TRANSLATIONS AND WORD ORIGINS MAILING LISTS



  1. DECIPHER. A mailing list for deciphering handwriting associated with genealogical documents. Any subscriber may post a link to an online image requesting assistance with deciphering the document. This list is also used to post  requests for help in deciphering records for the Kentucky Vital Records project.   2. germantranslation. A mailing list that provides a free translation service for the translation of modern printed/typed documents from German to English and vice versa.   3. HessenGenWeb. A discussion group for anyone with a genealogical interest in the area known as Hessen, Germany, and all its predecessors such as Hessen-Darmstadt, Hessen-Kassel, Hessen-Nassau, Kurhessen, and Rheinhessen. Among other things, the list offers assistance in research from several experts and free language translation. The languages for the list are English and German. Interested individuals should visit the HessenGenWeb Interface for Discussion Group, Chat Room, and Website where you can subscribe to the list.

A mailing list for anyone with a genealogical or historical interest in deciphering and interpreting written documents in Latin from earliest to most recent 20th Century times, and discussing old Latin words, phrases, names, abbreviations and antique jargon.   11. PolishLessons. A mailing list to assist Poland researchers in translating Polish documents and to further their research while visiting/researching in Poland.   12. TRACUCCION. Traduccion means translation in Spanish. This list is for anyone needing help in translating genealogical materials and related documents and requests from Spanish to English and English to Spanish. A mailing list for anyone having trouble transcribing old German documents, parish records, etc. Additional information can be found on the German Historical Research Service website.   15. WORDS. This list provides a light-hearted discussion of English-English and American-English phrases and how they might have originated. These phrases have been passed down to us by our ancestors and have become part of our heritage (e.g., saved by the bell, turn the tables, the whole 9 yards, the upper crust).
