Weekly Advocate, June 6, 1896

Lewis L. Bechtel died at his home, No. 47 High street, early Sunday morning after a protracted illness, resulting from dropsy and stomach troubles. Deceased was a son of George and Catherine Bechtel, and was born in Buchananville February 17, 1838, being at the time of his death 58 years, 3 months and 13 days. His surviving brother is Augustus L. Bechtel, of Stowe, and his sisters, Mrs. Ephraim Yorgey, Glendale; Mrs. Jacob Miller, Seventh ward. His widow and seven children survive - Mrs. Sallie, wife of Maurice Rutter; Mrs. Clara, wife of John Newhart; Mrs. Lizzie, wife of Dell Peltz; Harry McC. Bechtel, George W. Bechtel, David W. Bechtel and Wright C. Bechtel, all of Pottstown.

Deceased was one of the first regularly-appointed policemen and served as constable for several terms and as constable of the West ward. He was also for many years tax collector. He was an efficient courageous officer, ready at all times to do his duty. He was at one time prominently mentioned as a Democratic candidate for the office of sheriff of this county. Later in life he began hotel keeping, and successfully conducted a hotel at Birdsboro, Trappe, Central, of Pottstown, Limerick Centre and Sou?re, East End, Douglassville, Pleasant View and Commercial, at this place. He was genial in disposition, kind hearted, and was always surrounded by many personal friends.

On Saturday he appeared quite cheerful, and occupied his chair at the front door of his residence, where he viewed Memorial parade.

He retired to bed on Saturday night complaining somewhat fatigued, and early Sunday morning Mrs. Bechtel discovered that he was a corpse. His end was evidently peaceful, having slept from life to death without a struggle.
