Montgomery Ledger, September 5, 1876

Thomas Bechtel, almost 12 years of age, son of Mr. T. L. Bechtel, of East Coventry township, Chester county, died on Thursday evening from the effects of tetanus or locked jaws. Several days previous, the lad had been playing with a younger brother, who was carrying a stick in front of him and chasing Thomas around the yard of his father's residence. The elder boy stopped suddenly and the stick which the little boy was carrying, penetrated his leg just above the ankle, inflicting as was supposed, but a slight injury. Little notice was taken of the wound until a day or two after, when the leg commenced to swell considerably and became very much inflamed. Finally tetanus set in, and after terrible suffering death resulted on Thursday evening as before mentioned.
