Obituary

Pottstown Newspaper, June 8, 1901

Jacob Bechtel, a venerable and much esteemed citizen, died on Thursday forenoon at the home of his son-in-law, Thomas Searles, after a few days' illness. He was 89 years of age on May 4 last, and his death removes the youngest and last of a family of ten children. He was born in West Pottsgrove, near Rattlesnake Hill. When a young man he worked at the Topton iron works and at other iron works in Berks county, but for many years he resided with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Searles. He married Sarah Shunk, who died at Birdsboro in 1854, and ten children were born to them - eight sons and two daughters. A daughter and son died in infancy. Six of the sons served the cause of the Union in the Civil War and only two survived, the other four being killed in battle. Two sons and a daughter survive, viz.: George Bechtel, of Gibraltar; John Bechtel, of Pittsburg, and Anna, wife of Thomas Searles, Pottstown. Announcement of funeral will be made later.
