BLOODY AFFAIR IN CALDWELL - One of the most melancholy occurrences we
have had to chronicle for some time, took place on the 6th inst. near
Bunker Hill landing in Caldwell parish. The parties engaged in the sad
affair were Capt. James and W. J. Duke with a younger brother on the one
side and ARCHIBALD CAIN, with his son WILLIAM, a man some forty years old
on the other. Mr L. Noble, a relative of the Dukes who witnessed the
affair, states that the Dukes went to old Mr Cain's to have a better
understanding as to certain scandalous rumors said to have been
circulated against their sister by the younger CAIN. A very bitter
controversy ensued between the parties when finally the elder CAIN went
to his house near by and procuring his double barreled shot gun,
returned. One of the two Dukes, two of which were armed, said tauntingly
to CAIN, "Now shoot, if you want to," or words to that effect. Instantly
the old man fired one barrel of his gun, one of the Dukes falling. The
other barrel was immediately discharged at another of the Dukes, and he
also fell. The younger Duke was then assailed by the younger CAIN, with
a maul and very badly beaten.  Both of the Dukes were killed on the spot;
the younger one, though badly beaten, is only disabled. The CAINS fled
the scene of bloodshed on Wednesday. Mr Noble and son have offered a
reward of $250 each for their arrest and safe confinement. The
unfortunate victims of this bloody recontre are said to have been good
and respectable citizens. Capt. Duke was a member of Col. Morrisons's
31st La. regiment, and was a leading citizen of Caldwell. The violent
death of the two, at the hands of their neighbors, has caused a deep
feeling in the parish. Possibly the CAINS had provocations of which we
have not heard. The father is a man of some 65 years of age, and ought
not in reason to have committed an act so rash and atrocious as the
murder of the Dukes is representated to have been.

BURNING OF THE JAIL AT COLUMBIA ---- We learn that on Saturday night the
27th last, the jail of Columbia was set on fire and burned to the ground.
The only prisoner confined therein was A. CAIN who was accused of killing
the brothers Duke about two months ago. CAIN was in the cage and was
burned to death. It is generally supposed that the jail was set on fire
for this purpose. This act is as much deplored by the good citizens of
Caldwell, but goes to show the spirit of lawlessness which prevail in
many of our parishes - (Monroe Intelligencer).
