David Cwmdu. (to distinguish him from all the other Davids in the family
- Cwmdu was the name of the house he lived in for the later part of his
life) first comes to attention in the Llangyfelach Parish Register as
being christened in May 1802. In his marriage certificate in 1829 he is
described as "Ironfounder". In the 1841 Census he appears as living in
Morriston, age 34, Moulder, with his wife Alice age 32 and children
Jeremiah age 10, George age 7, Ann age 4 and Thomas age 1. In the 1851
Census he is shown as living in Graig Trewyddfa, age 42, Moulder. The
family has increased with the addition of Alice age 7, Hannah age 4 and
Margaret age 1. Jeremiah (now age 19) and George (now age 16) are both
shown as Moulders.
Subsequently Hannah (26 mar 1854), Jeremiah (21 ago 1864), and Thomas (16
sep 1865) all died early.
By the time he made his Will in 1880 David Cwmdu had become a wealthy
man. The Will is quite lengthy and complex, and appears to indicate that
his surviving children at that time were George, Ann (married to Elias
Davies), Alice (married to George Clarke) Margaret (married to William
Williams, Tinplate manufacturer - DP's partner), and Mary Jane (married
to Joseph Davies, Grocer). There is a clear implication that Ann was out
of favour. Jeremiah is described in the Will as "deceased" and as having
had two sons, David and Thomas, who survived and are beneficiaries.
