He was illegitimate; his mother is unknown and there is some uncertainty
about his father. His marriage certificate gives the father as James
Rogers, Farmer, Questmoor, Eardisley, Herefordshire. He would have been
73 at the date of John's birth, and his Will of 9 Oct 1843 does not
mention John. Family tradition is that the real father was Henry Rogers,
James'son. He would have been 22 at the time of John's birth.
John's marriage certificate gives his residence as Pembridge,
Herefordshire, and he signed it with his mark. After marriage he must
have moved to Bryndredneg, Nantmel (OS 066651) where he lived until his
death in 1898. Buried in St Cynllo's churchyard, Nantmel.
