A chart for figuring cousin relationships
(Based on the system used by courts and most genealogical societies.)

For a true "relationship" to exist, there must be an ancestor who is common to both individuals. If you examine the chart below the "Common Ancestor" is Box 1 on the horizontal scale (HS) as well as Box 1 on the Vertical Scale (VS). On the top row, find the relationship of one person to the common ancestor and follow the column straight down. Find the other person's relationship to the common ancestor on the left hand column and follow that row straight across. The relationship is where the projected row and column meet.
