Notes for Richard JEREMIAH

Gwent County Records - Quarter Sessions Records: 20 Aug 1817

Certificate from the Deputy Lieutenants excusing Richard Jeremiah of
Goytrey from service in the militia on payment of 12, having provided
William Edwards to serve in his stead - the said William Edwards having
served one month to the satisfaction of his officers. The Churchwardens
and Overseers of the parish had to find the 12!

1851 Census shows Richard, widower, stone mason, living as a lodger. It
seems likely that he is the "respectable" brother mentioned in the
following deposition:

Gwent Records Office - Quarter Sessions Records: 28 Oct 1829

Examination of Richard Jeremiah now residing in the parish of Trevethin
touching his last place of settlement. "He was born, as he hath been
informed and believes, in the Parish of Goytre - that about 29 years ago
- He hired himself to Mr Hooper at Pantygistre in the parish of Llanvair
Kilgiddin soon after being free to serve until the MayFair following -
that he served that whole period and then went home to his brother and
remained at home 5 or 6 years - that his brother Richard is a settled
inhabitant of Goytre - that about 12 years ago he married his wife Mary
by whom he has 4 children Richard aged 11 years, Maria aged 8 years, who
have gained no settlement in their own right, Thomas aged 2 years and
Sarah aged 7 months."

5 Apr 1835

Quarter Sessions Order requiring maintenance payment from Richard
Jeremiah (2/- a week to the age of 7) in respect of "a female Bastard
child, begotten on the body of Maria Davis, singlewoman".
{NOTE: This could have been either brother Richard, but somehow it seems
likely to be the other one!]
