Irish Families Identified in the 1880 US Census Who were Living in the City of South Bend, St Joseph County, Indiana Ennumeration District 162, with Surnames S-T
A large concentration of Irish immigrants were living in the City of South Bend's District 162 around 1880. Many of the Irish in this area were employed by either the University of Notre Dame and the Singer Manufacturing Company. They lived on a cluster of streets in and around Notre Dame Avenue. District 162 appears to cover wards 2 and 4. There appears to have been a change in boundaries as many were in district 161 in the 1870 Census.
I plan to include Irish Descendents who were born in the U.S. but have at least one parent from Ireland, in this compilation. Many of the Irish in the City of South Bend had been here since the 1850's and by the 1880's their children who were born here could be having children.
I am in the process of tracing all of these South Bend Irish Families and have created pages on over 40 of them so far. I would love to hear from any descendents of these families so that we can share information and see how all of our ancestor's migration trails might have crossed. By working together, I think we will all have a much greater likelihood of finding our true origins in Ireland.
They will be presented alphabetically by the father's or the head of the family's surname.
Special Note: Thomas Stoney, father in law of Mathew Williams (father of Ann Williams) is living with them in this census and is listed under the u_z section. There is also a James Thomlinson, father in law who is living with the John and Maggie Murphy family on Notre Dame Avenue (he is listed in the m_n section).
Regarding Surname Talbot: On page 40 of ancestry.com compilation of district 162 there is a crossed out entry for a peter Talbot 39 Head, Tailor who was born in New York, his parents born in Ireland. He is listed as being dead and the house number of visitation is # 8 (this corresponds with widow Hannah Talbot in District 161 not 162 of this compilation).
