George was described as an "Ironfounder" and lived at Cwmddu, Swansea.
After his first wife died (25 Dec 1896) he married again (4 Feb 1902), a
spinster some twenty years younger than himself. She too was of
independent means and lived at Myrtle Hill, Loughor. He moved there and
they lived together for some nine years until he died. In the family it
is she (Mary Althea) who is remembered as the mater familias, not the
true mother (Rachel).
In the 1861 Census [RG9 4100 Sch 78 Carmarthen Road] George Jeremiah aged
26, Iron Founder, is shown living with his wife Rachel, aged 30, and
their son Thomas, "Infant". (This Thomas subsequently died, aged 4)
In the 1871 Census [RG10 5449 Folio 2 Cwmdu Sch 24] George is shown aged
35, Iron Founder, living with his wife Rachel aged 40 and children
Elizabeth, aged 8, Hannah, aged 7, David, aged 6, Thomas, aged 5, Ann,
aged 4, and Mary Jane, aged 1.
