SICILIAN PLAYERS PLEASE
Double Bill at the Braodway Theatre Stirs Audience to Enthusiasm
The double bill of "Cavalleria Rusticana" and "I Carbunara" was given last night at the Broadway Theatre by Mimi Aguglia and her company of Sicilian players. The audience comfortably filled the large house, and the players were even more enthusiastically received than last week when they opened their New York engagement. The story of "Cavalleria Rusticana" as played last night follows closely that of the opera, and the characters of Turridu, his mother, Lola, Santuzza, and Alfio were played in the naturalistic manner for which Mimi Aguglia and her company are noted.
"I Carbunara" ("The Coal Dealer") is a tragedy in two acts by Alfredo Orlani, and is not so well known. As in "Cavalleria Rusticana" there is a duel, but the combatants fight with axes. It is a turbulent story of Italian love and hate, and in the tragic scenes the audience was wrought up to a high tension.
