This C-47 with serial number 52547 was one of five aircraft modified to the VC117B standard and delivered to the Air Corps in July 1945. It is believed to have been General Hoyt Vandenberg's personal aircraft.
These guys are standing in front of a B-17 that was painted silver. In the picture, Bob Admire is the man kneeling on the far left. Recognize anyone else? It is believed that this aircraft was used for photo recon after the war. Although it didn't come out in this scan, the plane's serial number is 3-38792. She was delivered to the Air Corps in October, 1944 and scrapped in January, 1946. On December 28, 1945, this aircraft was involved in some sort of accident at Tulln AAF Station, Austria.
The following are the crew members during that flight:
Bob Admire is on the left. "Smitty" is on the right. "Smitty" appears in several photos taken at Templehof. Does anyone know his real name? The photo was taken December 29, 1945.
Bob Admire is on the left. Who are the other two guys? Was the photographer a novice or did he intend to center on the rubble?
This picture of Templehof was taken from the air by an unknown Air Force photographer. If you look closely at the C-47 in the lower right of the photo, you'll see the squadron code "Z4" painted on the side just above the engine. In the original photo, the logo is visible on most all of the planes. Photo courtesy of Walter Lutzweit.
Taken inside one of the hangars at Templehof. If you look closely at the wall in the background to the right of K-K-Katy's nose, you can see "Rauchen Verbotten" (No smoking) written on it. Photo courtesy of Walter Lutzweit.
Taken at the Tullin Air Base in Vienna, Austria. This gentleman has been identified as "Sgt. Drawdy". I don't know anything about him, but have several pictures of him and believe he must have known my father. Any info on him would be greatly appreciated. Photo courtesy of Walter Lutzweit.
