1881 Census [RG11 5353 folio 103 p68] shows him aged 17 living with his
mother and stepfather (Rees Bassett) and brother David at Graig, Clase.
Naturalised US citizen 1897.
US family tradition has it that he arrived on the US West Coast as a
ship's organist and jumped ship in Los Angeles. He must have sent for his
wife to join him, and it appears he persuaded his mother (once widowed
from BASSETT) and his sister Hannah (married name thought to be SCULL -
more likely to have been SCULLY, a family in the Llangyfelach area at the
time) to join him too.
It is reported that he always asserted his initials stood for Truth,
Honesty and Justice!
