month, and 6 days.

She was born in Franklin county, Kansas, October 29, 1864.  When yet a girl she united with the Cresco Christian church, but in 1910 became a member of the New Salem Baptist church.  She was active in her church work, and greatly enjoyed these associations, until she became physically unable to participate.

Mrs. Royse is survived by her husband, J. A. Royse and two sons, Homer Conrad of Howard, and Hall Conrad of Racine, Wisconsin.  Also one sister, Mrs. E. A. Preston of Howard, and one grandson, Eugene Conrad of Betrand, Nebraska.

Funeral services were conducted in the Moon Funeral Home, Howard, Sunday, December 8th, at 2:00 p.m.  The Rev. L. V. Osborne, pastor of the Presbyterian church officiating.  Soloist, Darrel Vinette, Accompanied by Miss Helen Thornton.  Interment in the Cresco cemetery.

Mr. William Royse
Mr. William Royse was born February 4,  1837 in the state of Indiana, and departed this life October 15, 1919 at age 82 years, 8 months and 11 days.  He united in marriage with Miss Frances Russell in Mercer County, Missouri, March 15, 1859.  To this union were born the following children:  Jeptha Royse, Mrs. Florence Poole and Mrs. Mary Ealy, all of Howard, Kansas and Mrs. Sarah M. Barnes of Gage, Oklahoma and the following who have preceded their father into the other world, Lottie and Fred E. Royse and Lily DeWitt.   Fred E. Royse having died only a few days before his father.  Mr. Royse has lived in this community for almost forty years and was highly respected by all.  He was also, for all this time, a member of the Christian Cresco Church, and was faithful to the church of his choice.

Funeral services were conducted from his late home Thursday afternoon, October 16, by  Rev. Harry E. Crane,  pastor of the First M. E. Church of Howard, and interment was made in the Cresco Cemetery.

Frances Russell Royse

Frances Russell was born in Franklin County, Indiana, October 27, 1840 and departed this life at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mary Ealley, June 21, 1929, at the age of 88 years, 7 months and 24 days.

At the age of 12 years she moved with her parents to Missouri.  She was united in marriage to William Royse in Musser (Mercer) county, Missouri, March 15, 1859.  To this union were born seven children, of whom three --Lottie and Fred E. Royse and Mrs. Lilly Dewitt--having preceded her in death.  Those who survive are Jeptha Royse, Mrs. Florence Poole and Mrs. Mary Ealley of Howard, Kansas and Mrs. Sarah M. Barnes of Gage, Oklahoma.  The husband and father passed away October 15, 1919.

Mrs. Royse has lived in this community for almost 60 years and was highly respected by all.  She was a member of the Cresco Christian Church all the time she lived in this community, and was faithful to the church of her choice until her death.

Besides the children, she leaves three sisters --Mrs. Anna Schoonover of Vancouver, Washington, Mrs. Katie Thompson of Orchard, Washington, and Lizzie Bennett of Woodland, Washington-- 20 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren and a host of friends to mourn her departure.

Funeral services were conducted at the Christian church by J. F. Buhalts, minister, Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock.  Interment in Cresco cemetery.

John Franklin Poole
John Franklin Poole, son of David and Elizabeth Poole, was born in Dubuque County, Iowa and passed away at his home northwest of Howard on Tuesday, April 13, 1937, at 3 a.m.

He came to Elk county in 1885 and has lived here ever since.  He was married to Florence Royse, February 15, 1888.  He is survived by his wife and five children, Mrs. Rozella Armstrong, Mrs. Alice Morris, and Elbert Poole of Howard, KS, Marion and Arthur Poole of Omaha, Nebraska.  Also eleven grandchildren and three great grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Mattie Akers of Bend, Oregon and a brother Marion Poole of Ashland, Oregon.

He has been a kind father and loving husband and will be sadly missed by this family and many friends.

Funeral services were held at the Moon Funeral Home in Howard on Wednesday, April 14, at 2:30 p.m., conducted by Rev. J. S. Bunch, pastor of the Howard Baptist church.  Burial was in Cresco Cemetery, north of Howard.

Florence Donna Ann Royse Poole

Florence Donna Ann Royse Poole, daughter of William and Frances Royse, was born August 22, 1868, in Marion County, Iowa.  At the age of four, she moved with her family to Elk County, KS.  She passed away Monday, February 2, 1953, at her home in Howard, KS. at the age of 84 years, 5 months, and 24 days.

In 1888 she was united in marriage to John Franklin Poole, who preceded her in death in the year of 1937.  To this union six children were born, three daughters and three sons.

She leaves to mourn her passing one daughter, Alice Morris of Howard, KS and three sons, Marion of Portland, Oregon; Arthur of Omaha, Nebraska; and Elbert of Wichita, KS.  Two daughters preceded her in death, Rozella Armstrong and Maude Poole.  She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends. As a child she joined the Christian Church.  She was a kind and loving wife and mother, and she will be missed by all who know her.

Funeral services were held at the Moon Chapel in Howard at 2:00 p.m., February 4, 1953, conducted by Preston Barrett, minister of the Christian Church.  "Going Down The Valley" and "Beautiful Isle" were sung by Mrs. Wanda Juaire and Mrs. Preston Barrett, with Mrs. Arthur Cummins, accompanist.  Escorts were Frank Simons, Homer Armstrong, Willard Morris, Ralph Armstrong, Chester Morris, and Melvin Friend.  Burial was in Cresco Cemetery.

Maude Poole

POOLE---Near Howard, Elk county, Kansas, Nov. 25, 1900, of diphtheria, Maude, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Poole, aged about 9 years.

Elbert Eugene Poole
Elbert Eugene Poole, youngest son of Frank and Florence Poole, was born February 9, 1905, north of Howard, KS and departed his life January 20, 1965, at his home in Wichita, KS, at the age of 59 years, 11 months and 11 days.

He received his schooling and grew to manhood in Elk County.  Elbert never married, but stayed at home and helped with his folks on the farm.  During the second World War, he worked at Portland, Oregon, then went to Hanford, Washington, where he worked for the Atomic Energy Commission.

He became ill in March of 1964, while working at the Fourth National Bank in Wichita, KS, where he had worked for several years. Elbert was a very quiet and likeable person and always loved his nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by this father, mother, two sisters and one brother.  He leaves to mourn his death one brother, Marion Poole of Portland, Oregon; one sister, Mrs. Alice Poole Mooris of Howard, KS and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 23, at 2:00 p.m., at the Spurrier-Watt chapel, with the Rev. James Lorensen of the Howard Christian church officiating.  The casket bearers were Chester Morris, Lewis Morris, Willard Morris, Ralph Armstrong, Howard Armstrong and Vern Friend.  Music was furnish by Mrs. Barbara Calvert, accompanied by Mrs. Louise Morgan.  Grave side services and burial were in the Cresco Cemetery.

Alfonzo Templeton
PUBLISHED IN THE GREENWOOD COUNTY HISTORY BOOK, page 344
TEMPLETON FAMILY--Alfonzo Templeton was born on January 19, 1948, at Harrisonville, Missouri, and his wife, Fidelia Jane Wolf, was born in Clayton County, Iowa, on December 22, 1852. Alfonzo's ancestors came from Scotland and settled in Wayne County, Kentucky, in the early 1800's.  This family consisted of six sons, who scattered to different parts of the country as the family traveled westward.  The fifth son, William G. D., and his wife, Nancy Glover Templeton, were Alfonzo's parents.  They moved to Harrisonville, Missouri, about 1840 where Alfonzo was born.  Fidelia's parents, Joseph and Lorene Wolf, were born in Virginia and moved to Clayton County, Iowa, where Fidelia was born in 1852.  In 1868 she and her family moved to Harrisonville, Missouri, and on February 7, 1869, she was married to Alfonzo Templeton.  Soon after their marriage they moved with their families to Crawford County, Kansas, near Girard.  Fidelia's parents are buried in a cemetery at Beulah, Kansas.

In 1873 the Templetons all moved to Elk County, Kansas, living northwest of Howard.  In 1890 they moved to Greenwood County to a farm west Severy.  By this time some of the family had died and were buried at Cresco Cemetery on Highway 99 between Severy and Howard.  One young daughter was buried a pasture in Simons Cemetery.  The couple had seven children: Joseph (wife Lydia Fudge), Ollie Ellen (died at age two), George (wife Maud Hill), Nora (husband Joe Roach), Anne (husband Andrew Snyder), Dora (husband Vernon Knapp), and Jessie (husband Roy Wellman).

Mrs. Templeton was a faithful Christian and loving mother.  Mr. Templeton was a staunch Mason and well versed on the Bible.  He enjoyed studying and viewing the stars.  He always carried peppermint candy in his pocket for his children and grandchildren.  They were farmers and worked hard to raise their family.  Mrs. Templeton died on February 10, 1905, and Mr. Templeton died on March 16, 1924.  They are buried in the Cresco Cemetery in Elk County, Kansas.

Fidelia Jane Wolf Templeton
OBITUARY--Severyite, February 16 1905
TEMPLETON--Friday Feb. 10, 1905, at 9:05 p.m., at her home three miles west of Severy, Mrs. A. L. Templeton, aged 52 years, 1 month and 18 days.  Funeral services were held at the house Monday morning, conducted by Rev. Rogers of the Salam Free Baptist church, after which the remains were interred in Cresco Cemetery south of Severy.

Fidelia Jane Wolf was born in Clayton county, Iowa, Dec. 22, 1852.  At the age of sixteen she with her parents moved to Missouri, where she was married to Alfonzo Templeton, Feb. 7, 1869, after which they came to Crawford county, Kansas, from which place they moved to Elk county in 1873.  During her residence in Elk county she was converted to the Christian Faith in 1885.  United in membership with the Christian church at Cresco from which she was promoted to the church Triumphal, Feb. 10, 1905.  In 1890, she with her family came to Greenwood county where she resided until her death.

She was a faithful christian, a devoted wife, a loving mother and a loyal friend and neighbor.  She is survived by husband and six children, who mourn their loss.  During her recent illness she was surrounded by family and friends who administered all that loving hands could offer.

Her children who were present to the end are Joseph Templeton and wife of Curtis, Okla., George Templeton and wife, of Hobart, Okla., Nora and Jessie.  Mrs. Anna Snyder, of Des Moines, Iowa and Mrs. Dora Knapp of Fredonia, Kansas were not present, having returned home a few days prior to her death.

JESSE E. RICHARDSON
OBITUARY -- Howard Current-Citizen
JESSE E. RICHARDSON died Saturday, January 9, 1988 at the Fredonia Regional Hospital.  He was 90 years of age.  Jesse was born on August 30, 1897 at Little Rock, Ark., to Henry and Julia Burgess Richardson.  At the age of two he moved with his family to Elk County, where they farmed in the Cresco Community north of Howard.  He attended rural schools and Sunday School in the Piedmont and Severy area.  Jesse became employed in farm work at the age of 14, and in 1924 began to farm for himself.   On January 23, 1924 he married Edith Mary Oliver at Howard, and they made their home on a farm, three miles southwest of Piedmont for 14 years.  On May 14, 1938, his only child, Beverly Ann, was born at the home of J. C. Oliver in Howard.  She preceded him in death on February 17, 1974.  Jesse and his family farmed in the Howard and Piedmont area throughout his life.  In 1948 he and Edith bought a farm five miles northwest of Howard and remained there, until retiring in 1980.  They have made their home in Howard during the past eight years.

Jesse was the youngest of 16 children and grew to be a well liked, honest man.  He dearly loved his family and was a good friend to his daughter, as well as being a good father.  Raising bees and farming were the things Jesse liked best during his life's work.  He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Howard. Jesse is survived by his wife, Edith of the home, and two grandsons, Mark and Dan Lazarus, both of Texas.  he was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers and sisters, and his daughter, Beverly Ann Lazarus.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 12, 1988 in the Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard, with Rev. Ron Bumstead and Rev. Paul Lynn of the United Methodist Church, officiating.  Mrs. Velette Smith was the organist with the Methodist Men's Double Quartet singing "Just A Closer Walk With Thee" and Lloyd Zimmerman singing "I Know Who Holds Tomorrow".  The casket bearers were David Magers, Wayne Keast, Don Perkins, Bill Perkins, John Cummings and Allen Cummings.  burial was held in Cresco Cemetery, north of Howard.

A memorial has been established with the Howard United Methodist Church.  The funeral arrangements were made with the Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

Edith Mary Richardson

Edith Richardson--HOWARD
Edith Mary Richardson, 95, longtime resident of Howard, died Nov. 22, 2002, at the Howard Twilight Manor. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Zimmerman Funeral Home. The Rev. Julie Shields will officiate. Burial will be in Cresco Cemetery north of Howard.

A memorial has been established with the Howard United Methodist Church. Contributions may be left at the funeral home. Richardson was born Feb. 23, 1907, on a farm north of Howard, to Mary Edith (Miller) and John Charles Oliver. The family moved to Missouri when she was an infant. She began school there before returning to Kansas and attending Cresco, Antioch and Fiat rural schools in the Elk County area.

On Jan. 23, 1924, she married Jesse E. Richardson in Howard. They owned and operated a farm west of Howard for many years.

Her daughter, Beverly Ann (Richardson) Lazarus, died Feb. 17, 1974, and her husband died Jan. 9, 1988. A homemaker, Richardson was active in the Elk County Extension Council and taught classes in canning and preserving food. She served as a 4-H leader and worked many years for the Howard Fair Association. She was a longtime member of the Howard United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her grandsons, Mark Lazarus, Corinth, Texas, and Daniel Lazarus, Grapevine, Texas; and two great-granddaughters.

William Perry Dempsay

OBITUARY---The Howard Courant, April 18, 1940
DEMPSAY---William Perry Dempsay was born near Pearce City, Missouri, February 7, 1873 and at the age of two years moved with his parents to Elk County, Kansas. He passed away at his home April 7, 1940, at the age of sixty-seven years and two months.  He was the eldest son of a family of four children of Arthur and Mary Taylor Dempsay. Both parents are deceased.  Perry, as he was familiarly known, grew to manhood in the Antioch community.

On October 2, 1901, he was united in marriage to Lizzie Baldwin of near Fall River.  To this union were born six children, four of whom died in infancy.  The two remaining children are Mrs. Oleta Richardson of Piedmont and Marion of Rantoul, also Richard, a foster child of the home. Besides his widow, the two children and the foster child, he leaves three grandsons and a granddaughter; two sisters, Myrtle Doggett of Howard, Hattie Doggett of Murdock; one brother, John of Severy, a half brother, Benny Rainey, address unknown; a daughter-in-law; a son-in-law; nieces and nephews.

So passed a faithful loving husband, and kind and indulgent father.  His grandchildren adored him, and in turn he idolized and pampered them.  He was a good citizen, respected and loved by relatives and hosts of friends who will all miss him greatly.

Funeral services were held from the Severy Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. W. C. Hartford, Tuesday afternoon.---Severyite.

C. Caylor, Merle and Fayne of Osawatomie; Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Caylor of Rantoul; Mrs. Delbert Kinsey and Fern and Robert Davis of Elk Falls.
