Death of Dr. J. Evans

A Former Pottstown Physician and Surgeon Passes Away

Dr. John F. Evans, a well-known and eminent physician and surgeon, breathed his last at 6:30 o'clock, this Monday morning, at the residence of his sister, Mrs. Lydia Rinehart, at Steelton, Dauphin, county, PA. He had been afflicted some two years or more with a cancerous affection on the chin, which extended to the throat and adjacent parts, causing him great suffering, and finally terminating his life. He had been very low, barely alive for several days or weeks past, and only kept up by the use of ether and other anodynes and stimulants.

Dr. Evans was born in East Coventry, Chester county and was 67 years of age in May last. He graduated at the Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, in 1845, came to Pottstown and practiced here three or four years. In 1849, in company with Barnet M'Keage, M. H. Jolly, and others from Pottstown, he joined the "forty-niners" who went to California, and remained there two or three years. Returning he located at Wallace, Chester county. During the war he tendered his services to the government and was appointed assistant surgeon of the 175th PA Regiment, and afterwards entered the Surgeon General's Department of Washington. Ten years of the latter part of his life was spent in practice at Downingtown, Chester county, which place he only left and went to Steelton when his ailment compelled him to do so. He was an ornament to the medical profession, a man of fine literary and scientific attainments, and a most useful, popular and genial gentleman. He won and held the esteem of all with whom he was associated in his pathway through life.

The deceased was a brother of Mrs. Charles Moore, of Pottstown; of Mrs. A. M. Stauffer of Madison; of Nathan Evans, of near West Chester, and Mrs. Lydia Rinehart, of Steelton, PA., widow of Daniel Rinehart, formerly of Pughtown, Chester county.
