Logan County Military Letter of Condolence on the Death of Pvt. Roy Beamer
Below is a letter of condolence to Mrs. Blanche Beamer of Oakley, on the death of her husband, Pvt. Roy Beamer, killed in France just before the Armistice was signed.
My dear Mrs. Beamer,
I am taking this privilege of writing you a few lines for I am sure you are anxious to hear something about
Mr. Beamer's death. He was in my platoon and we had become close friends since our first acquaintance at
Camp Funston.
Our Company had moved forward on the night of Oct. 31, preparatory to going "over the top" on the following
morning. We dug small holes to lie in so as to get all protection possible from shell fire. Our barrage
started at 3 o'clock in the morning of Nov. 1st, and the Boche answered back rather weakly but it hit my
platoon very hard. Mr. Beamer was lying in a hole with his Corporal when about 3:30 a.m. a large shell
hit directly in their hole, killing them both instantly.
I know with what great grief you received the sad news and his friends join me in extending our hands in
sympathy to you. He was very true and faithful to his loved ones at home and was eagerly looking forward
to the time when we could all return home. As your mourn his loss as a husband, so we mourn his loss as
a true friend and comrade. If there is any additional information that I can furnish you, I will be very
glad to do so.
Believe me, as ever your friend,
C. L. Clinton, Sgt., Co. E, 353 Inf. AEF
