Her date of birth is calculated from her entry in the 1871 Census, and
cannot be relied upon.The 1861 Census shows Rachel as a widow aged 55
living with her two children at Cwmffrwdoer Farm, describing her as a
farmer of 20 acres. Also shown as part of the household are a niece
Margaret aged 10 and a nephew John aged 7, both surnamed Lewis and both
born in Bedwellty. It is therefore possible that Rachel's maiden name was
Lewis.
